Ursula von der Leyen to Visit Ukraine

According to Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksii Honcharenko, von der Leyen will visit Ukraine on November 4…reports Asian Lite News

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen will visit Ukraine this month, a media report has said, citing Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanishina.

During her visit, von der Leyen will hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ahead of the European Union (EU) announcement of its decision regarding the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the bloc, Stefanishina said.

The parties will discuss Ukraine’s progress toward EU membership, which will be presented by the European Commission in the final report on November 8, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the TSN.ua media outlet.

Ukraine expects a positive decision regarding the launch of the accession talks with the EU, Stefanishina said.

According to Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksii Honcharenko, von der Leyen will visit Ukraine on November 4.

In June 2022, EU leaders accepted Ukraine as a candidate for membership in the bloc.

Last month, Zelensky said the launch of talks on accession to the EU this year is a top priority for Ukraine.

Ukraine and Turkey Hold Talks on Black Sea Security

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan have discussed the security situation in the Black Sea region during a meeting in Berlin.

Another focus of the talks was Ukraine’s grain exports to global markets, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

Kuleba and Fidan also exchanged their views on the developments in the Middle East.

Kuleba arrived in the German capital earlier in the day to participate in the conference of foreign ministers of the European Union member states and candidate countries.

Zelensky Confirms Ukraine’s Maiden Use of US ATACMS Missiles

As the world’s attention shifted to Israel, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had recently asked Western countries to continue their aid to Ukraine….reports Asian Lite News

Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, announced on Tuesday that the country’s armed forces had successfully used US-supplied ATACMS long-range missiles, highlighting their precise performance.

However, specific information about when and where these missiles were used was not disclosed in his evening social media address.

As the world’s attention shifted to Israel, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had recently asked Western countries to continue their aid to Ukraine.

“We spoke about priorities for Ukraine, for defending how to survive during this next winter,” Zelensky told reporters on Wednesday before attending a meeting with NATO defence ministers.

“We need some support from the leaders. That is why I am here today,” he said, with the presence of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Zelensky named air defence systems as one of his priorities. “It is not just basic words. We need concrete things and we need them in very concrete geographic points on our land,” he added.

The NATO-Ukraine meeting secured more support for the country to face the winter conflicts. Stoltenberg said the alliance would provide more cold weather clothing, demining capabilities, fuel, and medical equipment “to help Ukraine weather another difficult winter”.

The new pledge was made when the clashes between Israel and Hamas were drawing the world’s attention.

Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that Russia could return to nuclear weapons testing and might withdraw from the nuclear test ban treaty, reported Al Jazeera.

Putin said that it was “theoretically” possible for Russia to withdraw from the nuclear test ban treaty, pointing out that it generally prohibits the testing of nuclear weapons, but that no decision has been made yet.

He further highlighted that Russia has tested a new nuclear-powered missile delivery system but had not decided whether to resume explosives testing, Al Jazeera reported.

“I think no person of sound mind and clear memory would think of using nuclear weapons against Russia,” Putin said in his speech at a foreign policy forum experts in Sochi.

“I hear calls to start testing nuclear weapons, to return to testing,” he added. “I am not ready to say whether we really need to conduct tests or not.”

He later announced that Russia has effectively completed the development of the Burevestnik cruise missile and the Sarmat heavy intercontinental ballistic missile. Moreover, he said that he would work on putting them into production.

“We conducted the last successful test of the Burevestnik nuclear-powered global-range cruise missile,” he said. It was the first announcement of a successful test of the Burevestnik and is translated as “Storm Petrel.

Zelensky Seeks Western Support During Brussels Visit

As the world’s attention shifted to Israel, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Brussels to ask Western countries to continue their aid to Ukraine.

“We spoke about priorities for Ukraine, for defending how to survive during this next winter,” Zelensky told reporters on Wednesday before attending a meeting with NATO defence ministers, Xinhua news agency reported.

“We need some support from the leaders. That is why I am here today,” he said, with the presence of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

The new pledge was made when the clashes between Israel and Hamas were drawing the world’s attention. As of Wednesday, more than 2,000 people have been killed and thousands of others injured on both sides.

On Thursday, NATO defence ministers will discuss the situation in the Middle East, with Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant set to join via videoconference.

‘Global South no longer willing to be lectured’

The Russian Foreign Minister added that the Global South is “not willing” to enforce Russia to comply with the “Zelenskyy formula” to end the conflict…reports Asian Lite News

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the New Delhi Declaration at the G20 Summit is about the awakening of the Global South which is “no longer willing” to be lectured about Russia complying with “Zelenskyy formula”.

Addressing a press conference after the conclusion of the G20 Summit here, Lavrov said that the declaration is about the consolidation of the Global South that is willing to work to achieve its goals.

“When they agreed to that, perhaps it was the voice of their conscience. Speaking frankly, we didn’t expect that. We were 100 per cent ready to defend our honest wording of the text, and it was truly honest and fair, he said.

He further said that the main content of the declaration is all about the awakening of the Global South and one should not isolate the paragraph on Russia-Ukraine war.

“Let me underline that we cannot isolate that paragraph (on Ukraine and Russia) from the rest of the work on the declaration. The main content of the declaration this year is all about the awakening of the Global South and the consolidation of the Global South that is truly willing for the G20 to work for its main goals,” Lavrov said.

The Russian Foreign Minister added that the Global South is “not willing” to enforce Russia to comply with the “Zelenskyy formula” to end the conflict.

“The Global South is no longer willing to be lectured. They don’t want to hear anything about Russia enforcing Russia to comply with the Zelenskyy formula. I don’t want to talk about it, this formula is unrealistic. This approach is simple, it is disrespectful for the developing nations…sane people cannot say such things. I think this is nothing but a new expression of neo-colonialism,” he further added.

Russian Foreign Minister described the New Delhi G20 Summit as “a milestone” and said the active role of the Indian presidency “has genuinely consolidated” the G20 countries from the Global South for the first time in history.

“It is a long way to go but this Summit has been a milestone… I would also like to mention the active role of the Indian presidency that has genuinely consolidated the G20 countries from the Global South for the first time in history. Our BRICS partners – Brazil, India, China, South Africa have been particularly active and thanks to these consolidated positions taken by the Global South countries to uphold and protect their legitimate interests,” he said.

“I think that a healthy solution has been found in the declaration regarding the need to strive for a clear and equitable balance of interest. It is one of the decent purposes and we are already on track. In our turn, we will continue strengthening these positive trends including during Brazil’s presidency next year and in 2025 during South Africa’s presidency,” he added.

Lavrov also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposal to hold a virtual G20 session in November towards the end of India’s G20 presidency to review the proposals made at the New Delhi Summit.

Modi earlier in the day announced the conclusion of the G20 Summit and proposed to hold a virtual G20 session in November to review the suggestions and proposals made at the premier forum for international economic cooperation. (ANI)

Zelensky, Kishida Talk Security

He invited Japan to participate in the next round of consultations on Ukraine’s Peace Formula at the level of national security advisors and in the Global Peace Summit…reports Asian Lite News

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has discussed security guarantees for his country during phone talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the president’s press service said.

Zelensky on Tuesday praised the joint declaration on security guarantees for Ukraine adopted by the Group of Seven (G7), urging Japan to conclude bilateral agreements under the document, Xinhua news agency reported.

“We are ready to start this negotiation process with Japan as soon as possible,” Zelensky stressed.

He invited Japan to participate in the next round of consultations on Ukraine’s Peace Formula at the level of national security advisors and in the Global Peace Summit.

During the conversation, the parties also discussed the prospects for the extension of the Black Sea “grain corridor” for exporting foodstuffs from Ukraine by creating alternative routes.

Another topic of the talks was the preparation for the Ukraine Recovery Conference scheduled to take place in Japan early next year.

Zelensky admits counteroffensive progress slower than expected

The President went on to say that the “counteroffensive is when the army is attacking and not when it is retreating”…reports Asian Lite News

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged that his country’s counteroffensive against Russia is “happening probably slower” than some had hoped.

Zelensky’s remarks featured in a video released by his office on Tuesday which he made during a meeting with Latin American media outlets over the weekend, CNN reported.

“But all of this is secondary. In some places, there are mines, in some places there are technical difficulties, in some places we have been waiting for long. Or there are other complications. We can be discussing it for a long time,” Zelensky said.

“The direction of the counteroffensive, what’s wrong with it, what we have enough of, what we lack.”

The President went on to say that the “counteroffensive is when the army is attacking and not when it is retreating”.

“And this is an important and positive moment. And it is Ukraine that has the initiative. It is very difficult to be fighting for such a long time which is obvious. All this is very difficult when you lack this or that equipment. I know it is difficult for us but I definitely know it is more difficult for the Russians,” CNN quoted Zelensky as saying in the video.

“While there is fatigue in the eyes of Ukrainians, there is fear in Russians’ eyes,” the President added.

The primary challenge for Ukrainian forces is the continued difficulty of breaking through Russia’s multi-layered defensive lines in the eastern and southern parts of the country, which are marked by tens of thousands of mines and vast networks of trenches, reports CNN.

Ukrainian forces have incurred staggering losses there, leading Ukrainian commanders to hold back some units to regroup and reduce casualties.

What is Zelensky’s peace formula?

The first stage includes meetings between Ukrainian authorities and ambassadors accredited to Ukraine…reports Asian Lite News

The Ukrainian President’s office has unveiled a three-step strategy to implement Ukraine’s Peace Formula.

The first stage includes meetings between Ukrainian authorities and ambassadors accredited to Ukraine, aimed at discussing the Peace Formula in detail, Andriy Yermak, head of the president’s office, said on Wednesday in a Telegram post.

At the second stage, Kiev will hold talks with foreign national security advisers and political advisers to find mechanisms for the implementation of the peace plan, Yermak added.

According to Yermak, a global summit with the participation of world leaders to implement measures aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine would become the final stage of the peace strategy, Xinhua news agency reported.

The first international meeting to discuss Ukraine’s Peace Formula was held in Denmark in June, and the next meeting will be held in Saudi Arabia, Yermak said.

National security advisers and political advisers from countries in the West, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America will take part in the meeting, he noted.

According to Igor Zhovkva, the deputy head of the Ukrainian President’s office, representatives of more than 30 countries will participate in the meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on August 5-6.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky put forward a 10-point formula designed to achieve peace in Ukraine in November 2022.

Zelensky SOS to Sunak over Odesa

In the latest wave of attacks on Odesa, several other historic buildings have also been destroyed…reports Asian Lite News

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday said that he held a phone conversation with the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on defending Odesa following the daily attempts by Russia to destroy Odesa’s historic centre.

Zelenskyy took to his official Twitter account and said, “Had a phone call with Prime Minister of the United Kingdom @RishiSunak. Spoke about Russia’s daily attempts to destroy Odesa’s historic centre and port infrastructure. We must defend Odesa.”

Yesterday, the Russian missile strikes that killed at least one and injured many, destroyed a famous Orthodox cathedral in the southern Ukrainian port city of Odesa, reported CNN on Monday.

The largest church structure in Odesa is the Transfiguration Cathedral. It was consecrated in 1809 and later demolished in 1936 during the Soviet era. However, when Ukraine became an independent nation, the structure underwent a reconstruction.

In the latest wave of attacks on Odesa, several other historic buildings have also been destroyed.

Zelenskyy further discussed the need to strengthen its defense cooperation and the urgent need to continue the Black Sea Grain Initiative.

“Ukraine urgently needs to strengthen its air defense to protect its historical heritage and continue the Black Sea Grain Initiative. We discussed our further defense cooperation, the course of Ukrainian offensive operations. I outlined the current defense needs of Ukraine,” Zelenskyy tweeted.

The agreement that had permitted Ukraine to export grain from its Black Sea ports a year ago, despite the war, to help alleviate a global food crisis, was terminated last week by Moscow, which claimed that the requirements for the extension had been disregarded.

Zelenskyy further said in his tweet, “Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and I noted the adoption by the G7 of the Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine at the NATO Summit in Vilnius and the subsequent accession of other countries to it. We also coordinated future steps to fill it with concrete security guarantees on a bilateral basis.”

During a telephonic conversation with NATO Secretary General Jen Stoltenberg on July 22, Zelenskyy discussed the implementation of the agreements reached during the Vilnius summit and further actions regarding the integration of Ukraine into NATO.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba condemned the intention of certain countries to continue blocking Ukraine’s grain exports to the European Union (EU).

“It is unacceptable. The demand by some countries to extend the EU restriction after September 15 also goes against their own interests,” Kuleba was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.

Ukraine works closely with partners and neighbours to resolve the issue, the minister added. In May, the European Commission imposed a ban on grain exports from Ukraine to five European countries.

According to media reports, last week, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania voiced their intent to extend the ban, which expires on September 15, to protect the interests of their farmers.

Russian drones destroy grain warehouses

Russian drones reportedly have attacked Ukraine’s Danube ports of Reni and Izmail, destroying grain warehouses and other facilities.

The attacks, using Iranian-supplied drones, follow Russia’s withdrawal this month from the Black Sea deal that allowed Ukraine to export its grain and threats by both Moscow and Kiev to target civilian carriers visiting ports, The Guardian reported.

“Russia hit another Ukrainian grain storage overnight. It tries to extract concessions by holding 400 million people hostage. I urge all nations, particularly those in Africa and Asia who are most affected by rising food prices, to mount a united global response to food terrorism,” Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, wrote on Twitter on Monday, without identifying the location of the target.

“Warehouses where grain crops were stored were destroyed, tanks for storing other types of cargo were damaged. There was a fire in one of the production premises, which was promptly extinguished,” local police were quoted as saying by the news outlet.

The facilities are just across the river from Nato-member Romania.

Officials say more than 60,000 tonnes of grain have been destroyed in the past week, the BBC reported.

Odesa head Oleh Kiper, whose region also covers the Danube ports of Reni and Izmail, said in his Telegram channel that Russia had attacked the infrastructure there for four hours with Iranian-made drones.

He said a grain hangar and tanks for storage were destroyed. Other local officials say three warehouses were bombed.

Three drones out of about 15 involved in the attack were destroyed by air defences, Kiper added.

Zelensky sacks Ukrainian envoy to UK

Prystaiko was interviewed about the exchange the following day, where he was asked whether there was a “hint of sarcasm” in Zelenskyy’s response to Wallace…reports Asian Lite News

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy fired his ambassador to the United Kingdom Vadym Prystaiko on Friday, days after criticism of his remarks regarding comments by UK Defence Secretary, CNN reported.

A statement published Friday on the Ukrainian presidency’s website confirmed Prystaiko’s dismissal, however, did not provide a reason.

Notably, Prystaiko had criticized Zelenskyy over his reaction to recent remarks by British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, who had suggested Ukraine had not expressed sufficient “gratitude” for Western financial support.

Prystaiko said Zelensky’s response to Wallace amounted to “unhealthy sarcasm”, CNN reported.

The tension began at a NATO summit in Lithuania earlier this month when Wallace said that “whether we like it or not, people want to see gratitude for the West’s military contributions to Ukraine’s war effort”. “I said to the Ukrainians last June when I drove 11 hours to be given a list – I’m not Amazon,” CNN quoted Wallace as saying.

When asked about those remarks by a reporter at the NATO summit, Zelenskyy was ‘nonplussed’. “I just don’t know what he means. How else should we thank him? Well, let him write to me and tell me how I need to thank people so that we can be fully grateful. We can also wake up in the morning and thank the minister personally,” CNN quoted Zelenskyy as saying.

Prystaiko was interviewed about the exchange the following day, where he was asked whether there was a “hint of sarcasm” in Zelenskyy’s response to Wallace. Responding to this, Prystaiko conceded there was “a little bit of sarcasm,” and went on to say: “I don’t believe this sarcasm is healthy.”

“We don’t have to show the Russians that we have something between us. They have to know that we are working together. If anything happens, Ben can call me and tell me everything he wants,” CNN quoted Prystaiko as saying.

Biden to meet Zelensky during NATO Summit

The main focus of the two-day Summit is Ukraine’s membership which Zelensky has been pushing for months amid the ongoing war….reports Asian Lite News

US and Ukrainian Presidents Joe Biden and Volodymyr Zelensky will meet during the two-day NATO Summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, where Kiev’s membership to the military alliance will be one of the main topics of discussion.

An informed source said the two leaders will meet on the second day of the Summit on Wednesday, reports CNN.

The main focus of the two-day Summit is Ukraine’s membership which Zelensky has been pushing for months amid the ongoing war.

But all NATO members agree that Ukraine cannot join the bloc during the war amid fears this would lead to a direct conflict with a nuclear-armed Russia, the BBC reported.

Zelensky has admitted that he does not expect a membership until after the war, but he wants the Summit to give a “clear signal” on Ukraine’s bid.

In a CNN interview on Sunday night, President Biden said that Ukraine was not yet ready for a NATO membership, adding that Russia needs to first end its ongoing invasion of Kiev, only then can the military alliance consider adding the war-torn nation to its ranks.

He said that although talks of granting Kiev a NATO membership was “premature”, the US and its allies in the military alliance will continue to provideZelensky and his forces the security and weaponry they need to try to end the war with Russia.

“I don’t think there is unanimity in NATO about whether or not to bring Ukraine into the NATO family now, at this moment, in the middle of a war,” Biden said.

“For example, if you did that, then, you know — and I mean what I say — we’re determined to commit every inch of territory that is NATO territory. It’s a commitment that we’ve all made no matter what. If the war is going on, then we’re all in war. We’re at war with Russia, if that were the case.”

The President said that he has spoken to Zelensky at length about the issue, saying that he has told his Ukrainian counterpart that the US would keep providing security and weaponry for Ukraine like it does for Israel while the process plays out.

The Summit will also be attended by the leaders of Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and the European Union.
