COP26: Last Hope To Save Planet?

Around the world storms, floods and wildfires are intensifying. Air pollution affects the health of tens of millions of people and unpredictable weather causes untold damage to homes and livelihoods too…reports VISHAL GULATI

The coming two weeks at Glasgow are pivotal for world leaders and are hard at work on climate priorities — to keep global heating to 1.5 degrees Celsius, as required by the 2015 Paris Agreement and is the ‘real science’.

The scary facts about the climate change is that it could drive 100 million more people into poverty by 2030 and air pollution kills seven million people every year.

This July has earned the distinction as the world’s hottest month ever recorded as per the new data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Ahead of about 120 world leaders from US President Joe Biden to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are converge on Glasgow from Monday for COP26 — the 2021 edition of the UN Annual Climate Change Conference with the UK presidency’s key objective as keeping the goal of limiting temperature increase to 1.5C within reach, COP26 President Alok Sharma tweeted: “Witnessing the utter devastation caused by climate change has been a hugely humbling experience call on world leaders to act. Paris promised, Glasgow must deliver.”

Many believe the Glasgow summit that Britain is hosting is to be the world’s best last chance to get runaway climate change under control.

“Without decisive action, we are gambling away our last chance to — literally — turn the tide,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said ahead of the summit.

Why COP26 is important?

As per the Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015, all countries agreed to step up efforts to try and limit global warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial temperatures, and boost climate action financing.

During the climate negotiations, which missed 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, among other issues, delegates from 196 countries and the EU will be aiming to finalise the ‘Paris Rulebook’, or the rules needed to implement the Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Under the Paris Agreement, countries committed to bring forward national plans setting out how more they would reduce their emissions — known as Nationally Determined Contributions, or NDCs.

This time they will need to agree on common timeframes for the frequency of revision and monitoring of their climate commitments.

Some nations have already set goals to reach net zero emissions and others need to dramatically raise their ambition.

“At COP26, we will work with partners to take forward action on protecting and restoring forests and critical ecosystems, and we will champion the transition towards sustainable, resilient and nature positive agriculture,” said Sharma in a forward that sets out the exciting series of events that will be taking place.

“COP26 needs to be decisive. Whether future generations look back at this time with admiration or despair, depends entirely on our ability to seize this moment. Let’s seize it together,” he said.

Around the world storms, floods and wildfires are intensifying. Air pollution affects the health of tens of millions of people and unpredictable weather causes untold damage to homes and livelihoods too.

But while the impacts of climate change are devastating, advances in tackling it are leading to cleaner air, creating good jobs, restoring nature and at the same time unleashing economic growth.

In the run up to COP26, the Aldersgate Group and leaders from business, academia, and civil society urged world governments to respond to the challenges set by the UK Presidency and seize the opportunity the talks present to deliver a clear pathway towards keeping average temperature increases to within 1.5C.

They emphasised the significant economic opportunity presented by the transition to net zero emissions, called on all major emitters to increase their emission reduction pledges (NDCs) in line with the 1.5C target and called for progress on meeting climate finance pledges to developing countries, phasing out coal, progressing rules for international carbon trading and mobilising international finance towards low-carbon infrastructure.

The IPCC’s recent Sixth Assessment Report delivered a clear message to policymakers, declaring a code red for humanity and stressing the need for immediate action to address the climate crisis.

Despite promising commitments have been made by a growing number of economies like the US, Japan, the European Union, and the UK ahead of the talks, the latest UNEP Emissions Gap Report finds new and updated NDCs only take 7.5 per cent off predicted 2030 emissions, while 55 per cent is needed to meet the 1.5-degree Paris goal.

The report finds that net-zero pledges could make a big difference. If fully implemented, these pledges could bring the predicted global temperature rise to 2.2 degrees, providing hope that further action could still head off the most-catastrophic impacts of climate change.

However, net-zero pledges are still vague, incomplete in many cases, and inconsistent with most 2030 NDCs.

The clock is ticking loudly and clear — the last chance of limiting global warming to 1.5C as Paris promised six years ago and Glasgow, surrounded by the Clyde river and parks, must deliver with a net-zero emissions economy no later than 2050.

US, EU agree to deal on dispute over tariffs

The EU was set to increase tariffs on December 1 to 50 per cent on various US products, including Harley-Davidson motorcycles and bourbon from Kentucky…reports Asian Lite News.

The US has reached a deal with the European Union (EU) to resolve a three-year dispute over tariffs on steel and aluminium imported from the bloc, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said on Sunday.

“We’ve reached an agreement with the EU which maintains the 232 tariffs but allows limited volumes of EU steel and aluminium to enter the US tariff-free,” Raimondo told reporters here.

“This agreement is significant in that it will reduce costs for American manufacturers and consumers,” Raimondo said, adding the cost of steel for manufacturers in the US downstream industries has more than tripled in the past year.

In return, the EU will drop their retaliatory tariffs on American goods, according to Raimondo.

The EU was set to increase tariffs on December 1 to 50 per cent on various US products, including Harley-Davidson motorcycles and bourbon from Kentucky.

“I don’t think we can underestimate how crippling a 50 per cent tariff is. A business can’t survive with a 50 per cent tariff,” Raimondo said.

“We have also agreed to suspend the WTO disputes against each other related to the 232 actions,” US Trade Representative Katherine Tai told reporters.

U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai (Wikipedia)

Meanwhile, “the US and the EU have agreed to negotiate the first-ever carbon-based arrangement on steel and aluminium trade, and create greater incentives for reducing carbon intensity across modes of production of steel and aluminium produced by American and European companies”, Tai said.

Myron Brilliant, the Chamber of Commerce’s Executive Vice President, said that the deal offers some relief for American manufacturers suffering from soaring steel prices and shortages, “but further action is needed”.

“Section 232 tariffs and quotas remain in place on imports from many other countries,” Brilliant said.

Citing national security concerns, the administration of former President Donald Trump unilaterally imposed a 25 per cent tariff on steel imports and 10 per cent tariff on aluminium imports in 2018, under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, drawing strong opposition domestically and abroad.

Failing to reach a deal with the Trump administration, the EU took the case to the WTO and imposed retaliatory tariffs on a range of American products.

Back to silver sparkle

In the era of sustainable fashion, silver is affordable, durable yet so chic…writes N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe

Jewellery brings a sparkle to a woman’s eye being an emotion, heritage, a status symbol. It defines the personality of the person wearing it.

When it comes to modern-day minimalism, you can’t go wrong with classic silver. Right from the start, silver has always been the go-to choice for day dressing. Classic, elegant and timeless, it holds strong to its position even in the Gen-Z era, be it in the form of safety pin styled earrings or viper chains.

In recent times where it is more about comfort and personal style, it also has taken a very personalised tone. The intricate, delicate piece defines the sheer elegance and professionalism of the person wearing it, someone confident who knows her game.

In the era of sustainable fashion, silver is affordable, durable yet so chic

Sakshi Agarwal, White Haathi said, “After embracing 80s fashion the first time around, I wasn’t prepared for quite how quickly the trend for hoop earrings would re-establish itself. In the past year, I’ve seen spectacular high jewellery interpretations, front-back hoops, double hoops, oversized hoops and everything in between, a sure sign that what began as a trend is now much more established.

“There is something reassuringly cool about hoops and that is why they have entered the realm of modern classics. Among that oft-cited but actually quite an elusive group of jewels that transitions effortlessly from day to night, hoop earrings are most definitely here to stay”, added Sakshi.

Moon tells Biden about his offer of papal visit to N.Korea

Pope Francis said that if he received an invitation from North Korea, he would gladly visit the North for the sake of helping Koreans and the cause of peace, according to Park. …reports Asian Lite News.

President Joe Biden has welcomed as good news Pope Francis’ expression of a willingness to visit North Korea when he met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in Rome, an aide to Moon said.

Biden made the remarks as Moon told him that he asked the pope to visit North Korea to bring peace on the Korean Peninsula and Pope Francis positively reacted to the offer by saying he is willing to go to the North if he receives an invitation, presidential spokesperson Park Kyung-mee said.

Biden welcomed the exchange between Moon and the pope as good news and praised Moon for making progress in bringing peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Moon and Biden held a casual meeting on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Rome, Park said, adding that the informal meeting took place shortly before world leaders posed for a group photo.

Both Moon and Biden held a separate meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican on Friday.

At a meeting with the pope at the Apostolic Palace, Moon told Pope Francis: “If Your Holiness has the opportunity and pays a visit to North Korea, it will build momentum for peace on the Korean Peninsula. Koreans have high expectations,” according to Park.

Pope Francis said that if he received an invitation from North Korea, he would gladly visit the North for the sake of helping Koreans and the cause of peace, according to Park.

The Pope has called for peace on the peninsula and previously expressed a willingness to visit North Korea.

During a meeting with the Pope in 2018, Moon delivered a verbal invitation from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and Francis had said at the time he was willing to visit the North if Pyongyang sends him an official invitation.

No further progress, however, has been made amid a deadlock in talks between the North and the US.

Kareena urges people to not make a taboo of late pregnancy

Kareena Kapoor Khan, the mother of two children, has urged people to not make a taboo of late pregnancy. “I never planned having a baby because you know I was like in 36 or Oh my biological clock is ticking so I need to speed it up or whatever. That was not even a thought or discussion because I was like I married Saif for love. I did that. I wanted to have a child so I did it. It so happened. I didn’t give much thought because my thought was always on my work and you know being happy and content with myself. So I don’t think late mothers should have this pressure,” Kareena said.

Kareena was 36 when she welcomed her first childΒ TaimurΒ with Saif Ali Khan in 2016. After five years, in February 2021, she turned mother again as she gave birth to her sonΒ Jeh. During the latest episode of the ‘Raising Parents with Mansi Zaveri’ podcast, Kareena also opened up about how she balances her time between the two kids. “I think that the fact is that I am a very calm person, I am very composed. I divide my time well. Like I knowΒ TaimurΒ needs me at this point in time. You know I am lucky that he now wakes up later thanΒ Jeh’s so I know I have to be withΒ JehΒ for that hour while he has his breakfast and then onceΒ Jeh’s breakfast is done I knowΒ Taimur’s time is you know coming in.

Β So I just balance it out. The idea is to not have too much pressure on like doing things. The idea is to involve children to take part in your daily life. It’s not like we have to do this and we have to do that. We are not those kind of parents,” she added.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Kareena will be seen sharing screen space with Aamir Khan in ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, which is scheduled to release in 2022. (ANI)

Delectable Chicken Pulau, fit for any festive dinners

CHICKEN PULAU is made in Indian homes more often than biryani. It is the lighter version of biryani. It is one-pot chicken flavoured dish and can be cooked in no time. Scented with warm spices this golden rice pulav pairs well with some curd /raita.

There are many variations of pulav depending on the choices of spices, spice powders and meat or veggies used.

Here chicken is marinated first and then cooked with masalas and biryani. I like to use basmati rice to make this Pulav. It can be prepared with the available ingredients at home. Meat, rice, and aromatic whole spices all woven together creates a great composition.

INGREDIENTS

Basmati rice- 2 & 1/2 cups (3.75 gms one cup)

INGREDIENTS FOR MARINATION

Chicken-750gms

Ginger garlic paste-2 tsp

Garam masala-1/2tsp

Lime juice-1 tsp

Yogurt-4 tbsp

Turmeric- 1/2tsp

Salt- 1 tsp

INGREDIENTS TO MAKE MASALA

Cloves-4

Cardamom-3

Cinnamon stick-2 small stick

Bay leaf- 2

Shah zera-1 tsp

Ghee- 5 tbsp +2 tsp oil

Onion- 2 medium-sized(chopped)

Tomato-2 (chopped)

Green chillies-3 slit

Ginger garlic paste-2 tsp

Kashmiri red chilli powder- 2 1/2tsp

Coriander powder – 2 1/2tsp

Garam masala- 1 tsp

Coriander leaves- a handful

Mint leaves- handful

Salt- accordingly

Hot water-4 cups

METHOD

1. Wash the chicken nicely and marinate it with yoghurt turmeric, ginger-garlic paste, garam masala, lime juice, salt and refrigerate it for half an hour.

2. Wash and soak rice for 20 minutes.

3. Heat a heavy bottom pan on low medium flame. Add ghee and    oil, when it turns hot add all the dry spices. You can see the spices splutter.

4. Add the onions now and sautΓ© till it turns golden brown.

5. To this add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies and sautΓ© till the raw smell goes.

6. Add chopped tomatoes and cook till it turns mushy & soft.

7. Add all the masalas now – Kashmiri red chilli powder, coriander powder, gram masala. SautΓ© for 2 to 3 minutes.

8. Now add chopped coriander leaves and mint leaves and sautΓ© till you get a good aroma.

9. Add the marinated chicken and mix everything well and cook the chicken till it’s almost done.

10. Add hot water and salt accordingly and mix everything and allow the water boil.

11. Now add the drained rice & stir well. Adjust the salt. Let this cook till the water reduces to half.

12. Once the water is half its volume, reduce the flame. Close the lid and cook for 20 to 25 minutes. Occasionally stir the rice.

13. Remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork. Garnish it with some coriander leaves. Serve hot with raita.

Add some fire to your weekend cooking by trying this Pulav. It’s utterly satisfying.

Happy cooking!

Jaishankar, Blinken discuss strategic partnership

Jaishankar tweeted after the Rome meeting that they had a “good meeting” and “discussed a wide gamut of issues relating to our partnership. Updated each other on important regional concerns”, reports Arul Louis

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met in Rome to discuss broadening strategic cooperation across the world as the two democracies are raising their relations to new levels.

They discussed “efforts to deepen the US-India Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership” during their meeting on Saturday on the sidelines of the 16th G20 Summit, according to State Department Spokesperson Ned Price.

New Delhi and Washington have turned to the other side of the Indian Ocean that India straddles after firming up cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region multilaterally with the Quad – the grouping of their countries and Australia and Japan.

Earlier this month, Jaishankar and Blinken held a virtual meeting with Foreign Ministers Yair Lapid of Israel and Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) — four countries that share many regional strategic interests — and discussed “future opportunities for collaboration in the region and globally”, according to the State Department.

Jaishankar tweeted after the Rome meeting that they had a “good meeting” and “discussed a wide gamut of issues relating to our partnership. Updated each other on important regional concerns”.

Price said that efforts to strengthen cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region through the Quad and common regional priorities were also discussed.

Expanding global access to vaccines was another topic they discussed given India’s position as the world’s largest producer of vaccines, he said.

India is the linchpin in the Quad’s initiative to supply 1.2 billion vaccines that was reiterated at the summit of the leaders of the four countries last month in Washington.

Prime Ministers Narendra Modi of India and Scott Morrison of Australia, US President Joe Biden and the then-Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced at their summit that their Vaccine Partnership was on track to expand the capacity of India’s Biological E Ltd to produce at least 1 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccines by the end of next year.

Price’s readout of the meeting between Jaishankar and Blinken also contained the obligatory reference to democracy, which some in India and in the US would latch on to giving it deeper meanings.

It said they discussed “reinforcing their mutual commitments to and support for shared democratic values”.

However, despite Biden’s statements making his administration the global beacon of democracy, such references to democracy are missing in readouts of Blinken’s meetings with leaders of most countries, especially those that are not democratic.

For example, references to democracy were left out of the India, US, Israel and UAE meeting, likely in deference to the Gulf nation.

It didn’t figure in the readout of his recent meetings with Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani or Zayed or Saudi Foreign Ministers Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.

Blinken and Jaishankar have been in close contact through phone calls and virtual meetings and have met in London in May, in Washington also in May and in New Delhi in July.

They are expected to meet again this year in Washington along with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin for the 2+2 ministerial meeting of the defence and foreign policy heads of the two nations.
