CODA scripts history at Oscars

Jane Campion, staved off competition from the likes of Seven Spielberg and Kenneth Branagh, to win the award for Best Director for her much-admired film, ‘The Power of the Dog’…reports Asian Lite News

The coming-of-age comedy-drama ‘CODA’ (which, incidentally, is the acronym for Child of Deaf Adults) and Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic ‘Dune’ emerged as the biggest winners at the just-concluded 94th Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theater here.

‘Dune’ bagged six awards, all in technical categories; ‘CODA’ made Oscar history by winning the awards in all three categories it was nominated in. It also became the first film from a major streaming platform — Apple TV — to bag the prestigious award of ‘Best Picture’, becoming thereby the first official nod from the Academy to the tectonic shift taking place in the entertainment industry because of the rise of OTT platforms in the Covid-19 era.

Jane Campion, staved off competition from the likes of Seven Spielberg and Kenneth Branagh, to win the award for Best Director for her much-admired film, ‘The Power of the Dog’.

‘Dune’ got the better of some serious competition — notably from ‘Shang-Chi’ and ‘Spider-Man’ — bagged Oscars for Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score and Best Sound. ‘CODA’ took home the honours for Best Supporting Actor (Troy Kotsur), Best Adapted Screenplay (Sian Heder) and Best Picture of course.

Will Smith, who had earlier slapped comedian Chris Rock across his face over a joke directed at his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, won the honour for Best Lead Actor owing to his performance in ‘King Richard’.

The biographical drama ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’ won two awards — Best Lead Actress for Jessica Chastain and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

The broadcast from Dolby Theater also honoured the history of the art form of films as it brought back the casts of classics such as ‘The Godfather’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’ and celebrated the 60th anniversary of James Bond with a presentation featuring skateboarder Tony Hawk, surfer Kelly Slater and snowboarder Shaun White.

Ariana DeBose was feted with the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in Steven Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story’. Best Animated Feature Film went to Disney’s ‘Encanto’. The Japanese film ‘Drive My Car’, an international awards circuit favourite, clinched the title for eBest International Film’.

Jenny Beavan was conferred with Best Costume Design for ‘Cruella’, a film she initially almost refused to work on. Kenneth Branagh walked away with ‘Best Original Screenplay’ for his writing in the coming-of-age drama, ‘Belfast’.

Other winners included ‘Summer of Soul’, which won Best Documentary Feature; ‘No Time To Die’ (Best Original Song) for the title track by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell; ‘The Queen of Basketball’ (Best Documentary Short Subject); ‘The Windshield Wiper’ (Best Animated Short Film); and ‘The Long Goodbye’ (Best Live Action Short Film).

‘Godzilla Vs Kong’ sequel is set to shoot in Queensland

Legendary/Warner Bros’ ‘Godzilla Vs Kong’ previously shot in Queensland and went on to gross over $468M globally…reports Asian Lite News

A currently untitled sequel to 2021 blockbuster ‘Godzilla Vs Kong’ is set to shoot in Queensland, Australia, according to government agency Screen Queensland.

According to ‘Deadline’, State Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said today that cameras will roll later this year in locations across the Gold Coast and the southeast on the Legendary picture which will be the fifth in its Monsterverse franchise.

Details of the sequel have been kept under wraps, although ‘Godzilla Vs Kong’ director Adam Wingard told Deadline last year he would “absolutely love to continue” with the franchise, reports ‘Deadline’.

He added, “The clear starting point we teed up (in GVK), exploring Hollow Earth, I think there is a lot more to do there. This is a pre-history of Planet Earth, where all the titans come from. We tee up some mystery in this film, things I want to see resolved and explored and pushed to the next level.”

Legendary/Warner Bros’ ‘Godzilla Vs Kong’ previously shot in Queensland and went on to gross over $468M globally. Prior to GVK, 2017’s Kong Skull Island also set up shop in the region.

Producer Eric McLeod commented, “The highly skilled crews, first-rate facilities, and unique locations make filming in Australia a great experience. The Federal government’s support has always been critical to our success in achieving a high level of filmmaking and an unparalleled audience experience.”

Added Palaszczuk, “The production is expected to inject more than double the $36.5 million that Godzilla Vs Kong brought to the state and is a welcome boost to our economy as we recover from the impacts of the global pandemic and southeast Queensland flooding events. These types of productions benefit our screen industry, deliver local jobs and provide a welcome boost to our small businesses and communities in and around our production sites.”

‘I just want to be Batman the entire time’

Warner Bros. Pictures has released ‘The Batman’ pan-India on March 4 in Hindi, English, Tamil and Telugu…reports Asian Lite News

Hollywood star Robert Pattinson feels that he accidentally planted the seed with producer Dylan Clark for the role of Batman in the latest cape crusader film.

“I think I accidentally planted the seed. I was meeting Dylan for something else and then… Actually, to be honest, I think I definitely was angling after it, but I didn’t know what the status of the project was.

“But I remember talking to Dylan for a long time then just right at the end, being, “So what’s happening with The Batman?” But it didn’t really fit into the kind of stuff I was doing then. But for some reason, with Batman… It’s literally the only comic character I’d ever do. It’s by far the coolest one. And I thought it was completely out of reach as well.

He added: “So, I was like, “Oh, I might as well just throw my cap in the ring.” I didn’t realize that Matt was thinking about me for it as well, which is a lovely coincidence.”

What did Pattinson think about his take on this character when you first heard it, or read the script?

The actor said: It’s funny, because I didn’t quite realize why it felt so different at first, and I actually had to talk to him about it afterwards, and he’s like, “Oh, it’s because Bruce isn’t a playboy in it. He’s not a playboy and he hasn’t got control.”

” Normally in all the other movies, he has complete control of the delineation of when he’s Bruce in public, when he’s Bruce in private and when he’s Batman, and he can just change at will. Whereas in this film, he’s basically Batman the whole time, in a way; he’s just let Bruce disappear. I mean, Bruce feels nothing about himself, Bruce is just this afterthought to his life. Which is sad in a way.”

Sharing more details about his take on Bruce Wayne, Pattinson said: “But Bruce as a person starts to reawaken as the story goes along, but he just thinks, “I just want to abandon it all. I just want to be Batman the entire time. And I just sleep as Bruce,” basically.”

Warner Bros. Pictures has released ‘The Batman’ pan-India on March 4 in Hindi, English, Tamil and Telugu.

Berlin Film Festival showcases Ukrainian history, calls for peace

The statement pointed out that the festival has, through its history, showcased films relating to Ukrainian history and culture…reports Asian Lite News

The Berlin Film Festival has called for peace over the situation in Ukraine, which is currently in a state of military conflict after Russian forces launched operations on Thursday morning.

“We — festival workers, artists, filmmakers — think fondly of our friends in Ukraine and we are by their side in a call for peace,” the festival said in a statement.

“One week ago, the Berlin International Film Festival was celebrating a complicated yet successful edition. Filmmakers, artists and journalists from all over the world gathered in Berlin to enjoy a collective and joyful experience. The feeling of being together again, with no distinctions of nationality, religion, or culture, transported us in a way that film festivals can accomplish,” the statement added.

“While these memories remain fresh, other images have broken into our lives, bringing a darker perspective. The world is on a verge of a huge crisis. As a showcase of the free world, the Berlinale has always put at its centre the notion of freedom and the will to bridge East and West.”

The statement pointed out that the festival has, through its history, showcased films relating to Ukrainian history and culture.

This included the 2022 selection, Maryna El Gorbach’s ‘Klondike’, set in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, where fighting is taking place on the nearby Russian-Ukrainian border in 2014.

The festival also showed ‘Terykony’ by Taras Tomenko, Oleg Sentsov’s “Numbers” in 2020, the films of Kira Muratova and the early short films of Myroslav Slaboshpytsky.

“Films cannot change the society and the course of history, but they can help in changing the minds of people. Films are telling us that the world is already in a too precarious condition to add even more suffering and destruction,” the statement concluded.

Uncharted: Goes beyond expectations, tops box-office

The narrative navigates through a razor-thin script overloaded with mad-dash caper, propelled by actors you wish after a while had more meaningful things to exhibit…reports Troy Rebeiro

  • (Running in Theatres); Duration: 116 minutes, Director: Ruben Fleischer, Cast: Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, Sophia Ali, Tati Gabrielle, Antonio Banderas, Patricia Meeden, Sarah Petrick, 33 Rudy Pankow (Rating: **1/2)

‘Uncharted’ is an action-packed adventure film based on a video game series- of the same name. It is an origin story that introduces us to treasure hunter Nathan Drake. At the same time, it is an action thriller about two lethally competing scavenger-hunt teams.

Squeezing action sequences from the multiple games series, ‘Uncharted’ ironically does not waste any time- in explaining the backstories of any of its characters or unnecessary exposition. It directly plunges into action and adventure that takes place, in the air, on the water, and in the tombs.

Tom Holland plays Nathan Drake, an orphan whose only close relative is his brother Sam (Rudy Pankow), who he has not seen in years. Now older, Nathan works as a bartender and petty thief who snatches jewellery off his customers while waiting for them.

Then one day, he meets Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg), who recruits him to find the legendary stash of gold, which essentially is pirate booty that was dumped- by the survivors of the Magellan expedition in 1522. Sully also assures Nathan that they might find his long-lost brother Sam. The two of them soon plan an auction-house heist which does not go as planned.

It does not take long for them to meet other mercenaries and henchmen, whether they are allies or adversaries. Topping the list are; Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas)- the pair’s chief rival whose ancestors had funded the Magellan mission, Chloe Frazer (Sophia Ali) – an associate of Sully with whom Nathan shares a relationship, Jo Braddock (Tati Gabrielle) – an associate of Moncada, and the Scottish hooligan (Steven Waddington) whose brogue is so thick that it is virtually difficult to understand him. They all keep everyone in this world spinning on their toes.

The narrative navigates through a razor-thin script overloaded with mad-dash caper, propelled by actors you wish after a while had more meaningful things to exhibit.

On the performance front- Tom Holland pulls off Nathan Drake with aplomb. In a rough and beefed-up mode, Tom exhibits physical flair as well as the same boyishly ingratiating persona that he displayed as Peter Parker, but with a hint of darkness added.

On the other hand, Sully, Mark Wahlberg does a decent job of playing the wise-cracking mentor to Holland. Making his eyes go opaque, he has a funny way of simultaneously making you want to trust and distrust him that balances well with Holland’s goofy, clumsy nature.

Nevertheless, both display a fair amount of chemistry as their characters- try to solve clues leading to the treasure. However, very often, their banter seems forced to generate a laugh or distract the audience from the lacklustre, cat-and-mouse plot.

Antonio Banderas is spot-on as the ruthless Spanish tycoon who would do anything, even eliminate the members of his own family, who might come in his way of finding the loot. So is Tati Gabrielle as the sexy Jo Braddock, who has a penchant for using knives in combat.

Sophia Ali is competent as the unreliable Chloe Frazer, an off-and-on ally of Nathan.

Mounted with ace production values, the absurdity of the action set-pieces proves more exhilarating than exhausting. There is a breathless chase through Barcelona’s tourist sites, a flamboyant plane sequence that also involves – a falling car, helicopters in an action explosion, and a fair number of fights.

Overall, ‘Uncharted’ despite its flaws, is a popcorn blockbuster that you will enjoy if you keep your mind aside.

‘Cinema has never been more thrilling than it has a chance to be’

Gal Gadot and Kenneth Branagh-starrer ‘Death on the Nile’ is all set to release in India on February 11…reports Asian Lite News

Kenneth Branagh, the director of the upcoming murder mystery ‘Death On The Nile’, recently spoke about how with changing times the tonal quality of movies is also changing.

The director also shared his thoughts about his shooting experience while travelling to holiday hotspots like Egypt, where a major chunk of the film has been shot.

The director said, “For me, the escapism and the transportation are so total. It is a wonderfully immersive, illusory experience that is very full and thick. The depth, the detail, the chance to replicate the experience of the human eye is absolutely at its premium.”

He further said, “And it is a very unusual and unique opportunity (especially in the wake of what we’ve all been through recently, the pandemic) to share the experience of community in the telling of a story in a socially distanced, smaller audience-auditorium with a massive wall of communication and picture and sensory stimulation.”

Talking about the dynamism in cinema, he added, “Cinema has never been more attractive. Cinema has never been more vital and cinema has never been more thrilling than it has a chance to be, coming out of lockdown and coming into stories like ‘Death on the Nile'”.

‘Death on the Nile’ is based on Agatha Christie’s novel of the same name and is a follow up to ‘The Murder On The Orient Express’. Produced by 20th Century Studios, the film features an ensemble cast which includes Kenneth Branagh, Tom Bateman, Gal Gadot, Ali Fazal and Emma Mackey in pivotal roles among others. ‘Mission: Impossible’ 7 and 8′ to release after 2022

Mission: Impossible’ films involve complex shoots as they are replete with stunts and effects, with the filmmaking team relying very less on the ‘green screen’…reports Asian Lite News

The release dates of two films from the Tom Cruise-starrer spy action series: ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ and ‘Mission: Impossible 8’ have been pushed in view of the Covid surge in the US and across Europe.

‘Mission: Impossible 7’, which was earlier supposed to make its debut on September 30, will now premiere on July 14, 2023, reports ‘Variety’. ‘Mission: Impossible 8’, which was slated for a July 7, 2023, release, will instead open on June 28, 2024.

This is not the first time that the release of ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ has been pushed back. The film, co-produced by Skydance and Paramount Pictures, was originally scheduled to open on July 23, 2021, but has been postponed multiple times.

The production companies said in a joint statement quoted by ‘Variety’: “After thoughtful consideration, Paramount Pictures and Skydance have decided to postpone the release dates for ‘Mission: Impossible 7 & 8’ in response to delays due to the ongoing pandemic. … We look forward to providing moviegoers with an unparalleled theatrical experience.”

‘Mission: Impossible’ films involve complex shoots as they are replete with stunts and effects, with the filmmaking team relying very less on the ‘green screen’. The team also jets from one foreign port of call to another (the latest films, for instance, have been shot in the U.K., Italy and Poland, to name a few locations), an exercise which seems to have been severely affected in the post-pandemic world, according to ‘Variety’.
