This scholarship was started in 1902 by Stephen Schwarzman, inspired by the Rhodes Scholarship, a scholarship to promote world understanding and peace….reports ALTAF HUSSAIN JANJUA

Funded by American billionaire Stephen Schwarzman, ‘Schwarzman Scholars’ is one of the few top scholarships in the world, for which thousands of candidates from all over the world submit applications every year.

This scholarship was started in 1902 by Stephen Schwarzman, inspired by the Rhodes Scholarship, a scholarship to promote world understanding and peace.

For Schwarzman Scholars-2022, a young girl has been selected for the first time from the Jammu province of Jammu and Kashmir. Twenty-year-old Pallavi Sarin is the founder of the digital media organisation ‘The Straight Line’ and is currently working as a correspondent from Jammu with a national news organisation.

This year, five candidates from India have been selected for Schwarzman Scholars-2022, of which three are of Indian origin but live abroad. Only three per cent of the ‘Schwarzman Scholars’ are selected after intense competition.

After the Schwarzman Scholars-2022 scholarship, they will have the opportunity to do a one-year Master’s degree in ‘Global Affairs’ at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. Their living, accommodation and food will all be under the ‘Schwarzman Scholarship’.

Three hundred candidates applied for this scholarship, of which 151 from 36 countries and 121 universities were selected from all over the world.

Stephen A. Schwarzman, Founding Trustee of ‘Schwarzman Scholars’, said, “As the geopolitical landscape becomes more complex every day, I look forward to this year’s selected scholars and their ability to thoughtfully engage with global issues and drive change. We are confident that this inspiring group of young leaders will make the most of this unique opportunity.”

Scholars are selected through a rigorous application process that recognises their leadership potential, intelligence and strength of character. More than 400 candidates from 60 countries were invited to interview with a panel of CEOs, government officials, university presidents, journalists and non-profit executives.

Sharing Spaces with ‘The Slum Queen’

“Is art just for art’s sake?” This question provoked artist Rouble  Nagi’s very personal journey into Asia’s largest slums. Developing this initiative with a clear focus of uplifting the lives of the local slum dwellers, led to documentation of her own journey in her inspiring autobiography ‘The Slum Queen’ ….

By Soniya Kirpalani; Images Santosh Rai

There is a notable dichotomy in the title “The Slum Queen”, but this does not detract from the ethos of Rouble Nagi, nor the impact her work has on India’s largest slums and remote villages. An award-winning, internationally acclaimed artist-turned-social- activist, Nagi’s book is a refreshing departure from the norm of self-praise autobiographies. Taking the readers on a journey into one of Asia’s largest slums, Nagi’s vivid memories string up stories, to build a magical connection between the readers and her protagonists.

Rouble Nagi – ‘The Slum Queen’

Divided into 11 chapters, ‘The Slum Queen’ follows the life of Rouble Nagi, from her growing years, then across India as she backpacked with her military family. Recounting her childhood experiences, where she was imbibing diverse cultures, she reflects on how intuitively these experiences have guided her mindset as an artist, a human being and a communicator. With over 800 murals and 150 exhibitions worldwide to her credit, Nagi became the first woman artist to be invited to exhibit at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum Gallery. Going from being an artist into an author and social worker, every page from ‘The Slum Queen’ reveals her trajectory with subtilty.

“The slums’ beautification via art is merely a stepping stone for addressing issues concerning the people living in the slums and villages. Filled with includes wonderful anecdotes of the hopes and dreams of people who live in these communities, their struggles, and the challenges we first encountered when trying to establish our first ‘Misaal’ campaign,” explains Nagi. With every chapter the writer weaves a chord of empathy, in a poignant and prolific manner, even as she chisels out the harsh realities, provoking raw emotion, but the visual descriptions of humans rising, sparks inspiration.

Sharing her trajectory, through her memories, she develops a colourful canvas of delightful experiences reflecting on the various ‘Misaal India’ workshops and skill centres that have been started in the slums and villages across India and how their inhabitants see their dreams being fulfilled. Peppering her stories, with philosophical questions, her pen provokes the readers to introspect and question the purpose of their lives. Without fabrication, sans drama, she highlights what led to the development ofRouble Nagi Art Foundation (RNAF) and how continues is transforming slums and villages with creativity across Mumbai, Delhi, Kashmir, Jammu, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, and Telangana.

A book that provokes introspection and makes an exciting addition to any bookshelf, was currently launched during Nagi’s whirlwind tour to Dubai. Between book signings, she delivered a heartwarming speech at the India Consulate. Hosted at the Consulate Auditorium, Consulate General of India, Dubai, this was a very well-attended session, by leading businessmen, socialites and intellectuals from both Arabs and Indians.

Sitharaman, Harris feature on Forbes’ 100 most powerful women

This is the fourth year in a row that Sitharaman made it to the list. Last year, she was in the 37th spot, 41st in 2020 and 34th in 2019…reports Asian Lite News

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and US Vice President Kamala Harris are among Forbes’ 19th annual list of ‘World’s 100 Most Powerful Women’ of 2022.

While Harris is ranked third, Sitharaman is at number 36 on the list that was released on Tuesday highlighting “innovators and instigators who are leading on the world stage to redefine traditional power structures”.

This is the fourth year in a row that Sitharaman made it to the list. Last year, she was in the 37th spot, 41st in 2020 and 34th in 2019.

In 2021, Harris became the first woman, the first Black person, and the first South Asian-American to become the American Vice President.

A California native, Harris was born in Oakland to immigrant parents — her mother was from India and father from Jamaica.

Apart from Harris, Bela Bajaria, head of Global TV at Netflix, is another Indian-American on the list who is ranked at number 71.

Bajaria is responsible for hits including ‘Bridgerton’, ‘The Queen’s Gambit’, ‘Lupin’ and ‘Cobra Kai’.

Before joining Netflix in 2016, Bajaria was president of Universal Television, where she made history as the first woman of color to oversee a studio.

London-born Bajaria was named to TIME’s 100 Most Influential People list in 2022.

Sitharaman was appointed as India’s first female Finance Minister in May 2019. Before her career in politics, she held roles at the UK-based Agricultural Engineers Association and the BBC World Service.

Besides Sitharaman, other Indians on the list include, HCL Corporation CEO Roshni Nadar Malhotra — the youngest Indian woman on the list; Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw; Madhabi Puri Buch, the first female chair of the Securities and Exchange Board of India; Soma Mondal, the first woman to chair the state-run Steel Authority of India; and Nykaa founder Falguni Nayar.

Every year, the American business magazine releases a list of 100 powerful women of the world.

This year’s list was topped by European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen “for her leadership during the Ukraine war, as well as her handling of the Covid-19 pandemic”.

ASEAN to ensure women’s security in Southeast Asia

The ASEAN Regional Plan of Action on Women, Peace and Security was adopted by the ASEAN leaders during the 40th and 41st ASEAN summits…reports Asian Lite News

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) launched a regional plan of action on women’s peace and security on Monday in partnership with UN Women.

The ASEAN Regional Plan of Action on Women, Peace and Security (ASEAN RPA on WPS) was adopted by the ASEAN leaders during the 40th and 41st ASEAN summits in Phnom Penh last month as a key deliverable during the ASEAN chairmanship of Cambodia, Xinhua news agency reported citing a joint statement as saying.

It aims to advance commitments to the women’s peace and security agenda and turn them into action, it said.

Cambodian Minister of Women’s Affairs Ing Kantha Phavi said the development of the ASEAN RPA on WPS is a major step forward to fulfil ASEAN’s vision in achieving gender equality.

“Promoting women’s roles and participation across all realms of peace and security ranging from conflict prevention, peace building, preventing violent extremism and tackling emerging security risks such as disaster and pandemics in the region is imperative to reach our goal as inclusive and people-centred community,” she said.

“ASEAN is committed to continuing to forge ahead with advancing WPS agenda and the ASEAN RPA on WPS will guide our ways.”

The regional plan of action is a major step forward in ASEAN’s efforts to ensure that its 10 member states recognise and leverage women’s participation and leadership in preventing conflict and in maintaining peace in the region.

UN Women in Asia and the Pacific regional director Sarah Knibbs said the women, peace and security agenda was founded with a simple but transformative idea that peace was fundamentally linked to equality between women and men.

“The ASEAN Regional Plan of Action on WPS provides a critical framework for realizing a more inclusive and sustainable peace in this region and a starting point to mainstream WPS into peace and security decision-making in the region,” she said.

The launch event called for ASEAN member states to commit themselves to effectively implementing the ASEAN RPA on WPS, the statement said.

Founded in 1967, ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Frappart makes history as first woman referee in men’s World Cup match

The 36-year-old is eagerly looking forward to the World Cup and her chance to take the centre stage as a match referee…reports Asian Lite News

On Thursday night at the Al Bayt stadium in Al Khor, fans attending the crunch match between Costa Rica and Germany were in witness to a new chapter of football history being written on the football turf.

When the kick off of the last and concluding match of the Group E, French referee Stephanie Frappart entered the record books as the first woman to take charge of a FIFA World Cup match.

Her appointment was announced by the tournament organisers on Tuesday and means the 38-year-old match official will take her place in the history of the game. Frappart took charge of two matches in the qualifiers for the tournament, but her presence at the World Cup itself is a significant moment.

The Frenchwoman was the fourth official in the 0-0 draw between Mexico and Poland of Group C, becoming the first woman to occupy the role at a men’s World Cup.

Frappart is no stranger to the biggest stage in the game, having officiated in six matches at the last two FIFA Women’s World Cup competitions – Canada 2015 and France 2019.

Frappart felt a special pride in representing France as a FIFA World Cup referee.

“I felt enormous emotion because it wasn’t particularly expected that I would be picked. So, (I feel) a lot of pride, a lot of honour, to represent France at the World Cup.”

Frappart said that being a referee at the FIFA World Cup 2022 would mean that she would have to keep emotions in check to ensure optimal performance on the pitch.

“I think I’ll have everything that’s around me in mind, and the aim will still be the same, that is the referee according to the performance on the pitch. So, I’m really going to head into this with enormous emotion, but you have to channel that because clearly the important thing is the pitch.”

“The first thing will be all the emotions of returning to the World Cup stadium, packed with a large crowd and plenty of expectations. But after that, I’ll be focused on the pitch because we need to make the correct decisions and perform well by concentrating on the primary objective on the pitch.”

Besides, two other women referees are on the brink of history as they look set to officiate at the men’s football World Cup in the coming days after Frappart.

Yamashita Yoshimi and Salima Mukansanga have all been named among the 36 referees selected for the tournament that concludes on December 18.

They will also be joined by Neuza Back of Brazil, Mexico’s Karen Diaz Medina and American Kathryn Nesbitt who are headed to the World Cup as three of 69 assistant referees. Japanese Yamashita is set to appear at a second consecutive World Cup after officiating the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France. She also took charge at the 2020 Olympic Games, held in 2021, in a game between the USA and Sweden.

Yamashita is another one who has set her own records on the referees front this year. She officiated the AFC Champions League between Melbourne City and Jeonnam Dragons in the FC Tokyo and Kyoto Sanga match of the J1 League – becoming the first female referee to do so.

The 36-year-old is eagerly looking forward to the World Cup and her chance to take the centre stage as a match referee.

“There are hardly any female referees in the Middle East, so I would like to see that change, with the Qatar World Cup as the catalyst,” she said recently.

“The fact that women are officiating for the first time at a men’s World Cup is a sign to other people that women’s potential is always growing and that is something I also feel strongly about.”

This initiative was launched in 2020 and took two years of research and selection, which was done meticulously from a huge list of nominations received through various bodies and think tanks as well as individuals.

“Kerala’s Muslim women have come a long way since Maliyekkal Mariyumma from Thalassery defied the conservatives in her community in the 1930s to study English and pursue her school education.,” the editorial panel said in a statement. “The Muslim heartland of Malappuram now produces toppers in all sorts of educational competitive examination thanks to the tireless work by organisations such as the Muslim Education Society and the Centre for Information and Guidance India among others.

Khushboo Mirza : An inspiration for girls

Dr Rahat Abrar says that whenever Mission Chandrayaan is mentioned, the success story of Aligarh Muslim University student Khushboo Mirza becomes fresh…reports Asian Lite News

Chandrayaan-1, which holds an important place in the Indian space program, is completing 12 years on 22 October. Aligarh Muslim University also has a deep connection with this mission. University student Khushboo Mirza played an important role in this mission. It was through this mission that the signs of the presence of water on the surface of the Moon were confirmed. Khushboo Mirza is still in ISRO and she has also been a part of Chandrayaan-2 mission.

She worked with the development team of the Chandrayaan and Chandrayaan 2 and was honored by ISRO Team Excellence Award in April 2015.

Dr Rahat Abrar, former director of the Urdu Academy of Aligarh Muslim University and author of the book Chilman Se Chandrayaan, says that Khushboo Mirza passed the B.Tech (Electrical Engineering) examination from AMU in 2006. Khushboo Mirza is originally from Amroha. Her father passed away in 1985. Due to which her childhood was spent in a lot of difficulties, but she did not give up and continued her studies.

He said that in his book he has mentioned how daughters studying in Aligarh Muslim University have raised their flags of success till the moon on the basis of their education. He said that Khushboo has got a promotion in ISRO itself and now she has attained the rank of director. She is the second Muslim person to do so. Prior to this, former President of the country APJ Abdul Kalam was the only Muslim person in this post.

Dr Rahat Abrar says that whenever Mission Chandrayaan is mentioned, the success story of Aligarh Muslim University student Khushboo Mirza becomes fresh.

The family of Khushboo comes from a famous but small town of Amroha in West UP. The family has been facing all sorts of questions like their beliefs, secular credentials and similar stuff. In a telephonic chat, Khushbu reveals the same alienation. “I am a modern Muslim. I am an engineer, I wear western clothes, but I also read the namaaz five times a day and fast during Ramzaan. I see no incompatibility between these,” she said.

“Our family has been an educated one. Delhi Minorities Commission chairman Kamal Faruqui is our relative. Khushbu’s aunt taught at Welham Boys School at Dehradun. Her cousin Shabana Khan teaches at Mississippi University,” said Farhat Mirza, her mother.

Khushtar says after the Chandrayaan-1 mission, when Khushbu’s picture with President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was printed in a local newspaper, everyone appreciated the choices made by Khushbu and her mother. The entire town came to congratulate the family.

Khushbu is now a big inspiration for the girls of Amroha. Everyone wants their daughters’ to go to school and become like her.

When she is visiting her hometown, Khushbu is invited as the chief guest and speaker in educational institutions. Khushtar and Mehak are also engineers.

The Gram Bharati 2022 exhibition which brought together women from self-help groups across India, housed a wide range of stalls that saw an array of beautiful handicrafts, artefacts, jewelleries, and delicious food products.

For many of these women, the journey has been full of life-altering challenges and extraordinary struggles which they overcame with perseverance, hard work, and dedication. These difficulties taught them to become self-sufficient and rely on learning livelihood skills with the help of organisations like the Adani Foundation.

The recently held Gram Bharati 2022 exhibition, served as a platform to showcase the promising talent of several such remarkable female entrepreneurs.

Various women’s self-help groups from different parts of the country such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh affiliated with the Adani Foundation participated in this program. However, the handicrafts exhibited by the self-help group hailing from Mundra (Gujarat) were the most talked about.

The exhibition was organised at the Adani Corporate House, Ahmedabad, and was inaugurated by Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani Group, on the first day of Navratri.

The visionary leader also launched a book, ‘Pragati’, which talks about success stories of 75 female entrepreneurs from Mundra. The exhibition also saw women entrepreneurs participating from the hinterland of India. The women of Umarpada village of Surat district presented delicious varieties of bamboo pickles.

These tribal women who have been making bamboo pickles at home for years now are now being professionally trained by various self-help groups and organisations like the Adani Foundation and Mission Mangalam, on how to preserve these pickles for a longer time and commercialize it. They are also trained in making papad, other types of pickles, and spices.
