Western leaders in Kyiv to show support on war anniversary

Meloni and Trudeau are expected to sign security pacts with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy during their brief stay, in line with deals recently agreed with France and Germany that are worth billions of dollars…reports Asian Lite News

Four Western leaders arrived in Kyiv on Saturday to show solidarity with Ukraine on the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, which has cost tens of thousands of lives and ravaged the country’s economy.

The prime ministers of Italy, Canada and Belgium – Giorgia Meloni, Justin Trudeau and Alexander De Croo – travelled with the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on an overnight train from neighbouring Poland.

Their presence was designed to underline the West’s commitment to helping Ukraine even as it suffers growing shortages of military supplies, impacting its performance on the battlefield where Moscow is grinding out territorial gains.

Von der Leyen wrote on the social media platform X that she was in Kyiv “to celebrate the extraordinary resistance of the Ukrainian people”. She added: “More than ever, we stand firmly by Ukraine. Financially, economically, militarily, morally. Until the country is finally free.”

Meloni and Trudeau are expected to sign security pacts with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy during their brief stay, in line with deals recently agreed with France and Germany that are worth billions of dollars.

However, $61 billion in aid promised by U.S. President Joe Biden is being blocked by Republicans in Congress, casting a long shadow over Kyiv’s hopes of pushing back the much larger, better supplied Russian military.

Biden is due to take part in a video conference call of fellow leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) major democracies on Saturday, which will be chaired by Meloni, with Zelenskiy invited to join the discussion.

Italy holds the rotating presidency of the G7 and organised the call, saying it was vital to challenge perceptions that the West had grown weary of the conflict and that Russia was winning.

When Russian tanks and infantry streamed across the border before dawn on Feb. 24, 2022, Ukraine’s 40 million people defied expectations – and the Kremlin’s best-laid plans – by holding them back and preventing a widely predicted defeat.

But as the war enters its third year, setbacks on the eastern front have left the Ukraine army looking vulnerable. Seeking to maintain Western focus on Ukraine, even as the war between Israel and Hamas dominates headlines, Zelenskiy has warned that Russia, led by President Vladimir Putin, may not stop at Ukraine’s borders if it emerges victorious.

Putin dismisses such claims as nonsense. He casts the war as a wider struggle with the United States, which the Kremlin elite says aims to cleave Russia apart. The West sees the invasion as an unjustified act of aggression that must be repelled.

There will be events across Ukraine on Saturday to mark the anniversary, including a commemoration service for those who died in Bucha, north of Kyiv – scene of some of the worst alleged war crimes of the conflict.

Ukraine’s prosecutor general said on Friday it had launched investigations into more than 122,000 suspected war crimes cases in the last two years. Russia denies carrying them out.

The initial shock of the invasion gradually morphed into familiarity and then fatigue, as the world watched initial Russian gains and a stunning Ukrainian counteroffensive in late 2022 slow into grinding, attritional trench warfare.

In scenes reminiscent of the battlefields of World War One, soldiers under heavy artillery fire are dying in their thousands, sometimes for a few kilometres of land. Both sides have developed huge and increasingly sophisticated fleets of air, sea and land drones for surveillance and attack, an unprecedented use of unmanned vehicles that could point the way to future conflicts.

Russia, with a much bigger population to replenish the army’s ranks and a larger military budget, might favour a drawn-out war, although the costs have been huge for Moscow as it seeks to navigate sanctions and a growing reliance on China.

Ukraine’s position is more precarious. Villages, towns and cities have been razed, troops are exhausted, ammunition is running low and Russian missiles and drones rain down almost daily.

Russia this month registered its biggest victory in nine months, capturing the eastern town of Avdiivka and ending months of deadly urban combat. yet Zelenskiy remained defiant ahead of the anniversary.

“I am convinced that victory awaits us,” he told diplomats in Kyiv this week in an emotional address. “In particular, thanks to unity and your support.” Tens of thousands of troops have been killed on both sides and tens of thousands more wounded, while thousands of Ukrainian civilians have perished.

The scale of devastation in Ukraine is staggering. A recent World Bank study said that rebuilding Ukraine’s economy could cost nearly $500 billion. Two million housing units have been damaged or destroyed, and nearly 6 million people have fled abroad.

In addition to raising money and arms to continue the war, Zelenskiy is pushing legislation through parliament allowing Ukraine to mobilise up to half a million more troops – a target some economists say could paralyse the economy.

Russia’s finances have proved resilient so far to unprecedented sanctions. While natural gas exports have slumped, shipments of oil have held up, thanks largely to Indian and Chinese buying.

Russia’s GDP expanded 3.6% in 2023, although some Russia-based economists warned that this was driven by a leap in defence spending and that stagnation or recession loom.

That will not jeopardise Putin’s victory in elections in March, which he is set to win by a landslide amid broad support for his performance and for the war, described by the Kremlin as a “special military operation”.

In the last two years, authorities have cracked down hard on any form of dissent over the conflict. On Feb. 16, Putin’s most formidable domestic opponent, Alexei Navalny, died in an Arctic penal colony where he was serving a 30-year sentence.

On Friday, Putin addressed troops fighting in Ukraine as Russia marked Defender of the Fatherland Day, hailing them as heroes battling for “truth and justice.”

He laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier at the foot of the Kremlin wall to honour those who have died in battle.

He expressed hope that peace prevails around the world and everyone enjoys freedom and human rights across humanity…reports Asian Lite News

The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) of the Tibetan government in exile held an official ceremony on Sunday to celebrate the 34th anniversary of the conferment of the Nobel Peace Prize on the Dalai Lama.

Hundreds of Tibetans gathered at the main Buddhist temple, Tsughlakhang, in Dharamshala to celebrate the occasion.
CTA president Pempa Tsering and the speaker of the Tibetan parliament-in-exile read the official statements of the Kashag and the parliament. Artists from the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts presented a number of cultural activities.

While addressing the gathering, CTA president Pempa Tsering said, “On this special occasion of the 34th anniversary of the conferment of the Nobel Peace Prize to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Kashag offer its deepest gratitude and reverence to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The Kashag also wish to extend its warm welcome to the dignitaries and guests who are present with us on this momentous occasion. We would also like to convey our hearty greetings to all the diaspora Tibetan communities and in particular the Tibetans inside Tibet.”
He further said, “Last month, the People’s Republic of China’s government released its white paper titled “CPC Policies on the Governance of Xizang in the New Era: Approach and Achievements”. It claims that “the social and economic progress of Xizang epitomizes the nation’s outstanding achievements in development, created on the roof of the world through the Chinese path to modernization”.
He called on the Chinese government to end its “blatant violation” of the law on regional national autonomy guaranteed in the Chinese constitution and stop implementing policies aimed at the extermination of the Tibetan identity.

Pempa Tsering said, “We call upon the Chinese Communist Party to immediately end its blatant violation of the Law on Regional National Autonomy guaranteed in the Chinese Constitution and cease policies and programs aimed at extermination of the Tibetan identity.”
He added, “If the Chinese government does not put an end to these policies, it will cause irreparable wounds in the hearts and minds of the Tibetan people that will impact the harmonious relationship between the Tibetan and Chinese peoples as neighbours since ancient times. Being a signatory to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide adopted by the United Nations 75 years ago on 9 October 1948, the CCP should be held accountable for violating the terms of this international law.”

He expressed hope that peace prevails around the world and everyone enjoys freedom and human rights across humanity. He further said, “We pray for the long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama so that He can spend the rest of his life for the promotion of world peace and moral values. May truth and the non-violent cause of Tibet prevail.”
In an interview with ANI, Tenzin Jigdel, Member of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, said that they have gathered to commemorate the conferment of the Nobel Peace Prize to the 14th Dalai Lama. He said that Dalai Lama’s mesage of peace and non-violence is “important and necessary” amid the multiple crises happening across the world.
He said, “Today we are all gathered here to commemorate the 34th anniversary of being awarded a Nobel Peace Prize to His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama. This is a very special occasion for all the Tibetans around the world including inside Tibet and as we are all aware and this day and age we are seeing a lot of conflicts and chaos happening all around the world and particularly we’re seeing multiple crisis which is now known as Holy Crisis and in this day, His Holiness message of peace and non-violence is more than ever important and necessary and His Holiness resonates peace and non-violence. Therefore, we are here to celebrate this important occasion and also to amplify the message of peace and nonviolence of His Holiness. The 14th Dala Lama.”
He called on the international community to hold China accountable, particularly for the level of suppression that is being witnessed in Tibet.
Speaking about Human Rights Day, Tenzin Jigdel said, “It is Human Rights Day of course and Human Rights Day. It’s something that is being celebrated all around the world and as we are aware, the kind of level of suppression we are seeing inside Tibet and China attempt to eradicate the very existence of Tibet and the Tibetan identity is something that we wanted to spread through this medium.”

He further said, “We call upon all the governments to come together and to hold China accountable, especially the level of suppression we are seeing inside Tibet and it it’s repression that is being extended beyond its border. We just now become transnational and therefore we call upon everyone to come together and hold China accountable.”
Meanwhile, Dolma Tsering, Deputy speaker of Tibetan Parliament in-exile, said, “Today is the 34th conferment of Nobel Peace Prize to His Holiness The Dalai Lama. It is the day when the peace initiative of His Holiness and the Tibetan people are being acknowledged by the world.”
“And so this is also a time when we, as disciple of His Holiness, need to contemplate on whether we are going on the path of his non-violence and compassionate way of dealing both in our thought, in our deeds and in our action also,” she told ANI.

She said that Tibetan people are adamant that they are going to show the path of compassion and dialogue to the world despite China’s “torment policies” in Tibet. Asked about her message to China, She said, “It’s for China to know that no matter how torment their policies they are applying in Tibet, Tibetan people are adamant that they are going to show the path of compassion and dialogue to the world.” (ANI)

Canada remembers Kanishka bombing victims on 36th anniversary

The terror attack that took place on June 23, 1985 claimed 329 lives including 268 Canadian citizens, 27 British citizens and 24 Indian citizens…reports Asian Lite News

Kin of the victims of the 1985 mid-air bombing of Air India flight 182, named Kanishka, marked the 36th anniversary of the worst terror attack in Canada’s history with visits to memorials and through online events on Wednesday.

On June 23, 1985, Air India’s Boeing aircraft was heading from Montreal to London when it exploded at around 31,000 feet off the Irish coast as a bomb planted inside the plane by Khalistani terrorists went off. The terror attack claimed 329 lives including 268 Canadian citizens, 27 British citizens and 24 Indian citizens

The terror attack is recognised in Canada as a National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the “despicable act of terror remains the deadliest terrorist attack in Canada’s history. Sadly, it was not the last time Canada had to confront the malice of terrorism”.

Meanwhile, Indian High Commissioner to Canada, Ajay Bisaria said, “This terrible incident revealed to the world the heavy cost that Khalistani terrorism could inflict on humanity. Today, I join the families of the victims and share their deep sorrow and pain as we pay homage to their memory. The terrorist bombing of the Air India flight remains the worst terrorist attack on Canada and the worst aviation disaster after 9/11. The majority of the victims were Canadians and the bombing was a result of a conspiracy conceived, planned and executed in Canada. This was principally a Canadian tragedy. But it was also a British tragedy an American tragedy and Indian tragedy… A global tragedy. No religion, faith or cause can justify such violence. Our most enduring tribute to the victims will be rededicating ourselves in fighting and eliminating terrorism and militancy with strong determination and joint action.”

Sri Lanka observes anniversary of Easter bombings

The bombings carried out by extremist groups targeted three churches during Easter Sunday services in 2019. Three luxury hotels were also hit in simultaneous attacks on April 21…reports Asian Lite News

Sri Lanka on Wednesday marked the second anniversary of the Easter Sunday bombings with religious ceremonies, as Catholics called for investigations into the attacks to be expedited.

The bombings carried out by extremist groups targeted three churches during Easter Sunday services in 2019. Three luxury hotels were also hit in simultaneous attacks on April 21, DPA reported.

Catholic churches conducted prayer services after two minutes of silence in remembrance of the 271 people killed in the multiple explosions. Other religious groups held similar events.

A multi-religious remembrance service attended by Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim clergy and diplomats was held at the St Anthony’s Catholic shrine in the capital Colombo – one of the targets of the suicide bombings.

Heavy security was placed outside churches in Colombo and surrounding areas where the main services were conducted.

Silent protests were held outside churches in some locations demanding speedy investigations into the attacks.

“We are not happy about the investigations,” head of the Catholic church in Sri Lanka, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said, adding that the people need answers about who was responsible and the truth about the motives behind the attacks.

A presidential commission appointed to probe the attacks has concluded its investigation, but Ranjith has claimed that the report fails to fully identify those responsible for the bombings, though it pointed to Islamic extremists groups as the perpetrators.

The commission found former president Maithripala Sirisena responsible for security lapses as he failed to take action on advance warnings about the possible attacks.
