Dubai gears up to host ATM 2024

The upcoming edition of Arabian Travel Market (ATM), a premier global event in travel and tourism, will serve as a pivotal gathering for hospitality stakeholders from 6th to 9th May at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

According to data from Deloitte, Dubai is leading the regional hospitality markets with a strong outlook for 2024. The city now offers more hotel rooms than major capitals such as London, New York City and Bangkok, and as of this month, Dubai has a hotel room capacity of over 150,000.

Data from the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) showed that the city welcomed 17.15 million overnight visitors during 2023, with the average length of stay also increasing. According to Deloitte, occupancy peaked at 88% in February.

“As the hospitality landscape in the GCC region continues to evolve, the data paints a compelling picture of growth and opportunity. ATM 2024 will feature a wide range of hospitality brands from around the world, and we are pleased to report that there has been a 21% increase in exhibition space dedicated to hotel brands this year, demonstrating strong interest and demand,” said Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market.

More than 100 of the world’s leading travel technology companies will be exhibiting at Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2024.

ATM 2024’s sold-out Travel Tech space will be 56% bigger than last year with 33% more exhibitors participating this year, thanks to unprecedented demand from companies looking to showcase their innovations in front of a global audience.

Sponsored by Sabre, the ATM Future Stage – formerly known as the Travel Tech Stage – will host over a hundred expert speakers from across the global travel and tourism industry, plus a diverse selection of cutting-edge innovations designed to improve efficiency and profitability within the sector. Delegates will explore how advanced tech can be leveraged to drive improvements across a range of segments, including payment, professional development, accessibility, sustainability and more.

Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market, said: “My colleagues and I are delighted to introduce the ATM Future Stage, which will harness the ever-increasing levels of innovation our industry is witnessing while building on the long-standing success of our Travel Tech offering.”

The global travel technology market was valued at $9.4 billion in 2022 and is projected to reach $21 billion by 2032, according to Allied Market Research. The ATM Future Stage will host a selection of presentations and sessions designed to highlight opportunities within this space.

These include; Navigating the Future: A Futurist’s Prediction, Strategic Capabilities and Implications of AI within Business, Putting the Traveller First with AI and Unlocking the Value of Travel: Harnessing Technology for Enhanced Traveler Journeys, which will be held in association with Amadeus.

This year’s show will see the return of the ATM Start-up Pitch Battle, which will be held in association with Intelak. The third edition of the competition will see a number of the region’s most promising startups take to the Future Stage to showcase a range of innovative and potentially industry-changing solutions in front of expert judges.

Several Travel Tech exhibitors also plan to get involved in other areas of ATM 2024. Tech giant Huawei, for instance, will sponsor this year’s Capitalising on China’s Predicted Tourism Surge summit on the ATM Global Stage.

“With an exciting combination of ambitious startups and well-established brands, this year’s Travel Tech space is perfectly aligned with ATM 2024’s theme, ‘Empowering Innovation: Transforming Travel Through Entrepreneurship’,” added Curtis.

ATM 2024 will also feature a ‘Best Use of Technology’ award at its annual exhibitor awards for the first time. Exhibitors will be evaluated on how and to what extent they have embraced and deployed technology on their stands.

In line with its theme, ‘Empowering Innovation: Transforming Travel Through Entrepreneurship’, the 31st edition of ATM will once again host policymakers, industry leaders and travel professionals from across the Middle East and beyond, encouraging them to forge new relationships, exchange knowledge and identify innovations that can reshape the future of global travel and tourism. From startups to established brands, the upcoming show will highlight how innovators enhance customer experiences, drive efficiencies, and accelerate progress towards a net-zero future for the industry.

More than 40,000 travel trade professionals, including 30,000 visitors, attended the 30th edition of ATM in May 2023, setting a new show record. The exhibition attracted more than 2,100 exhibitors and representatives from over 155 countries, providing a global platform for the unveiling of ATM’s net-zero pledge.

Jordan leverages Arab Travel Market to boost tourism industry

Dr. Abed Al Razzaq Arabiyat, Managing Director of the Jordan Tourism Board, highlighted his country’s keenness to become a key part of the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2023 by participating through the board’s pavilion featuring tourism offices, travel agencies and tourism services providers.

Stressing that the exhibition is a vital platform for promoting tourism in Jordan, he stated, “We look forward to the market in the UAE, a promising market for Jordan, which is in turn considered a leading tourism destination for Emirati and Gulf families, especially during the summer and holiday seasons, in addition to medical tourism, adventure tourism and others.”

He also noted that Jordanian tourism products complement the UAE’s tourism products.

In a statement to Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of the board’s participation in ATM 2023, which is currently being held at the Dubai World Trade Centre, Arabiyat said that the board had implemented an intensive tourism marketing campaign for Jordan, starting in Dubai. It is currently showcasing its new tourism services and experiences through this leading tourism exhibition in the Middle East.

He also affirmed the importance of the board’s reputation among Gulf and Arab people, who represent 50 percent of total tourists coming to Jordan. He pointed out that the Jordan Tourism Board has signed a cooperation agreement with the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism to market Jordan and Abu Dhabi as joint tourist destinations.

Meetings were also held with airlines, such as Etihad Airways, Emirates and flydubai, to implement joint marketing programmes and activities to attract tourists from distant countries, such as Japan, South Korea and China, to spend several days in the UAE and then move on to Jordan as joint tourist destinations, since Emirati airlines connect these countries and have direct routes to and from Jordan, he noted. The Jordan Tourism Board has previously signed a similar agreement with Emirates and is keen to enhance its cooperation with Air Arabia, which has offices in Jordan and operates seven weekly flights connecting Abu Dhabi to the capital, Amman, and efforts are being made to increase these flights for joint marketing.

Tourism indexes in Jordan during the first quarter of this year were very positive, with a growth rate of 88 percent compared to the same period last year, with a 30 percent increase compared to 2019, Arabiyat explained. Tourism revenues in Jordan during the first quarter totalled US$1.7 billion. He expects an increase in the number of visitors to Jordan, especially to Petra, by 1.5 million visitors by the end of this year.

He attributed this increase to the success of marketing and promotional campaigns launched in several Arab and European countries while expressing optimism about attracting high numbers of visitors and generating more tourism revenue.

“The leading tourism experience in Jordan is the Jordan Trail, which extends over a distance of 700 kilometres and passes through 75 villages varying in terms of terrain, climate and landscape, from forests in the north to the Dead Sea, the largest natural resort in the world. In addition to the tourist destinations of Wadi Rum, Petra and Aqaba, which are famous for diving, water sports and other local tourism experiences, such as spending a whole day in the Jordanian countryside, motorcycle tourism also attracts large Gulf groups throughout the year,” Arabiyat said in conclusion.

ATM 2023: Sustainability takes centre stage at Sharjah’s exhibit

The pavilion displayed a variety of eco-tourism options, as well as cultural, sports, adventure and many other tourism destinations that reflect the emirate’s rich cultural, historical, environmental, social, and economic diversity and abundance.

The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) has unveiled “Rehlati,” a unique training programme in the emirate aimed at equipping tour guides with the necessary skills to offer comprehensive services in the tourism sector.

The first-of-its-kind programme, announced during the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2023 held at the Dubai World Trade Centre from 1-4 May, seeks to build a proficient workforce to enhance the tourism experience in Sharjah.

The new initiative comprises four specialised training programmes, including “Explore the Desert with Rehlati” in collaboration with Mleiha Archaeological Centre, :Explore Nature with Rehlati” in collaboration with Sharjah’s Environment and Protected Areas Authority, “Explore Heritage with Rehlati” in collaboration with Sharjah Institute for Heritage, and “Explore History with Rehlati” in collaboration with Sharjah Museums Authority.

SCTDA is overseeing the emirate’s pavilion at ATM 2023, and turning the spotlight on the offerings of 20 government and private entities from the tourism, travel, and hospitality sectors. The pavilion aims to showcase Sharjah’s competitive and innovative edge, along with its diverse tourism destinations, while also creating opportunities for collaboration with other global tourism destinations.

Visitors and participants are showing a great deal of interest in the Sharjah pavilion, which provided a close-up view of the emirate’s tourism sector and its leadership in sustainable tourism. The pavilion displayed a variety of eco-tourism options, as well as cultural, sports, adventure and many other tourism destinations that reflect the emirate’s rich cultural, historical, environmental, social, and economic diversity and abundance.

In addition, the pavilion highlighted the various government entities’ efforts to achieve digital transformation, integrate technology into the tourism sector, and promote sustainability, in line with the ATM 2023 theme “Working Towards Net Zero” and the UAE’s “Year of Sustainability.” These efforts reflect the commitment of Sharjah towards sustainable development and its dedication to preserving the environment for future generations.

This year’s Sharjah pavilion at ATM stands out for its interactive tours that offer visitors a real-life experience of the emirate’s unique destinations. The pavilion features the “MetaVerse,” a world-exclusive to Sharjah, and 360° Augmented Reality technology that allows visitors to navigate through the corridors of the Sharjah Classic Cars Museum. Additionally, the pavilion showcases Sharjah museums experience and Sharjah Formula 1 high-speed team boats to promote the “Sharjah World Championship Week,” one of the most exciting and distinguished water sports events in the emirate and the region. The pavilion also includes a virtual sports experience with a kayak simulator, offering visitors a chance to explore Sharjah’s various water and sea destinations.

Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman of SCTDA, said, “Over the course of 15 years, the Authority has been instrumental in bolstering Sharjah’s leading position on the world tourism stage, particularly in terms of sustainable tourism practices, in line with the vision and directives of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, which aims to achieve comprehensive sustainability. SCTDA has undertaken projects and initiatives that directly and indirectly support crucial sectors vital to the national economy and prioritises sustainability and green economy.

He added, “Investing in human capital is a key aspect of our strategy for sustainable tourism development and the launch of the first-of-its-kind ‘Rehlati’ programme in Sharjah, is a key step in this direction. This initiative aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of our national workforce in several key aspects related to the industry, such as heritage, nature, environment, desert, history, and more.”

“We firmly believe in our ability to foster the growth of the sector by prioritising people and empowering them to further develop their skills, as evidenced by the launch of this programme. Such initiatives inspire us to continue driving the growth of the tourism sector, which has recorded an impressive 28% growth compared to 2021.” Al Midfa noted.

Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2023 is ready to welcome the global travel, tourism and hospitality community to the UAE from Monday, 1st, to Thursday 4th, May. The 30th edition of the show will host over 2,000 exhibitors, representatives from more than 150 countries and an anticipated 34,000 attendees.

Taking place at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) in collaboration with the emirate’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), this year’s conference will once again form a central component of the UAE’s annual Arabian Travel Week.

In line with its theme, ‘Working Towards Net Zero’, ATM 2023 will provide a forum in which participants can forge new connections, share knowledge and showcase innovations with the potential to expedite the global travel sector’s journey towards decarbonisation.

Vasyl Zhygalo, Managing Director of RX Middle East and Portfolio Director of WTM, IBTM and RX, said: “Following the very successful WTM Africa and WTM Latin America earlier this spring it is great to now see the international travel community engage with Arabian Travel Market. We’ve seen a robust increase in exhibitor growth across all show areas and it’s exciting to be able to welcome back our Chinese colleagues after remaining covid restrictions were lifted in the region.”

Exhibitor participation in ATM 2023 has risen by 27% compared to last year’s event, with growth registered across all show sectors. These include regional upticks for the Middle East, representation for which will be 24% larger than in 2022, Europe (17% larger), Asia (15% larger) and Africa (8.5% larger). The event’s Travel Tech and hotels sectors have also witnessed sizeable year-on-year growth, expanding by 62% and 37.5%, respectively.

Chinese exhibitors and travel professionals are making a welcome return to ATM 2023, after the country lifted its Covid-related travel restrictions earlier this year. China became the world’s top source market in 2019, with 155 million tourists spending more than $250 billion overseas, and CNN predicts the nation’s outbound market will recover to around six million travellers per month by the summer of 2023.

Southeast Asia and India will feature prominently at this year’s event too. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Indian nationals spent a record $10 billion on overseas travel during the first nine months of 2022, an increase of nearly 43% compared to pre-Covid figures. Other estimates indicate the number of annual outbound journeys will reach more than 27 million by 2024, with a total value of over $42 billion.

Saudi Arabia will have a considerable presence at ATM 2023. The Kingdom registered more international arrivals than any other Arab nation during the first nine months of last year, welcoming more than 18 million visitors during this period, according to government data. Tourism spending in KSA hit $7.2bn in H1 2022.

To mark its 30th edition, ATM will be unveiling a dedicated sustainability pledge that has been designed to reinforce RX’s commitment to the delivery of sustainable events through the use of environmentally friendly materials, the elimination of single-use plastics and other forward-thinking initiatives. In addition to setting out the show’s journey towards net zero, this pledge will be accompanied by a new playbook, which offers participants a framework within which to mitigate their environmental impact before, during and after the event.

Issam Kazim, CEO, Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, commented: “It is indeed fitting that this year’s ATM theme focusses on sustainability to build a better future for tourism. This year’s show will also feature the inaugural ‘ATM Sustainable Stand Award’, the results of which will be announced as part of the ATM 2023 Best Stand Awards. Entries will be judged according to an extensive range of sustainable criteria, including supplier choice, material usage, operational efficiency, and even what will happen to stands once the exhibition has concluded.

In addition to sustainability, the ATM Global Stage will host a variety of sessions focused on pivotal industry issues, including, but not limited to: hotels and hospitality; aviation and transport; meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE); business travel; investment; responsible tourism; workforce diversification; and emerging segments such as attractions, cruises, wellness and cultural tourism.

The upcoming edition will see the return of the ATM Travel Tech Stage, which will host discussions on how factors such as artificial intelligence, the metaverse, cryptocurrency and big data are impacting the travel sector, while showcasing cutting-edge innovations and solutions with the potential to drive the next generation of sustainable tourism.

ATM 2023 will also feature a Sustainability Hub for the first time in the show’s history. This space will offer a venue for sessions dedicated to the latest sustainable travel trends and innovations, while providing the backdrop for the ATM 2023 Start-up Competition – an event hosted by conference partner Plug and Play, which will see entrepreneurs go head-to-head in a ‘Sustainable Tech Pitch Battle’.

This year’s show will see the return of International Luxury Travel Market (ILTM) Arabia, which will explore trends and opportunities within the burgeoning field of high-end tourism. In terms of luxury travel priorities, 25% of those living in the UAE are looking for great entertainment, whereas 19% place the biggest emphasis on premium-quality accommodation when booking trips, according to market research published by YouGov.

There will also be sessions from the International Tourism & Investment Conference (ITIC), the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) and the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA).

With a wide array of other must-attend events on the agenda, including sessions focused on the key markets of India, China and the GCC, plus a new informal speed networking platform, ATM 2023 will offer something to suit every specialism and interest, not to mention unparalleled networking and knowledge-sharing opportunities.

18 Indian entities participating in Arabian Travel Market 2022

Having reopened India for tourism after three waves of COVID-19, the government and the private sector tourism industry are concentrating on the Gulf region to forge new two-way collaborations in hospitality and leisure travel.

The latest initiative in this sector is India’s participation in the Arabian Travel Market 2022 in Dubai, the region’s largest travel and tourism exhibition.

Eighteen participants from India representing the state tourism establishments of Kerala, Nagaland, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka provinces are participating in the four-day event in Dubai. In addition, tour operators, travel agents, hoteliers and resort owners are present in the India Pavilion of the Arabian Travel Market 2022, showcasing their diverse tourism products and services.

Rupinder Brar, Additional Director-General of India’s Ministry of Tourism, said that the participation in the Arabian Travel Market is part of her country’s “holistic promotion of Indian tourism in the Middle East. A large number of tourists from the Middle East visit India for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE), medical, wellness and luxury tourism,” she said, according to a readout by the Ministry of Tourism of the activities at the Indian Pavilion.

The Pavilion was inaugurated jointly by Satpal Maharaj, Minister of Tourism in Uttarakhand state, Dr. Aman Puri, Consul General of India in Dubai, and Rupinder Brar.

“The Indian tourism outlook is very promising with an upward trend in foreign tourist arrivals barring the period of COVID-19 pandemic since March 2020,” the readout said. “As the situation is getting steadily normalized, the Gulf and the Middle East region is one of the most important markets for India.”

India’s foray into the Dubai exhibition comes close on the heels of “Incredible India Reconnect 2022,” a virtual roadshow in Oman.

The Ministry of Tourism said, “As India opens its borders post-pandemic, we are organising a series of virtual roadshows along with Indian Missions in the Middle East as a means to reconnect with existing partners and explore new ties and opportunities.”

“The first Incredible India Reconnect event in the Gulf signals the start of efforts between the government and the market to encourage bilateral tourism by recognising the issues, challenges, and opportunities to strengthen and build momentum on two-way growth phase,” the Ministry said.
