Saudha presents violinist Kala Ramnath showcasing Frida Kahlo works at Royal Albert Hall

With new light on Frida Kahlo works, Saudha Society of Poetry and Indian Music, brings at Royal Albert Hall a unqiue musical and poetic colaboration…Rahul Laud reports

On Wednesday 13 July 2022 at 7.30pm a reinterpretation of Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo’s melancholic universe of art will be brought to new shade of light through breath-taking presentation of Indian classical music at the Royal Albert Hall .

Saudha Society of Poetry and Indian Music, (www.saudha.org) will present an art-initiative live in partnership with Royal Albert Hall.

Directed by poet Ahmed Kaysher, this visceral presentation, will feature the world’s finest Hindustani classical violinist Vidushi Kala Ramnath joining from USA, leading Tabla maestro Pt Sanju Sahai, the finest British-Bengali singer of this generation Shapla Salique, an acclaimed spoken-word artist Shree Ganguly,  an award-winning filmmaker Makbul Chowdhury (digital content) and poet Shamim Shahan is on the back-stage management.

The director Ahmed Kaysher said “This is a landmark and absolutely unique fusion of two different art forms. Indian classical music, with its absolute versatility, never attempted to explore and interpret the intensity of human emotions of other subtle art forms like painting, specially Frida’s works that have an ocean of dramatic and transcendental elements, which off-course, what Indian classical music keenly delves into. “

Kaysher said ” As a firm believer of exploring different arts through interpretation, re-interpretation, construction, de-construction and reconstruction – the horizon that Jack Derrida introduced to arts and literature, Saudha, has been re-interpreting different arts of the globe with other art forms for last 13 years e.g. Bach’s Goldberg variation through Raag Chayanat; Eliot’s Waste Land in the light of Nazrul’s Bidrohi ( As part of the centenary celebration of the Waste land); intensifying the meaning and the mood of Indian classical music with the presentation of haunting verses of poetry from Lorca, Neruda, Cavafy, Tagore, Rumi etc, as well as rendering visual interpretation through dance and other visual arts.”

He continued “These historic fusions of arts and music have been staged nationwide and at prestigious venues like Southbank centre, Royal Albert Hall, the House of Commons, Edinburgh Festival etc, and we managed to create a fresh flow of new audiences and followers in the last 13 years. I am also working on transcending the subtlety of Indian classical music through mingling this with Javanese classical set of Gamelan and off-course, medieval music of India called Vaishnav through early European music e.g. Troubadour. We are planning to do a world tour next year with these two unique art-initiatives.”

Hindustani violinist Vidushi Kala Ramnath said “It’s an immense privilege to contribute to this amazing concert. It’s always a pleasure working for Saudha, a leading Indian classical and global music promoter in the UK and to be back at the Royal Albert Hall after a good few years.”

The door opens at 7pm and the concert starts at 7.30pm at the Elgar Room of the Royal Albert Hall.

‘The Paradox of Opposites’

Inspired by the temples of the south Indian city of Tiruchengode, the UK based vocalist composer Supriya created ‘The Paradox of Opposites’, writes Prof. Geetha Upadhyaya

The negative aura of the past 2 years has paradoxically inspired artists to rekindle positivity. One such interesting creative venture was ‘The Paradox of Opposites’ for the label ‘Come Play with Me’ whose special compilation featured artists of colour and marginalised genders.

‘The Paradox of Opposites’ is a seamless blending of haunting vocals of classical south Indian music (Carnatic Music) by Supriya Nagarajan, the gentle bass flute of Karin De Fleyt and the stirring Finnish Kantale of Satu Maria Sopanen, all recorded online, deftly mastered and mixed by Duncan Chapman.

Inspired by the temples of the south Indian city of Tiruchengode, the UK based vocalist composer Supriya created ‘The Paradox of Opposites’. Tiruchengode, the home of Lord Ardhanarieshwar is the exclusive male-female form of Lord Shiva and His consort Goddess Parvati symbolising the unity of opposites, the filius solis et lunae.

This single based on the famous composer Muthuswami Dikshithar’s verses on Ardhanarishwar in a rare minor scale of Kumudakriya, begins with Duncan Chapman’s soundscape ushering the fluttering seagulls on the waves of Sopanen’s Kantele, while Supriya’s soulful voice guided by De Fleyt’s magical flute weaves a meditative obeisance to the presiding deity of Tiruchengode.

This single was released on all platforms on 11 June 2021.

‘My Encounters with the Classical Cultures of East and West’

I saw “Music Room” in June 1965 with other world cinema classics. The film had an electrifying effect on me for I had never seen or heard Indian classical music before this was a revelation for me … writes Dilip Roy

“Do not lose your reverence for the past; it is on the past that you plant your foot firmly, if you wish to mount high in the future.”

Bankimchandra Chatterjee (1838 – 1894)

I was inducted into the classical cultures of East and West by two twentieth-century cultural giants of India namely Satyajit Ray and Zubin Mehta both of whom I have met personally. It was Satyajit Ray’s 1957 Bengali film Jalsaghar (The Music Room) as the title suggests the story revolves around classical music which used to be a passion for Zamindars (Landlords) of India as patrons, they used to host concerts by inviting famous musicians in their palaces and the people who attend these soirees would be well versed in the appreciation of classical music.

I saw “Music Room” in June 1965 with other world cinema classics. The film had an electrifying effect on me for I had never seen or heard Indian classical music before this was a revelation for me. Here was a cinema which had all the hallmarks of a powerful story combined with the best of classical music performed by some of the finest ensemble artists of India of such repute as Vilayat Khan, Bhismilla Khan, vocalists Begum Akhtar and Waheed Khan and dancer Roshan Kumari a well known Kathak exponent of India which was the highlight of the film. Since then this movie has become my all time favourite. Jalsaghar ran for full eight months in a Paris cinema Satyajit Ray told me personally when we last met.

The effect of Jalsaghar was so great that Indian classical music became a passion. I started collecting both vocal as well as instrumental records soon I had substantial numbers of vinyl collection. I also became a member of Indian cultural institute based in West London where I managed to see the performances of most of the veteran artists of India some are not even alive today. All this I would attribute to Satyajit Ray who himself was well versed in classical music. Ray also became my mentor as I was venturing into the world of cinema as a career. As far as Western classical music is concerned, it is maestro Zubin Mehta who is responsible for drawing my attention to it. like Ray, Mehta is the only world renowned Indian artist in the European classical world as conductor. It was the year 1990 when concert called TheThreeTenors was being broadcast on television live from Rome with world renowned singers. I watched with great pride and later I discovered that he is the most sought after conductor in the world today. Naturally, I started collecting DVD and vinyl records of Mehta and now I have excellent Mehta collection in my library.

Besides he is also responsible for opening up my eyes to the greatest European composers such as Beethoven, Mahler,  Mozart, Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner. It was a famous opera of Wagner called Tannhauser and Mehta as a conductor was being broadcast on television live from Munich in 1994 which I watched with great enthusiasm. Since then I discovered that Richard Wagner (1813-1883) was a unique 19th-century personality like most German contemporaries of his time were inspired by India’s classical literature and philosophy. He was a writer of prose works, composer, librettist and a philosopher and remains unmatched to date, a  supreme European artist the world has ever produced. Richard  Wagner is the Grandfather of European classical music says Maestro Zubin Mehta whose influence on other composers who came after him have been profound.  I have now a complete recording of Wagner operas and prose works in my collection and have become one of the greatest admirers of Richard Wagner. I also became a member of Wagner Society of London in 2010 and managed to get three articles published in the societies quarterly journal and between 2020-21 my articles on Wagner were published by Australia, New Zealand and Scotland Wagner societies respectively. I also managed to see Wagner’s other operas at London’s Royal Opera House.
