Sabyasachi Unveils ‘Namaste Mickey’ Artwork

India’s leading fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has unveiled an art piece that pays tribute to the iconic and beloved Mickey Mouse, as part of Create 100.

Create 100 is a global celebration of creativity marking 100 years of Disney storytelling. Inspired by their personal connection to stories and characters across Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and 20th Century, Create 100 sees some of the world’s most renowned creative visionaries and next-generation talent across fashion, music, art and more who donating artworks, items, and experiences to benefit Make-A-Wish®.

Mukherjee is celebrated for his distinctly modern take on traditional Indian clothing. The ace Indian fashion designer from Calcutta joins a collective of some of the world’s most esteemed creative legends who are coming together to benefit Make-A-Wish®.

Here is a look at the creator and the story behind his artwork:

Namaste Mickey

‘Namaste Mickey’ is conceptualised by Mukherjee and hand painted by the Sabyasachi Art Foundation. The painting is made using earth colours in Tempera and digitally transferred onto handwoven cotton and embroidered using multi-media techniques. It’s appliqued and collaged with hand-embroidered textiles and metal detailing from the ateliers of Sabyasachi. The artwork is framed with embroidered textiles on hard oak wood.

Said Sabyasachi, “I was born in 1974, a time devoid of the internet where television was the sole medium of entertainment. I used to eagerly rush home to catch episodes of Disney’s Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. It fills me with immense excitement to be part of Create 100, representing India alongside so many talented creators. I’m so happy to be collaborating with Disney which has brought boundless joy to audiences worldwide for a century.”

Speaking about the inspiration behind his artwork, he added, “My creation, known as ‘Namaste Mickey,’ draws inspiration from India’s rich tapestry of traditional and miniature paintings. Crafted by the Sabyasachi Art Foundation, it begins with a digital print on handmade canvas, then adorned with the age-old, intricate embroidery techniques of India. This has resulted in a contemporary collector’s piece. In the artwork, Mickey Mouse dons traditional Indian attire and jewellery, set against the backdrop of the iconic Taj Mahal, surrounded by India’s captivating flora and fauna. This rendition weaves together the mystique of both East and West, creating a truly magical interpretation of the most beloved character, Mickey Mouse.

“As I represent India, I want to take the opportunity to encourage everyone in the creative industry to continue to inspire and be inspired, and be part of positive changes around the world.”

“For over two decades now, I’ve strived to celebrate the best of Indian crafts across the world. It’s an honour to launch my latest high jewellery collection at London’s iconic Lancaster House. I am very grateful to Ruth Ganesh and the Elephant Family, and to my wonderful hosts Elizabeth Ashcombe, Marina Windsor, Annabel Eliott, Shalni Arora and Ayesha Shand for making this happen. The Elephant Family and I are committed to similar but different missions. While I aim to preserve endangered heritage crafts, they conserve endangered animals and habitats. It’s my privilege and honour to be a part of their cause,” says Sabyasachi Mukherjee.

Sabyasachi announced the launch of a new jewellery collection, The Animal Ball Edition from Sabyasachi High Jewellery, with an exhibition on the 27th of June, the eve of the Animal Ball by the Elephant Family, at London’s Lancaster House. The collection is an homage to the endangered, that carries forward the brand’s commitment to heritage, legacy craftsmanship and quality.

The Animal Ball edition from Sabyasachi High Jewellery is made using centuries-old Indian jewellery-making crafts that include Meena, hand-enamelling on gold; Pohai, hand stringing and weaving precious stones and pearls using salma, silk thread; Jadau, the painstaking art of hand moulding and setting precious stones into gold. Flora and fauna insignia have been sculpted by the Sabyasachi Art Foundation and moulded in gold with hand-engraved details. The back of these statement pieces are crafted with brand motifs in intricate flat filigree work studded with diamonds, a signature of Bengal’s jewellery craftsmanship. Featuring coloured gemstones that include Zambian emeralds, Brazilian amethysts, Madagascan tourmalines with EF VVS VS diamonds—this collection is a coming together of ancient wisdom with precision, skill and the perspective of design.

“Crowded narrow lanes with balconies jutting out of beautiful old mansions and homes, jostling for space in North Calcutta. So rich in its nonchalance, between the clamour of grandeur and decay. It’s almost spiritual, the neglect of luxury and the casual existence of glamour. It makes Calcutta unforgettable,” says Sabyasachi Mukherjee.

Sabyasachi’s inaugural jewellery flagship store in Hyderabad, is an homage to craftsmanship, heritage and the spirit of Calcutta. An intimate parlour of exquisite jewels, the store is framed with original art made by The Sabyasachi Art Foundation-inspired by Persian Qajars, Mughal botanicals and miniatures, and Company paintings found in the grand old homes and palaces of Calcutta. The modernist interpretations are interspersed with hand crafted Pichhwais, and vintage handwoven and crafted textiles from across India-including Mughal hand embroidered zardosi caps and a late 18th century hand stitched velvet choli in embroidered zardosi, complete with a hidden pocket.

Dutch pottery, age-old ceramics and leather bound books peek through Lladro figurines of Indian goddesses. Even as the floors are marked with hand knotted and woven carpets and kilims, the wallpaper and upholstery are part of the Sabyasachi for Nilaya collection, presenting the various house motifs and hallmarks. While the house’s signature block printed velvet lined vitrines and busts that are laced with the finest of necklaces, rings, earrings and head gear.

Sabyasachi’s vision for the retail experience remains consistent across the various cities, countries and stores. It’s an escape and a reminder to step away and into a timeless sense of being and the complete abandon and decadence of the joy of age-old heritage and slow luxury.

Sabyasachi was the first Indian designer to showcase his couture collection on social media, this was years before the pandemic. Since then, the designer continues to do so each time he releases a new line of clothing, accessories or jewellery, avoiding a physical showcase at any fashion event in the country. This season, North Calcutta’s crumbling grand mansions, venetian chandeliers, and tarnished silverware played muse and backdrop for the designer’s couture showing launched on the 14th of the month. The collection and the showcase featured an intense integrity beneath the patina of age bit in design and style.

Strong, sophisticated, and self-assured. A brooding silver, dusty gold, and withering grey hand-dyed colour palette. Layering silk, wool, velvet, and tulle creates a textured depth. Handcrafted old-world zardozi, printed vintage florals, and artisanal embroidery add drama. Sabyasachi’s Couture 2022 honours the timeless elegance of nonchalant glamour.

“Fading sunlight through dusty chandeliers-the old palaces of Calcutta are mesmerising. Smoky colours with glints of gold and silver that carries the veneer of the timeless.”

“The old homes of North Calcutta might be decrepit and crumbling. But as you walk through its narrow and overcrowded alleyways, they stand with an inherent dignity through their battle with time. Maybe it’s the sobriety of experience or the wisdom of the ages-but they remain silently imposing and mysteriously beautiful,” states. the artiste.
