Five conditions Taliban must apply to gain legitimacy

The United States has listed five key conditions that the regime in Kabul must fulfil, if it wants to gain legitimacy from the international community…reports Asian Lite News

Insisting that the world remains united in its expectations from the Taliban, the United States has listed five key conditions that the regime in Kabul must fulfil, if it wants to gain legitimacy from the international community.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday night detailed in a virtual G20 meeting on Afghanistan what Washington needs to see from the Taliban and from any future government in Kabul.

Senior US State Department officials later said that there was a broad consensus on the points from the other members of the G20 that had participated in the meeting.

First, Blinken said that the international community must hold the Taliban to their commitment to allow foreign nationals and Afghans to travel outside the country if they wish. He said it should be a prerequisite to any meaningful engagement with the Taliban.

Second, Blinken affirmed that the Taliban should be held accountable to their commitment to prevent terrorist groups from using Afghanistan as a base for external operations that threaten other countries.

Third, the US Secretary of State said that collectively, the international community must be fierce advocates for the human rights of all the Afghan people, including women, girls, and members of minority communities. He affirmed that the Taliban must make good on their commitment not to carry out reprisal violence and to grant amnesty to all who worked for the former government or coalition forces.

Fourth, Blinken went on to say that the Taliban should be pressed on unimpeded humanitarian access. Quoting the dire assessments from the UN that nearly half of Afghanistan’s population needed humanitarian protection assistance, he said that the US remains committed to humanitarian leadership when it comes to Afghanistan.

Finally, Blinken said, the US has urged the Taliban to form an inclusive government that can meet the needs and reflect the aspirations of the Afghan people. He pointed out that the government is overwhelmingly dominated by one ethnic group, is exclusively male, and includes people who are notorious for attacks on US and coalition forces as well as civilians.

The US State Department officials have said that there’s “quite a lot of convergence” about what Washington needs to see from the Taliban.

“I don’t think anybody is satisfied with the composition of this interim government, including the Chinese. So, there was quite a bit of convergence in the room,” the official said while briefing media on the US engagements at the United Nations.

Afghanistan remains a “hot topic” in New York which, according to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin, will be discussed extensively during all contacts of the Russian delegation on the side-lines of the UN General Assembly.

“We expressed our consistent approaches to the situation in Afghanistan – normalization of the situation, the need to coordinate the international community’s approaches, the need for resolution of humanitarian problems through coordination among the international community,” Vershinin was quoted as saying by the Russian news agency Tass today.

The developments in Afghanistan, and the need to prevent the proliferation of the terrorist and drug threats throughout the region, also dominated the proceedings during the traditional meeting of the ministers for foreign affairs of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York.

Focusing on the Afghan issue, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that the permanent members of the UN Security Council bear special responsibility to the international community as a whole.

Bangladesh PM demands urgent action on Rohingya crisis

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that the international community must do everything possible to make sure the Rohingyas return to their homeland as “they themselves also wish to return to their home”…writes Sumi Khan

“Impunity for such heinous crime should not be allowed on all accounts,” she also said at a high-level interaction on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York, adding Bangladesh extended its support to the ongoing international efforts to ensure the persecutors’ accountability, particularly in the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Sheikh Hasina.

This decision, she said, was based on Bangladesh people’s own painful experience during the 1971 Liberation War and inspired by the guiding principle laid out by Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

“The very struggle of Bangladesh symbolised the universal struggle for peace and justice. It was, therefore, only natural that Bangladesh, from its very inception, should stand firmly by the side of the oppressed people of the world,” she quoted Sheikh Mujib as saying.

The virtual meeting titled “High-Level Side Event on Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (Rohingya) crisis: Imperatives for a Sustainable Solution” was held under Bangladesh auspices ahead of her scheduled UNGA address on September 24. The meeting was organised as part of Dhaka’s efforts to highlight the crisis in the main UNGA general debate, officials said.

Bangladesh organised the event co-sponsored by eight countries and organisations including the UK, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the European Union.

Sheikh Hasina said at the start of the Rohingya exodus in 2017 to evade persecution in Myanmar’s Rakhine Province bordering Bangladesh, “our choice was to save their lives or to close the border and let them face ethnic cleansing”.

“We chose to save their lives for the sake of humanity,” she told the UN members.

She has demanded intensified global action with real urgency to repatriate Rohingyas, saying major international powers inaction over the crisis shocked Bangladesh as it extended them makeshift refuge on humanitarian grounds, straining its resources.

“As I repeatedly said they (Rohingyas) are Myanmar nationals and hence, they must go back to their homeland, Myanmar, in safety and dignity,” she said.

Hasina noted that the issue was a matter of regional and global security concerns and therefore it needed urgent resolution while “I would like to emphasise that whatever we are doing in Bangladesh is purely on a temporary basis”.

Simultaneously, she put weight behind towards the campaign to expose to justice the people responsible for the persecution of the minority Rohingya community for the sake of justice and infusing a sense of confidence among the victim population in returning their home.

She said since that mass exodus in 2017, at all the successive UNGAs, she placed specific proposals for a sustainable solution to the crisis while “my government has maintained bilateral engagements with Myanmar”.

“At the regional front, we have tried to take on board the major powers, including China and India. We have all along tried to have more active involvement of the ASEAN.

“At the multilateral front, we kept the issue on the table by UN resolutions engaging important countries and the UN agencies but sadly our efforts for the hapless, uprooted Myanmar nationals returning home to Myanmar has not generated any tangible outcome yet. Till today, not a single one of them could go back to their homeland,” she said.

Sheikh Hasina said for the last four years, Bangladesh awaited with high hopes that these displaced people could go back to their own homes in their motherland Myanmar in safety, security and dignity, reposing “our trust in the global assembly and community for their repatriation”.

“Our calls have remained unheeded and our hopes unfulfilled. We are now in the fifth year of the crisis. Yet, we still hold the hope for a durable solution to this crisis,” she said, adding that this humanitarian crisis appeared a collective responsibility as its implication goes beyond borders and warned that any failure in doing so immediately would “jeopardise our collective security”.

“The growing frustration over the lack of progress in repatriation entices many to get involved in criminal activities, and they are easy prey to extremist ideologies. This could potentially destabilise the entire region,” she warned.

Hasina

She suggested a five-point international course of action with the first one being the investment of “all our efforts” as the top priority. Secondly, she said that the changed political scenario in Myanmar created uncertainty in the repatriation process, requiring a revision in international efforts. Seeking enhanced efforts of ASEAN in the current perspective, she said that she believes the ASEAN has an important responsibility when its actions would largely influence Myanmar in view of the present situation.

“Fourthly, we must remember humanitarian assistance is essential but in no way a permanent solution. The UN and the partners must undertake tangible actions and projects in Myanmar to create an environment conducive for repatriation and their sustainability,” she said. “So far, we have not seen any such progress.”

Turning to pending repatriation, she said that Bangladesh ensured all necessary arrangements to make Rohingyas temporarily stay safe and secure, despite resource and land constraints.

“The prolonged stay of such a large population in a congested area is also having serious impacts on the surrounding environment and ecology. Hills and forest lands have been cut down to provide shelters,” she said.

Even in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic challenges, “we have not forgotten to ensure the safety and welfare of the Rohingyas. We have remained faithful to our conviction that no one is safe until each one of us is safe. We have included this population in our national vaccination programme,” she said.

Gastech to power Net-Zero future

The policy makers and energy leaders examine what needs to be done to enable the pivot towards hydrogen and ensure a rapid expansion of the hydrogen economy…reports Asian Lite News

For the first time this year, a dedicated hydrogen zone, Gastech Hydrogen, has been added to Gastech, the world’s foremost gas, LNG, hydrogen, and energy event.  The conversation delivering on the global hydrogen vision to help meet decarbonisation targets and progress towards net-zero energy commitments.

Co-located with Gastech 2021, taking place at the Dubai World Trade Centre, in Dubai, the Hydrogen Zone features a series of dedicated conference sessions focused on the potential of hydrogen in creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future and for GCC hydrocarbon producers to reduce methane emissions and drive the development of the hydrogen economy.

Sri Lanka Minister

In addition to the conference sessions, taking place today and tomorrow, a high-level Ministerial Panel was held on the opening day of Gastech 2021 which focused on what more needs to be done by policymakers to ensure the rapid expansion of the hydrogen supply chain and what impact regulations will have on facilitating the pivot towards green and blue hydrogen. Ministers from leading energy markets participated in the panel.

H.E. UDAYA GAMMANPILA, SRI LANKA’S MINISTER OF ENERGY: “Whilst electrification using solar, and wind can help replace fossil fuels in the longer term, not all energy intensive applications can be readily electrified (e.g. aviation). We therefore believe hydrogen can be the fuel of the future, by tapping further into Sri Lanka’s abundant wind and solar potential. Indeed, hydrogen is likely to make Sri Lanka self-reliant in energy and possibly a net exporter.”

Today, (September 22) Hydrogen Zone attendees heard how hydrogen presents Gulf energy producers with a globally significant opportunity to remodel their business practices and lead the transition towards Net-Zero energy. Although scaling up projects, infrastructure and end user accessibility will present huge challenges, the production of both green and blue hydrogen offers a unique chance to deliver on climate commitments and drastically reduce CO2 emissions. Tomorrow (September 23), the focus of the Gastech Hydrogen Zone discussions will switch to what must happen by 2030 if hydrogen is to overcome existing barriers to wide scale adoption and achieve the vision of the hydrogen economy.

In the Gulf region, substantial natural-gas reserves are seen as an opportunity to produce hydrogen. Work is already underway on megaprojects to expand the UAE’s hydrogen economy, including a two gigawatt green ammonia project by Taqa, the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company, and Abu Dhabi Ports which will use green hydrogen as feedstock to produce liquid ammonia for use in ships as bunker fuel and for export.

ALSO READ: UAE Targets $100B Trade With India Within 5 Years

Meanwhile, the Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD) has announced plans for a $1 billion green ammonia plant, which will produce 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia from 40,000 tonnes of green hydrogen. In addition, Masdar has partnered with Siemens Energy, the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa, Marubeni Corporation and Khalifa University to develop an electrolysis facility to produce green hydrogen for the transport industry.

And, in Ruwais, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) is developing an ammonia project, using blue hydrogen, derived from methane, as a feedstock, at its downstream industrial hub and formed an alliance with ADQ and Mubadala to accelerate the use of hydrogen in key economic sectors, including utilities, transport and industry.

Elsewhere in the Arabian Gulf region,  Oman has announced a US $31 billion green hydrogen factory to be built in the Al Wusta governorate and Saudi Arabi plans to invest US $5 billion in the futuristic city Neon to produce green hydrogen from both wind and solar powered electrolysis by 2025.

Taking place over three days, the Gastech Conference programme has brought together over 300 government ministers, energy industry leaders, policymakers, and key customers to map out a future low-emission landscape. Key topics being discussed, in addition to hydrogen’s role in the energy transition, include decarbonisation and emissions management; financing and project investment; adapting business models in a post-Covid world; integrated energy suppliers; gas and LNG supply and demand dynamics; diversification of the future workforce and trading, contracting and pricing.

Lorenzo

Simultaneously, the Gastech Technical Conference is taking place around five learning streams – Hydrogen; Marine; EPC and Project; Processing and AI and Technology. The programme is providing multiple opportunities for working professionals to learn from over 300 of the world’s leading energy engineers as they present the latest technological breakthroughs and market opportunities for the industry.

Gastech 2021, is being held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai and is supported by the UAE’s Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure.  The exhibition and conference is co-hosted by ADNOC, Shell, and Venture Global LNG.

Before it closes tomorrow, (Thursday, September 23) Gastech 2021 will have received more than 15,000 visitors including senior decision-makers and energy industry thought leaders, and 250 exhibiting companies. Taking place alongside Gastech 2021 is the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) enabling visitors to attend both events’ exhibitions without the need to register twice.

Bentley Mulliner completes first Bacalar and Blower Customer Cars

Blower Car One is a millimetre-accurate mechanical recreation of Sir Henry ‘Tim’ Birkin’s 1929 supercharged 4½-Litre, and the first customer car of the world’s first pre-war continuation series…reports Asian Lite News

Bentley Mulliner has completed the first customer cars in both of its new series of pinnacle, handcrafted, bespoke projects. Each car is the first of their respective 12 vehicle series, with Bacalar Car One being the first customer delivery of Mulliner’s new coachbuilt barchetta. Meanwhile, Blower Car One is a millimetre-accurate mechanical recreation of Sir Henry ‘Tim’ Birkin’s 1929 supercharged 4½-Litre, and the first customer car of the world’s first pre-war continuation series.

The first customer cars follow their engineering prototypes, known in Bentley as the “Car Zeroes”. Each has completed significant durability mileage, performance and climatic testing in various locations and the engineering sign-off of both projects was successfully achieved to allow customer builds to commence.

Bacalar and Blower Continuation Series

Blower Car One

The first Blower Continuation Series car is a shining example of classic design, executed to perfection. The body is trimmed in period-correct Rexine and finished in bespoke Birkin Green paint, a recreation of the colour of the original Blower on which it’s based.. The Birkin Green body is complemented by identically coloured wire wheels, with colour-matched leather trimming the interior.

Mechanically, the car is identical to Birkin’s original, save for two safety-critical features – modern electric fuel pumps, and a foam baffle to the fuel tank. A dynator, a reworked alternative to the original dynamo has also been added, offering a more powerful and reliable charging system whilst retaining the look of the original dynamo. The engine is a brand new example of W.O. Bentley’s own 4½-litre design, featuring aluminium pistons, an overhead camshaft, four valves per cylinder and twin spark plugs. Attached to the front is the iconic supercharger that gives the Blower its name, and is an exact recreation of that created in the 1920s by renowned engineer, Amherst Villiers. Power has been measured as part of engine sign-off, with the near-100-year old design reliably making 240 bhp.

Bacalar Car One

Alongside the Blower, Bacalar Car One has also been finished. The carbon fibre body is finished in a bespoke colour for the lead customer – a champagne-tinted satin silver called Atom Silver. The car sits on 22” Bacalar Tri-Finish wheels, with polished faces, dark grey satin spokes and gloss Moss Green accent highlights. The same Moss Green accent is applied to the front grille centre bar, the insides of the headlamps, the upper body chrome surround and around the gloss black “power humps” to the rear. Gloss black also provides contrast to the A-pillars, grille meshes and surrounds, bonnet vents, side vents, lower body, rear bumper insert and brake calipers. The rear of the car is finished with gloss black outer exhaust tips with Moss Green inners.

Naturally, the black and green sequence extrends to the interior.. Beluga leather is accented with Moss Green hide to the wings of the console, the outer seat backs and throughout the cabin as contrast stitching through the unique Bacalar quilting pattern. The seat centres use fine Nappa leather, while the carpets are beluga diamond-carved overmats with Moss Green binding and stitching.

Bentley Bacalar Car One

Open Pore Riverwood over Gloss Black veneer with unique satin bronze detailing flows across the cockpit into the doors and behind the front seats, creating a circle of 5,000-year-old veneer. The details of the cabin are truly special, with:

•  Bronze finishes to the steering wheel and headrest bezels, upper ventilation bullseye vents and accent rings

•  A satin nickel finish to the clock and Bentley Rotating Display dial faces

• Black anodised interior brightware

• Bright chrome Bentley wings

• Gloss black finishing to the speaker grilles

• Bespoke Bacalar luggage, that fits behind the front seats, crafted in Beluga hide with contrast Bentley embroidered emblems and Bacalar quilting pattern in Moss Green with Beluga fine Nappa leather piping

PAUL WILLIAMS, BENTLEY DIRECTOR OF MULLINER AND MOTORSPORT: “Seeing these first two cars now finished has given the whole team an enormous sense of pride. Years of work have gone into the design and development of these projects, and seeing them together is incredibly rewarding. Mulliner is truly the only place in the world that could deliver a 21st century, coachbuilt grand touring barchetta at the same time as recreating an iconic road-going 1929 race car. I’m excited for our customers to take delivery of their new cars, and to seeing the rest of the orders in both series come to life.”

‘Natural gas to play pivotal role in UAE’s economic growth’

Natural gas is set to play a pivotal role in powering economic growth in the UAE over the next 50 years…reports Asian Lite News

Natural gas is set to play a pivotal role in powering economic growth in the UAE over the next 50 years, according to Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Managing Director and Group CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).

Delivering the opening address of Gastech 2021, Dr. Al Jaber highlighted the UAE’s leadership in natural gas and said “natural gas will support the nation’s vision for economic growth as set out by the Leadership in the ‘Principles of the Fifty’.”

UAE flag

“The Principles of the Fifty is a mandate for progress driven by 10 guiding principles aimed at making the UAE the most dynamic economy in the world. Gas will play a pivotal role in this blueprint for growth, as the essential fuel stock for our downstream hub in Ruwais and our industrial joint venture, TA’ZIZ,” Dr. Al Jaber said.

Speaking virtually, he explained that the UAE is strengthening its position as a regional leader in natural gas and the emerging blue Hydrogen market. He attributed this leadership position to the foresight of the Founding Founder of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who recognised the enormous potential natural gas offered and the need to balance economic growth with environmental protection.

ALSO READ: UAE outperforms major tourist spots in hotel occupancy

“Our Founding Father Sheikh Zayed’s commitment to the environment and truly sustainable development was the key driver. In 1973, at his direction, ADNOC stopped burning the associated gas from all its operations, and instead captured it and shipped it.

“In short,” Dr. Al Jaber added, “we turned an environmental liability into a commercial opportunity. From that moment, when it came to gas, we never looked back. For almost fifty years the UAE has viewed gas in all its forms as one big opportunity, and we’ve built our gas business on a number of firsts.”

He pointed out that the country was the first in the region to stop flaring and find economic uses for gas, the first to build a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant, the first to produce ultra-sour gas at an industrial scale, and the first to store carbon dioxide and use it in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) to liberate more gas.

The UAE is on track to achieve gas self-sufficiency as ADNOC leverages advanced technologies to expand into unconventional gas, tap into gas caps and unlock new reservoirs, as part of the company’s integrated gas strategy launched in 2018.

“At the heart of this goal, is the expansion of our producing assets, like Shah and the development of new ones, like the unique Umm Shaif gas cap and the Hail, Ghasha and Dalma project,” Dr. Al Jaber stated, as he provided an update on ADNOC’s progress.

“Construction of artificial islands is underway and we are leveraging our experience in world-class developments to ensure costs are minimized and commercial benefits maximized for all our partners. Together, these projects will deliver over 3 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day, enough to power several million homes.”

‘Natural gas to play pivotal role in UAE’s economic growth’

He went on to share his perspectives on natural gas markets and the role natural gas will play in the energy transition.

“As the world consolidates its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, LNG and broader gas markets globally are tightening, with demand outpacing supply. Longer-term, the outlook is also robust, driven particularly by markets in Asia. Today, gas provides almost one-quarter of the world’s energy supply and will continue to play a critical role in the global energy system. No other fuel source can reliably supply the baseload power to heat and cool homes, drive heavy industry and expand economies, all while keeping emissions at a minimum.”

Dr. Al Jaber added that as innovations are helping to make gas even cleaner and more sustainable, the UAE is applying technology to create zero-carbon fuels from gas such as Hydrogen. “Already at ADNOC, we produce about 300,000 tons of hydrogen a year. By leveraging our existing gas infrastructure and commercial-scale CCUS capabilities, the UAE can and will become a major player in the emerging blue hydrogen market.”

Boris calls on rich nations to meet $100bn climate pledge

Prime Minister Boris Johnson told the roundtable that “history will judge” the world’s richest nations if they fail to deliver on their pledge to commit $ 100 billion in annual climate aid ahead of COP26, reports Asian Lite Newsdesk

The UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said that COP26 UN Climate Change Conference is “a turning point” for the world.

“I think the Glasgow COP26 is a turning point for the world. And it’s the moment when we have to grow up and take our responsibilities,” Johnson told reporters at the UN headquarters in New York following the closing of the Informal Leaders Roundtable on Climate Action.

Calling on the rich countries to honour their pledge to provide each year $ 100 billion for the climate action in the developing countries, the Prime Minister said that “it is the developing world that is bearing the brunt of catastrophic climate change in the forms of hurricanes and fires and floods and the real long-term economic damage that they face.”

“It’s the developed world that over 200 years has put the carbon in the atmosphere that is causing this acceleration of climate change and, say, it really is up to us to help them,” he added.

Earlier, Johnson told the roundtable that “history will judge” the world’s richest nations if they fail to deliver on their pledge to commit $ 100 billion in annual climate aid ahead of COP26.

He placed the chances of securing the money before November at “six out of 10”.

“We cannot let climate action become another victim of coronavirus. Let us be the leaders who secure the very health of te planet for our children, grandchildren and generations to come,” Johnson said at the event.

While international support for tackling climate change has increased hugely since 2015, developed countries have collectively failed to reach the $100 billion target – last week the OECD confirmed that only $79.6 billion was mobilised in 2019.

There has been some recent progress. All G7 countries have committed to enhance contributions in the next five years, including scaling up finance for adaptation and nature. At the G7 Summit in June, new pledges amounting to $4 billion per year in additional finance were made by major economies.

He also assured his country “will lead by example, keeping the environment on the global agenda and serving as a launch pad for a global green industrial revolution.”

However, he warned that “no one country can turn the tide, it would be akin to bailing out a liner with a single bucket.”

The UK has already committed £11.6 billion in international climate finance over the next five years, twice the previous five-year commitment. The Prime Minister also announced on Monday that £550 million of this will be allocated to support developing countries to meet new zero by adopting the policies and technologies needed to end the use of coal and create a cleaner, greener planet.

The roundtable follows the recent report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, signalling a “code red for humanity,” and comes less than six weeks before the COP26 Climate Change Conference in Glasgow.

The roundtable addresses the gaps that remain on the actions urgently needed from national governments — especially the G20 — on mitigation, finance and adaptation.

With fewer than 50 days to go until the UK-hosted COP26 Summit, the Prime Minister asked world leaders to build on the work that has already been done and get public and private finance flowing so that the climate finance target can finally be met.

At the end of the UN General Assembly this week the UK will publish the detail of countries’ climate finance commitments to date.

In response to calls from developing countries for greater transparency and predictability in international climate finance, the UK has asked Germany and Canada to lead on developing a ’$100bn Delivery Plan’, to be published ahead of the COP26 Summit. The detail on contributions the

UK will publish this week will be a key component of this Plan, which will outline how the $100bn goal will be met through to 2025.
