Bollywood actor and humanitarian Mr. Sonu Sood has joined hands with Aster Volunteers, to encourage people to be aware of the alarming rate of rising liver disease cases in India and take proactive efforts to manage their liver health…reports Asian Lite News

On occasion of World Liver Day on 19th April, Bollywood actor and humanitarian Mr. Sonu Sood has joined hands with Aster Volunteers, the global CSR programme of Aster DM Healthcare to encourage people to be aware of the alarming rate of rising liver disease cases in India and take proactive efforts to manage their liver health. Liver failure due to the unavailability of viable organ donors is one of the main causes of death from liver disease.

The initiative will also support 50 underprivileged children in need of liver transplants receive the needed care at Aster Hospitals’ Multi-Organ Transplant Centre located at Aster CMI and Aster RV Hospitals in Bangalore, and Aster Medcity and Aster MIMS Hospital Calicut in Kerala, India.

In India, liver disease claims 200,000 lives every year,[i] while only 1500-2000 transplants are conducted every year, 10% of which are for children.[ii] One of the key reasons is the inability to afford the high costs associated with transplant cases. In addition to this, limited universal health-care access and limited availability of viable donors for transplant are major challenges.

Dr. Azad Moopen, Founder Chairman and Managing Director of Aster DM Healthcare:,“Aster since its inception has always believed in giving back to the society. Through this programme and with our association with a humanitarian like Sonu Sood, we intend to raise awareness on organ donation so that more lives, particularly of children can be saved. In the initial phase, we will be supporting 50 children in need of liver transplants from underprivileged families at our hospitals. Apart from being a successful actor, Sonu Sood is a philanthropist at heart. We have all seen his work during the lockdown days and he continues to do so. At Aster, we have been inspired by his act of volunteerism and philanthropy which is something Aster Volunteers stands for – to invite people to volunteer and support the underprivileged and also empower them for a better future. With Mr. Sood’s support in raising awareness among people we are hoping to reach out to more and more underprivileged families and children whose lives can be saved.”

Bollywood Actor & Humanitarian Sonu Sood said: “I happened to come across some of the phenomenal work Aster DM Healthcare has done through Aster Volunteers. It is amazing to see the large number of philanthropic activities taken up by Aster Volunteers and I am glad to support the cause. Rising incidence of liver disease, increasing fatality due to unavailability of viable donors and inability of the needy to afford transplants are causes of concern. We need to collectively come together to raise awareness on the same and help the needy. I hope my voice reaches out to those families whose children are in line for liver transplants but haven’t been able to do so due to unaffordability. I hope the association with Aster Volunteers continues to grow and we work towards a healthier tomorrow.”

Aster Hospital’s newly launched Multi-Organ Transplant centre is a multi-institutional and multidisciplinary centre designed to provide the best transplant experience. The centre is officiated by a skilled team of surgeons with technical expertise in performing different types of transplants including Liver, Kidney, Heart, Lung, Cornea and Bone Marrow Transplant. The centre also has one of the largest paediatric liver transplant programme in entire South India, that supports complete comprehensive care for liver diseases in children, comprising some of the best hepatologists (liver specialist doctors), best liver surgeons, trained coordinators, counsellors, and a nursing team along with critical care specialists, anaesthetists, interventional radiologists, and physiotherapists. The teams at these centres have been trained at some of the best hospitals and specialize in liver treatment abroad, holding a vast experience in hepato-pancreato biliary and abdominal multi-organ transplant surgeries. Mahira Khan appointed as British Asian Trust’s newest Ambassador

World renowned and much-loved Pakistani actor Mahira Khan has been appointed as the British Asian Trust’s latest Ambassador to support their work across South Asia…reports Asian Lite News

With almost 90% of people in need of mental health treatment having no access to any kind of support, Mahira is supporting the British Asian Trust’s current Peace of Mind campaign which aims to raise awareness of mental health issues and needs in both Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Mahira is providing the keynote address at the Trust’s Iftar event on 14 April 2022 at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House in London with guests including celebrities, business leaders and philanthropists.

The Trust plans to scale up its already successful work to build even more awareness, reach more people and provide more access to community-based healthcare, referrals and support. Marginalised children who have suffered severe trauma will be a priority.

Richard Hawkes, Chief Executive of the British Asian Trust, said: “We are delighted to have Mahira Khan, one of Pakistan’s greatest superstars, join us as an Ambassador. Mahira’s voice will be incredibly powerful in helping us to lift the silence on mental health and improve access to services in Pakistan and Bangladesh. The need in both countries is great and we’re already having an impact on changing lives, we can’t do this work alone.”

Mahira Khan said: “I am proud to be an Ambassador for the British Asian Trust and support their work in South Asia. Their mental health work in Pakistan has been ground-breaking, reaching millions of people but there is more to do. Untreated mental health issues can have a devastating impact on individuals, families, lives and relationships. Talking more about mental health, breaking the stigma around it and helping more people access support so they can have peace of mind is critical. No one should ever have to suffer in silence.”

Mahira Khan

One in four people in Pakistan will experience mental health issues, but a lack of services means there is only one psychiatrist per half million people, compared to one for every 10,000 people in the UK.  Stigma associated with mental health also prevents people from seeking help, with the subject still taboo in many communities.

In Bangladesh, suicide is the leading cause of death among Bangladeshi adolescents. Women and girls, especially those in rural communities, are particularly vulnerable. Most Bangladeshis have no access to mental health services, and they encounter stigma and social exclusion.

Without appropriate support, mental health conditions can significantly worsen a person’s wellbeing and their ability to maintain relationships, forcing them to become isolated and alone. They can also lead to alcohol and drug dependency, hospitalisation, severe depression and even suicide.

In Pakistan, the Trust’s pioneering work in mental health has already reached 28 million people via SMS campaigns and social media activity. Over 46,000 people have attended mental health awareness raising sessions in their communities and been screened for mental health issues. Training has also been provided to 2,000 frontline health practitioners in basic mental health awareness.

In Bangladesh, the Trust is working with leading mental health organisations to develop community-based services available to all through tele and online services, as well as tackling stigma in the workplace and communities and encouraging those in need to seek support.

Trevor credits his mother for his global stardom at SIBF 2021

Celebrity TV host and comedian offers his fans at the 40th Sharjah International Book Fair an intimate account of how his mother’s upbringing set him up for global fame and success…reports Asian Lite News

The Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF 2021) ballroom couldn’t hold another soul on Friday night. The sight was reminiscent of a sold-out rock concert with hundreds of fans stretching their arms out trying to raise their phones higher than their neighbour’s to get a better shot of the historic moment Trevor Noah walked through the SIBF 2021 doors.

Trevor credits his mother for his global stardom at SIBF 2021

“In life there are two factors that’ll determine where you end up. One is how hard you work, and the other is your luck”, he said while responding to Fade’s query about whether the Daily Show’s host could’ve predicted his remarkable journey of success, one that he recounts in his book, New Memoir.

“Luck is something I have no control over, yet cannot discount”, added Noah, saying his mother taught him that these blessings are not promised to anyone.

When asked how many people had read Trevor’s book, the response from the crowd was tremendous. Sharing unique insights into his marvellous journey to the top, the best-selling author said that he hoped for the movie on his book did “just as well”.

In an answer to another question about whether his friends actually knew where Noah came from before reading New Memoir, he said: “A lot of people asked me ‘why did you write the book, or how did you write the book?’, adding “my friends are the reason why I wrote it because they wanted me to put my stories – the ones I would share live with my audiences during my travels around the world – in a book”.

The process of writing, Trevor admitted wasn’t easy. Trevor has lent his unique storytelling voice to the audiobook version of New Memoir which has earned global appreciation and acclaim.

Despite the fact that an in-depth account of Noah’s childhood is presented in his memoir, the author said to the audience’s surprise that he never journaled. How did he manage such a descriptive narrative then? “I’ve been blessed and cursed with a very good memory, which means that I can remember most of the things that happened to me in my life.”, said Noah.

Noah’s mother was integral to his book-writing journey who helped him fact check and remember things properly when the author was unsure.

Trevor described his book as a “tribute to his mother”, and went on to say, “I am lucky to be my mother’s son. I didn’t get to choose who she would be, I didn’t ‘work hard’ to get my mother”, he said throwing an air quote. “And yet, she is the reason I got everything I did in life”, Noah continued, adding “she was the person who worked the hardest to get me here; she was the person who made me love books in the first place”.

Talking about how he did not always get the toys or clothes he wanted as a child because his mum could not afford them, the Daily Show’s host proudly said: “She always made sure that we had books”.

Reading all those books that his mother brought home from book clubs or garage sales as buying them wouldn’t always be possible, would take Noah “to a different world”.

Kris, a father of two young daughters said he struggled to get them off their screens. “What do we do?”, he inquired Noah, which turned the conversation towards the topic of social media.

Noah advised setting a restricted period of screen time as a reward for children when they’ve completed a certain number of hours of reading. “If you give children the right books, they will be fighting you to read”, he added echoing the message of the SIBF 2021 theme ‘There’s always a right book’.

“If we are lucky, we have about 4,000 weeks to spend on this earth. So, it’s time to stop living on autopilot,” was the last word of advice by the young man as he concluded an electrifying conversation with his SIBF 2021 audience, encouraging them to write their story even if they never publish it as, according to Noah, it is one of the best ways to express oneself and also tackle with and put a rest to unresolved emotions from the past.
