Gordon Ramsay has added a crisp and refreshing new Pinot Grigio to his collection, created in partnership with world-famous winemaker Alberto Antonini. The collection combines globally renowned chef and restaurateur Gordon’s passion with the heart and soul of Italian winemaking, joining Gordon Ramsay Intenso Rosso red wine on the shelves. Gordon Ramsay Pinot Grigio was recently blind-tasted by four Masters of Wine and awarded Gold at The Drinks Business Global Pinot Grigio Masters 2024, reports columnist Riccha Grrover for Asian Lite International.

Gordon Ramsay Pinot Grigio is crafted with the same passion and precision that Gordon brings to his culinary creations, and he recommends it is perfectly paired with linguine al pesto or a
charcuterie board. The wine truly reflects Ramsay’s commitment to excellence. With a soft yet dry taste, it offers a refreshing palate experience, featuring notes of ripe pear and citrus fruits.

This stunning addition to the collection is made using grapes sourced from vineyards on the picturesque hills of Colli Berici, south of Vicenza in north-eastern Italy. These have been carefully hand-harvested from late August to early September to ensure optimal ripeness and flavour. This 2023 vintage, which was an outstanding year for Pinot Grigio, comes from the renowned Delle Venezie Denominazione Di Origine Controllata (DOC) region.

Alberto Antonini’s contemporary approach to winemaking resonated deeply with Gordon and their partnership led to the creation of wines from Italy’s best wine growing regions.

The Gordon Ramsay Pinot Grigio is available at Tesco, RRP: £8.50.

TASTING NOTE

Soft yet dry, refreshing on the palate with notes of ripe pear and citrus fruits, characteristic of this grape variety grown on the picturesque hills of North-eastern Italy.

VINEYARD

Crafted from Pinot Grigio grapes grown in the Colli Berici hills south of Vicenza in the Veneto region of northern Italy, this crisp, fresh wine is the result of selecting the best quality grapes from hillside mature, south-facing vineyards. These grapes were meticulously hand-harvested in late August to early September, ensuring optimal ripeness and flavour concentration.

WINEMAKING

Whole cluster grapes were crushed and gently pressed. The juice was then allowed to settle and clarify before undergoing cool fermentation at 16 to 18°C in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. To enhance complexity and texture, the wine was aged for a period of 3 to 6 months on fine lees in stainless steel tanks before bottling.

Experts Warn Against Processed Foods

Public awareness coupled with government action is needed to curb unhealthy food practices which will then help fight the rising non-communicable diseases like obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, according to experts on Tuesday.

India has been witnessing a significant rise in obesity, diabetes, and hypertension which have been driving various health problems majorly heart diseases, stroke, and cancers.

A recent study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, showed that westernisation of diet characterised by increased consumption of processed foods, refined carbohydrates, and unhealthy fats has contributed to the global rise in gut microbial vulnerability, chronic inflammation, and chronic diseases, affecting mainly the cardiovascular system, systemic metabolism, and the gut.

“Changing dietary patterns and eating more industrial food products is responsible for increasing obesity and diabetes and 56 per cent deaths in India,” Arun Gupta, a paediatrician, and NAPi convener, told IANS

He blamed it on the “seductive and misleading advertising” and called for “necessary stringent regulation to control the food industry which comes at the expense of a sicker population”.

Meanwhile, the study by researchers from the Medical University of Innsbruck in Austria discussed the links between diet and disease in the context of obesity and type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, gut and liver diseases, and solid malignancies.

They also argued that “healthcare professionals and societies must react today to the detrimental effects of the Western diet to bring about sustainable change and improved outcomes in the future”.

Rajeev Jayadevan, a Kochi-based gastroenterologist, told IANS that the term “Western diet” may be misleading and stigmatising, instead, he urged “it needs to be replaced by more precise, neutral terms such as ‘convenience diet’, ‘industrialised diet’ or ‘urban diet’.”

“Thus, it is not a question of the Western diet, but rather dietary indiscretion. It is driven by peer influence, advertising, availability, affordability, and convenience,” he said.

“Essentially, it refers to an increased amount of ultra-processed foods, high-calorie beverages, and fatty snacks that are high in sugar and salt being consumed instead of a balanced diet consisting of healthy fruit and vegetable servings, whole grains, eggs, legumes, fish, and lean meat,” he explained.

The doctor stated that excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods, unhealthy fats, and high salt and sugar in the setting of a sedentary lifestyle is a well-known recipe for chronic illnesses.

He called for educating children “about healthy eating patterns, informing of the outcomes of poor dietary choices”.

“While the additional effects of alcohol and tobacco are already known, what needs to be studied more are the effects of pesticides, plastics, reheated oil, various pollutants, food colouring agents, and preservatives,” Jayadevan said.

Gupta also suggested that the government “bring a Bill for ‘warning on the front of the pack’ and ‘restriction of marketing and advertising’ exposure of people and move to halt rising obesity and diabetes”.

  There is a direct connection between the health of your gut and the way your skin appears, said experts on Tuesday.

With increasing skin and gut problems, the experts highlighted the importance of diet and lifestyle. Gut health is important for skin health because of the gut-skin axis. Imbalances in the gut microbiota can cause inflammation, which can appear on the skin as conditions like acne, eczema, or rosacea.

Maintaining a healthy gut helps regulate immune responses, which may reduce skin inflammation and improve overall skin condition. A balanced gut microbiome ensures proper digestion and nutrient absorption, supporting the skin’s natural barrier function. Proper gut health can thus lead to improved skin health and appearance.

“Gut health plays a crucial role in skin health due to the gut-skin axis. Imbalances in gut microbiota can lead to inflammation, which may manifest as skin issues. Maintaining a healthy gut helps regulate immune responses, potentially reducing skin inflammation and improving overall skin condition,” Dr. Prasad Bhate, HOD & Consultant – Medical Gastroenterology at Manipal Hospital, Pune, told IANS.

Diet plays a vital role in maintaining both gut and skin health. “Foods rich in fibre, probiotics, and antioxidants, such as yoghurt, kefir, leafy greens, berries, nuts, and fatty fish, support both gut and skin health. These foods help maintain a balanced gut microbiome and provide essential nutrients that promote skin hydration and repair,” he further added.

Many gastrointestinal conditions, including inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), are connected to skin manifestations. Skin issues such as acne, rosacea, and psoriasis are linked to gut health. These conditions often correlate with gut dysbiosis, an imbalance in gut bacteria that can trigger systemic inflammation and immune responses, worsening skin problems.

The relationship between gut and skin health underscores the importance of maintaining a balanced gut microbiome to prevent or alleviate these skin conditions. By addressing gut health, it is possible to reduce inflammation and immune-related skin issues, highlighting the interconnectedness of the body’s systems.

“Many gastrointestinal conditions, such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), are associated with skin manifestations. Skin conditions linked to gut health include acne, rosacea, and psoriasis. These conditions often correlate with gut dysbiosis, where an imbalance in gut bacteria can trigger systemic inflammation and immune responses, exacerbating skin issues,” Dr Naresh Jain, Senior Consultant – Dermatology at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, told IANS.

While medications can assist in managing skin problems, addressing underlying gut health is crucial for long-term improvement.

“Yes, medications like antioxidants, antibiotics, probiotics, and anti-inflammatory drugs can help manage skin problems by addressing underlying gut health issues. However, they should be used under medical supervision, as improper use can disrupt gut microbiota balance and potentially worsen skin conditions,” advises Dr. Jain.

Maintaining gut health involves eating a variety of fibre-rich foods, reducing ultra-processed food intake, and staying hydrated. These steps can help maintain a healthy gut microbiome, which in turn, supports healthier skin.

Recipe: Delicious Chilli Paneer Fried Rice

Ingredients

  1. Onion – 1 [ chopped into cubes]
  2. Yellow Capsicum – 1 [small, chopped in cubes]
  3. Red Capsicum – 1 [small, chopped in cubes]
  4. Green Capsicum – 1 [small, chopped in cubes]
  5. Garlic Cloves – 3 [chopped]
  6. Spring Onions – ¼ cup [chopped]
  7. Soya Sauce – 2 tbsp
  8. Schezwan Sauce – 1 tsp
  9. Red Chilli Sauce – 1 tsp
  10. Salt – a pinch
  11. Pepper Powder – 1 tsp
  12. Cooked Rice – 2 cups
  13. Sugar – 1 tsp
  14. Oil – as needed

Ingredients to marinate the paneer

  1. Soya Sauce – 1 tbsp
  2. Corn flour – 2 tbsp
  3. Salt – ¼ tsp
  4. Paneer – 100 g

Method

  1. In a large bowl add corn flour, paneer, soya sauce, pepper powder and salt. Mix everything well.
  2. Heat 2 tbsp oil on low- medium flame in a wok. Add in the panner and fry it until desired crispiness. Set aside once done.
  3. In the same wok, add 2 tbsp of oil and add in the chopped garlic. Cook for a minute until the raw smell goes.
  4. Add in the onions and capsicum. Cook for a minute.
  5. Add in the soya sauce, schezwan sauce, red chilli sauce, pepper powder, salt and sugar. Saute for a few seconds. Add in the cooked rice and fried paneer. Continue tossing and finish it off by garnishing with spring onions.

Since then, Shipra has appeared on numerous cooking shows in India and abroad, establishing herself as one of the most successful ‘MasterChef’ winners globally, with over a decade of experience in television.

Cooking is often praised for its therapeutic effects, helping to calm the nerves of the person who is handling the process.

However, there’s another side of the coin, cooking and running a professional kitchen presents a different challenge, often leading to chaos, especially during peak times like weekends and holidays.

Shipra acknowledged the dual nature of cooking for leisure versus running a professional kitchen, noting that each comes with its own charm and set of challenges.

She told: “When I cook at home, it’s a meditative experience. The rhythmic chopping, the aroma of spices, and the joy of preparing something delicious for loved ones are incredibly therapeutic. It allows me to slow down and savour the process.”

Conversely, Shipra described the high-energy, dynamic environment of a professional kitchen, saying, “It’s about precision, teamwork, and consistently delivering high-quality dishes under pressure. Despite the chaos, there’s a sense of exhilaration and fulfillment in orchestrating a well-run kitchen and seeing satisfied customers. Both experiences enrich my culinary journey, teaching me patience, creativity, and resilience.”

Her journey in the culinary world has been a source of inspiration for many food enthusiasts.

When asked, in hindsight, what were some of her key decisions or innovations that brought her the kind of success that everyone dreams of, Shipra told IANS: “My journey has been deeply fulfilling, and looking back, several key decisions and innovations have shaped my path. First and foremost, participating in and winning MasterChef India was a pivotal moment. It gave me a platform to showcase my culinary skills and connect with a broader audience.”

Shipra also highlighted her embrace of fusion cuisine, blending traditional Indian flavours with global influences, as a significant factor in her success.

“My commitment to using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients has always been a cornerstone of my cooking philosophy, ensuring that each dish is not only delicious but also sustainable. Lastly, my decision to author cookbooks and host cooking shows has helped me reach and inspire countless home cooks and food enthusiasts, fostering a community that shares my passion for the culinary arts,” she added.

Cooking for home chefs in India saw a sea change, with the satellite of which ‘MasterChef India’ takes a huge chunk of credit. How has the scenario changed in the face of the Internet revolution and technological advancements?

Shipra told: “‘MasterChef India’ revolutionised the culinary landscape by bringing gourmet cooking into Indian homes. It empowered home chefs to experiment and dream big. The advent of the Internet and advancements in technology, like 4G and now 5G, have further transformed this landscape.”

Deepika Padukone on Diets: “I Eat Well!”

Actress Deepika Padukone said that she eats well and has never followed a diet that she cannot be consistent with.

Deepika took to Instagram, where she shared a collage of pancakes paired with whipped cream, brownie with ice cream and samosas.

For the caption, the mother-to-be shared that she eats well.

“Surprised to see this on my feed? Well, I eat! And I eat well! Ask anyone who knows me. So don’t believe anything else you might hear or read. The trick? Balance, Consistency and Listening to YOUR Body,” Deepika said.

The 38-year-old shared that there is a misunderstanding around the word diet.

“There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding around the word ‘Diet’. We often believe that ‘Diet’ means to starve, to eat less and to eat all of the things we detest. What ‘Diet’ really means is the total of all the food and drink consumed by an individual,” she said.

“The word actually comes from the Greek word ‘diaita’, which means ‘way of life’. I’ve always, for as long as I can remember, followed a ‘Balanced Diet’,” Deepika wrote.

Deepika strongly said that she loves to indulge.

“And it is for me ‘a way of life’. I’ve never followed a diet that I cannot be consistent with or one that is a fad. Now, do I indulge? Of course, I do, as demonstrated above! But it most certainly isn’t my way of life,” she wrote.

“Ever heard the phrase ‘you are what you eat?’ If there’s one thing I’ve learnt (the hard-ish way) it is that those words couldn’t be truer.”

Talking about Deepika’s work front, the mom-to-be is basking in the success of ‘Kalki 2898 AD.’

Directed by Nag Ashwin, the post-apocalyptic film is inspired by Hindu scriptures and set in the year 2898 AD. Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Prabhas and Disha Patani are also part of the film. The film is a mythology-inspired sci-fi extravaganza set in the future. Actors Vijay Deverakonda, Dulquer Salmaan and Mrunal Thakur have cameos in the film.

Ranveer, on the other hand, will be seen headlining Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Don 3’ in the coming months.

Actors Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, who attended the grand wedding of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant on July 12, shared a heartwarming picture with the newlyweds to convey their best wishes.
