Bollywood’s power siblings

In the same vein as his brother, Zoya Akhtar started his career as a director, with box office successes and Filmfare awards like Gully Boy, Zoya has cemented her place as a mainstay in the industry…writes Olivia Sarkar

All brothers and sisters mature by supporting one another during trying times, despite bickering over the most trivial of things (like the TV remote). To be honest, there is something appealing about every sibling relationship. There are plenty of these ties in Bollywood. Anything is possible for siblings who are determined. The benefits of having a sister are unmatched, whether it’s a partner in crime or a shoulder to cry on. Take a look at some of Bollywood’s power siblings

Harshvardhan Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor

Harshvardhan and Sonam Kapoor are regarded as the most elegant and stylish brother-sister team for a good reason. They consistently strike the mark when it comes to style and fashion, which distinguishes them from other players in the field. During their careers, both gifted actors have starred in highly acclaimed and financially lucrative movies, and they have huge aspirations for the future. Sonam and Harshvardhan, rely most of on the third sibling, Rhea Kapoor, who prefers to be a behind the camera than in front of it. Through thick and thin, they have always supported one another.

Ayushmann Khurrana and Aparshakti Khurana

Both Ayushmann and Aparshakti Khurana have distinguished themselves in the profession with work of the highest calibre; they started out in radio and television before transitioning to the big screen with the films “Dangal” and “Vicky Donor,” respectively. The Khurrana brothers are currently two of Bollywood’s most bankable and sought-after stars and are well-known for their multi-talented and witty personalities.

Huma Qureshi and Saqib Saleem

This is one of the most effective and undervalued teams in B-most town. Since making their professional debuts, they have both consistently given outstanding performances. Together and separately, Huma and Saqib have created some incredible movies, and they work hard to keep raising the bar.

Arjun Kapoor and Janhvi Kapoor

Arjun, Anshula, Janhvi, and Khushi always make for a stunning family snapshot when they are all posed together. But this shift happens after Sridevi’s passing, which made it possible for the half-siblings to get along more on a personal level. Janhvi has constantly mentioned how much she values Arjun and Anshula’s influence in her life. Unlike his half-sister Janhvi, who made her acting debut in 2018 with Dhadak, Arjun Kapoor made his Bollywood debut in 2012. This specific brother-and-sister team prefers to keep things straightforward and let their work speak for itself.

Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar

Without a doubt, the most talented brother-sister duo in Bollywood is Farhan and Zoya Akhtar. After beginning his career as an art film director, Farhan Akhtar went on to become a well-known actor and musician. In the same vein as his brother, Zoya Akhtar started his career as a director, with box office successes and Filmfare awards like Gully Boy, Zoya has cemented her place as a mainstay in the industry.

Shahid Kapoor and Ishan Khatter

Due to their strong friendship, this pair is possibly the most well-loved on the list. Shahid has made clear time and time again how much he values and adores his half-brother Ishaan. Ishaan and Shahid have acquired their acting prowess from their parents, opening the possibility for these brothers to one day rule Hindi cinema. Like his older brother, Ishaan caught the attention of the bigwigs, debuting in ‘Dhadak.’ The young actor, like his older brother, won recognition for his dancing. These brothers are well-known for their close bond and special place in the industry.

Kriti Sanon and Nupur Sanon

Nupur Sanon, sister of Kriti Sanon, made her acting debut and became well-known very rapidly. Unlike her sister, Nupur decided to showcase her talents in a music video rather than a Bollywood movie. Alongside Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar, Nupur made an appearance in B Praak’s latest song video, Filhall, and she hasn’t looked back since. Kriti, on the other hand, co-starred with Akshay in the blockbuster film Bachchan Pandey and has a packed calendar for the remainder of the year. They are well-known sister teams in the field. The actresses give us major sister goals and look great together. The sisters have grown quite close.

Anushka Sharma and Karnesh Sharma

In Bollywood, Anushka Sharma and her brother Karnesh have established themselves as a formidable sibling duo, producing innovative movies. They have worked together on movies like NH10, Pari, Phillauri, Bulbbul, and Paatal Lok, achieving several big sibling goals. While Karnesh Sharma, Anushka Sharma’s brother, created Clean OTT, a streaming service that specialises in female-oriented content, Anushka has her own production firm. We wish this brother-sister team the best of luck in their future endeavours. More force to them!

‘I’m much more… probably a bit left-wing’

The film, which also stars Radhika Apte, is scheduled to hit the screens on September 30…reports Asian Lite News

Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan has said that he is “left wing” and a “liberal” but he followed it up by saying that he knows he “shouldn’t say such things anymore today”.

While promoting his upcoming film ‘Vikram Vedha’, Saif in an interview talked about how he doesn’t agree with the thoughts and principles of his character in the film, where he plays an encounter specialist Vikram while Hrithik Roshan is Vedha, a gangster.

Saif told Biz Asia, “When the mafia problem was getting so out of control, there was this urban legend that we won’t show whether the ‘criminal’ was shot genuinely trying to escape, or executed, and later on, do the paperwork to show that he was trying to escape and we had to shoot him.

“That’s called an ‘encounter’, a ‘fake encounter’. It’s kind of a horrific judicial… I’m sure it’s completely illegal. But it’s cinematically quite disturbing as well, and that’s kind of what my character does. But he’s convinced he’s a good guy, because (he thinks) it’s required.”

He added: “I’m much more… probably a bit left-wing, I suppose… I don’t know, I probably shouldn’t say these things anymore today.”

The actor, who is married to Bollywood diva Kareena Kapoor Khan, called himself “liberal”.

“But yes, I’m really liberal and easygoing, and I think everyone is entitled to a fair trial before judgement. I’m certainly not for executing suspected criminals, which my character seems to love to do,” Saif said.

‘Vikram Vedha’ is a Hindi remake of the 2017 Tamil movie of the same name, starring R Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi. It’s said to be based on the Indian folktale, ‘Vikram aur Betaal’.

The film, which also stars Radhika Apte, is scheduled to hit the screens on September 30.

Kareena praises Saif and Hritik

Bollywood diva Kareena Kapoor Khan has tagged her actor-husband Saif Ali Khan and actor Hrithik Roshan, with whom she has worked in films such as ‘Yaadein’, ‘Kabhi Khushi Khabhie Gham’ and ‘Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon’ as best actors.

The actress, who is known for her pout, also called their upcoming film ‘Vikram Vedha’ a “blockbuster”.

She took to her Instagram story and shared a poster of the film and wrote: “Best film, best actors, best story, best directors, what a film… a blockbuster.

‘Vikram Vedha’ is an action-thriller written & directed by Pushkar-Gayatri.

Kareena Kapoor.

The story of Vikram Vedha is full of twists and turns, as the tough cop Vikram sets out to track and chase a dreaded gangster Vedha.

‘Vikram Vedha’ is presented by Gulshan Kumar, T-Series and Reliance Entertainment in association with Friday Filmworks & Jio Studios and a YNOT Studios Production.

The film is directed by Pushkar and Gayatri and produced by Bhushan Kumar & S. Sashikanth and Reliance Entertainment.

‘Vikram Vedha’ will hit the big screens globally on September 30.

‘India as a country is culturally very rich’

‘Vikram Vedha’, which also stars Saif Ali Khan, is set to release in theatres on September 30…reports Asian Lite News

Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan, who is currently awaiting the release of his upcoming film ‘Vikram Vedha’, feels that India as a country is culturally very rich and has a treasure of folk tales and mythology that can act as a fodder to tell stories on the celluloid.

The basic idea of ‘Vikram Vedha’ is based on the Indian mythological story of Vikram and Betaal.

Elaborating on the same, Hrithik said, “To take something like this that we have all heard in our childhood and create this entire story of ‘Vikram Vedha’ and to use it as a device, it’s so sharp.”

He further mentioned, “We have so many of such stories in our mythology and folklore. I think we need to re-look at this treasure, there’s so much fodder in there from a storytelling point of view.”

Director Pushkar of the film’s director duo, Pushkar-Gayatri, added, “What intrigues us as directors is that our mythology or folklore majorly have no demarcation about who is wrong or right. As creators, it’s refreshing to install the stories that are in the grey zone.”

‘Vikram Vedha’, which also stars Saif Ali Khan, is set to release in theatres on September 30.

What’s happening in Bollywood?

What is happening recently is that rather than have fun watching a film at the cinemas, people, the netizens, are having fun at the cost of films and filmmakers. They are being trolled mercilessly…writes Vinod Mirani

What exactly is happening in the Mumbai film industry? A sense of uncertainty prevails. There is an all-round nervousness and lack of confidence. The bigger the film due for release, the more the confusion between the makers, the exhibitors and the others concerned.

This situation has prevailed since before the pandemic and has only amplified after the industry reopened post lockdown. The films are failing to draw audience. The films of the biggest of stars are being rejected. What’s worrisome is that these films are being rejected wholesale, not even being given the privilege of the initial audience that used to throng the cinemas for any film with big stars.

It would be understandable if a film failed because of bad word of mouth. A lot of filmgoers decide whether to watch a film or not after getting audience reports. But that has not been happening recently.

The film critics (if such a tribe exists in India) have become the line of first defence for films that have failed. Not only do they not accept the fact, they try to find excuses on behalf of the filmmakers and stars. Some of them said that ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ and ‘Raksha Bandhan’ failed because they were bad films. And, to think that most of these so-called critics had rated both the films with four stars each!

What is happening recently is that rather than have fun watching a film at the cinemas, people, the netizens, are having fun at the cost of films and filmmakers. They are being trolled mercilessly.

The latest subject of ridicule in social media is the film ‘Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva’. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. Like with many other Hindi films, social media groups have taken a strong stand against the film. And there are many takers for such groups and the stand they take! Those connected with films would keep quiet for some time. Instead, they come out with statements that get the trolls started.

The example is the PVR multiplex chain’s social media post on Monday before the release of ‘Brahmastra’ that it had already sold 1,00,000 tickets in advance. This claim was followed by the chain saying that they were offering one ticket free against three bought for ‘Brahmastra’! Wasn’t the chain’s management contradicting its own claim on the demand for the film?

The responses that followed this announcement were anything but complimentary. They were humiliating, if one may say so. For a film claiming to have been made at a budget of Rs 400+ crore, the multiplex chain was claiming a sale of 1,00,000 tickets on Day One. This was a contradiction. And why the discount even before the film opened to the public?

‘Brahmastra’, between its announcement and hitting the screens, has taken a long time, say, seven years. When you take such a long time, you need to be careful about the information you release. Especially in this era of social networks.

That the film’s production was either not planned with foresight, or that things were going out of hand, was first noticed when the special effects costs started ballooning. As a solution, the provider was roped in as a partner.

Later came this Rs 400+ crore cost appeal to raise the admission rates. What it means is that the film has cost Rs 400+ crore, so please bear with us and pay extra. What is this? An exercise in crowd funding? Further, a claim is made that the film will give you your money’s worth! Now, who guarantees that, the filmmaker or the cinema management, which wants to raise the admission rates?

Money’s worth is a phrase used in Hindi as ‘paisa vasool’ and it was always the audience that decided it. The more reasonable the admission rates, the better the chances of that happening. The 1975 film, ‘Sholay’, had gone heavily over budget, so should the producers or the cinemas have raised the admission rates? No, they remained the same at Rs 2 to Rs 5 even after it became an all-time blockbuster after a slow start! There have been many films that went over budget, but there was no system of increasing the admission rates at whim!

The word was out that there is not going to be much provision for the pre-release promotion of the film, the budget for it having been cut down drastically. Such news has the tendency of trending on social media and proves to be detrimental.

The film promotions got weirder by the day. Earlier, the filmmaker and stars launched a film’s promotion in Mumbai with all the television, web and print media present. The media networks being what they are today, your message reaches all corners of the world within hours. It is covered all over, be it any media.

Next, you travel to Delhi, followed by some other place, such as Ahmedabad or Pune. Follow the same routine; address the media. What purpose does it serve? None. It has all been covered. And, they used the expression Road Show for this silly exercise.

A couple of weeks back, the unit of ‘Raksha Bandhan’ travelled to London and Dubai to promote the film! If a film does well in India, it works well in these countries, too. If you promote your film in Indian media, it is covered all over the world. So what was the idea? Such ideas come only from the stars for whatever the reason. A producer knows there is no benefit in this for him or the film, but he has to comply.

Finally, what is this new fashion of temple runs by stars on the eve of a release? The stars never did this, though a film’s producer and director did go to seek divine blessings. It was very personal for them and a matter of beliefs. Now, it is more a part of a promotional strategy. The visit is well-publicised in advance with the media following closely! It backfired on the stars of ‘Brahmastra’ on their visit to Ujjain’s Mahakal temple.

Now that the film, ‘Brahmastra’ has hit the screens, the final stage of promotion will start now. Trade experts will be convinced to praise the film with half-a-dozen posts. Of course, they have their rates, but, sadly, no credibility. Then there will be critics gifting four-to-five stars to the film.

Looks like the best minds in the film industry have stopped working. The way the release strategy of the film has been handled shows total lack of confidence. The people concerned come across as a confused lot. Why, in the first place, release this cost-heavy film now, during a dull period? Why not wait for the more opportune Diwali release?

Style stars of Bollywood

When we talk about fashion, Bollywood’s current reigning stars know that it plays a key role in their popularity and charisma. Not only do these leading actors know how to follow trends, but also how to influence them, armed with a team of stylists for every outing. Karan Johar

Akshay Kumar

Akshay Kumar still reigns strong and gives the younger set of stars a run for their money and something to be envious about. From sharp suits to frayed denims and track suits, his swag far surpasses others.

B’town hope for ‘achche din’ with new releases

‘Brahmastra’ is a three-part film franchise and the beginning of India’s first original universe, the Astraverse. It is a new original cinematic universe inspired by deeply rooted concepts and tales in Indian mythology but set in the modern world…reports Asian Lite News

Hindi cinema of late seems to be in trouble as Bollywood’s big-ticket releases such as ‘Samrat Prithviraj’, ‘Shamshera’, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ and ‘Raksha Bandhan’ have failed to impress the audience.

Nevertheless, a motley bunch of films starring names such as Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Ajay Devgn, Varun Dhawan, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon are lined up for release in the coming months.

However, the million-dollar question looming over the furrowed brows of distributors is: Will these movies ensure the return of ‘achche din’ for Bollywood?

The first big film, which is slated to hit the screens is Ayan Mukerji’s trilogy ‘Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva’ starring newlywed couple Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt along with Amitabh Bachchan and Nagarjuna. The film is scheduled to hit the theatres on September 9.

‘Brahmastra’ is a three-part film franchise and the beginning of India’s first original universe, the Astraverse. It is a new original cinematic universe inspired by deeply rooted concepts and tales in Indian mythology but set in the modern world.

During a conversation with, Ayan had earlier said that with ‘Brahmastra’ he has put so much in the film for so long that he has a “very peaceful confidence when it comes to this film”.

Next in line is Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan-starrer ‘Vikram Vedha’, a neo-noir action thriller, which is a remake of a Tamil hit film helmed by Pushkar and Gayathri, who are also directing the Hindi remake. Set to release on September 30, the film tells the story of a tough police officer who sets out to track down a menacing gangster. It also features Radhika Apte in a prominent role.

On October 7, Amitabh Bachchan, Rashmika Mandanna and Neena Gupta’s movie ‘Goodbye’ will be hitting the theatres for release. The film is touted as a heart-warming story about family, life and relationships.

After giving three duds such as ‘Bachchhan Paandey’, ‘Samrat Prithviraj’ and ‘Raksha Bandhan’, Bollywood star Akshay Kumar will be seen coming on the big screen once again with ‘Ram Setu’, which will be locking horns with Ajay Devgn’s ‘Thank God’ at the box-office. Both movies have been booked for a Diwali release on October 24.

‘Ram Setu’ is an action-adventure drama that tells a story rooted in Indian cultural and historical heritage. ‘Thank God’, which also stars Sidharth Malhotra and Rakul Preet Singh, has a fantasy-based plotline which follows Sidharth’s untimely death.

Ajay, reportedly, is playing the role of the God of Death, ‘Yamraj’, in the movie. The comic plot of the movie is to be driven by the banter between Ajay and Sidharth.

Bollywood stars Ajay Devgn and Tabu are all set to bring the nail-biting mystery back on screen after 2015 movie ‘Drishyam’ with ‘Drishyam 2’, a remake of the Mohanlal-starrer by the same name. Actor Akshaye Khanna has also joined the team of the hit thriller.

‘Drishyam’ chronicled the story of a family man Vijay Salgaonkar, who leaves no stone unturned to protect his family after an unfortunate incident involving his elder daughter, brought them under the police’s scanner. The second instalment of the thriller is set to release on November 18.

The Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon-starrer ‘Bhediya’ is all set to light up the screen on November 25. The horror-comedy is directed by Amar Kaushik and written by Niren Bhatt, best known for penning the long-running TV show ‘Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma’. ‘Bhediya’ is the third film in producer Dinesh Vijan’s horror-comedy universe after ‘Stree’ and ‘Roohi’ — both starring Rajkummar Rao in the lead.

Ayushmann’s film ‘An Action Hero’ is the first release in December. Touted as a slick actioner with a sprinkle of satirical humour, ‘An Action Hero’ follows the story of an artist’s journey from behind to in front of the camera.

After giving out a failure in May with ‘Jayeshbhai Jordaar’, Bollywood’s livewire actor Ranveer Singh returns to the silver screen with Rohit Shetty’s ‘Cirkus’.

Hitting the screens on Christmas, ‘Cirkus’, which is officially adapted from Shakespeare’s play ‘The Comedy of Errors’, will release on December 23. The big-budget film stars Ranveer, Pooja Hegde, Jaqueline Fernandez, Varun Sharma and many more popular faces from Bollywood.

Bringing the curtains down for 2022, will be superstar Salman Khan’s ‘Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali’, which is a family drama. The film, which also stars Pooja Hegde, Venkatesh, Shehnaaz Gill and Raghav Juyal among many other, will light up the screens on December 30.
