India is home to one of the largest and most vibrant film industries in the world. The country is famous globally for its movies and songs. Citizens of several nations, irrespective of the relations between India and their country, recognise India for its films. Such is the prominence of tinsel town internationally!

Bollywood or the Hindi film industry occupies a pivotal position. However, some regional movies including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali and Punjabi films among others have also made it big abroad. India has 22 official languages and more than 19,500 dialects are spoken here as mother tongues. Hence, there are numerous varieties of films from different languages.

The Indian film industry generates nearly USD 2 billion a year. According to Britannica, Bollywood, Hindi-language sector of the Indian film industry began in Bombay (now Mumbai) in the 1930s and developed into an enormous film empire.

After early Indian experiments with silent films, in 1934, Bombay Talkies, launched by Himansu Rai, spearheaded the growth of Indian cinema. At the turn of the 21st Century, the Indian film industry – of which Bollywood remained the largest component – was producing as many as 1,000 feature films annually in all of India’s major languages and in a variety of cities. International audiences began to develop among south Asians in the United Kingdom and in the United States.

The Indian Media and Entertainment (M&E) industry is a sunrise sector for the economy and is making significant strides. Proving its resilience to the world, Indian M&E industry is on the cusp of a strong phase of growth, backed by rising consumer demand and improving advertising revenue. According to a FICCI-EY report, the advertising to GDP ratio is expected to reach 0.4 per cent by 2025 from 0.38 per cent in 2019.

According to a BCG report, India’s M&E industry is expected to grow between USD 55-70 billion by 2030. India’s digital advertising industry is expected to grow to Rs 23,673 crore (USD 3.09 billion) in 2022 from Rs 18,938 crore (USD 2.47 billion) in 2021.

Television would account for 40 per cent of the Indian media market in 2024, followed by print media (13 per cent), digital advertising (12 per cent), cinema (9 per cent), and the over-the-top (OTT) and gaming industries (8 per cent). The market is projected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17 per cent between 2020 and 2023.

According to India Brand Equity Foundation, within the M&E sector, animation, visual effects, gaming and comic (AVGC) sector is growing at a rate of 29 per cent, while the audio-visual sector and services is rising at the rate 25 per cent; is recognised as of one of the champion sectors by the Government of India. The AVGC sector is estimated to grow at 9 per cent to reach Rs. 3 lakh crore (USD 43.93 billion) by 2024, as stated by Piyush Goyal, India’s Minister of commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs & Food & Public Distribution and Textiles.

The music industry is expected to reach Rs. 23 billion (USD 330 million) by 2023, from Rs 15 billion (USD 210 million) in 2020 at a CAGR of 15 per cent between 2020 and 2023.

Several Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan are household names in various countries. Numerous Bollywood movies are also shot abroad, which has made the industry along with its stars popular globally.

Salman Khan Katrina Kaif-starrer spy-thriller ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ was shot in Istanbul and near the border with Syria and Iraq. Several more Bollywood movies were shot aboard and many in Middle East, including United Arab Emirates. Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif-starrer political thriller Phantom was shot in in Lebanon, including downtown Beirut, the nearby area of Khandaq Al Ghameeq and the mountain town of Kfardebian.

Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan-starrer Guru’s famous song ‘Mayya Mayya’ was picturised in Istanbul’s Nuruosmaniye Mosque.

A lot many Bengali and South Indian movies are shot in Thailand, Singapore and US among other destinations.

Indian movies are filmed across the world and several are shot in across European locations like the UK, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Spain, Greece and Amsterdam. Also, southeast Asian countries are another favourite destination for shooting. Some movies are also filmed in Australia.

Apart from Bollywood, at present, South Indian movies are topping the chart. In the recent 68th National Films Awards in the country, movies from south swept the award ceremony.

The jury had received around 305 movies from 30 languages. The films from the southern region of the country dominated the National Film Awards. As many as 19 top awards across various sections went to south Indian films. During last year’s ceremony, south Indian films won as many as 15 awards in various categories.

Some very famous south Indian movies of recent times which made it big in domestic market as well as abroad are ‘Bahubali’ and ‘RRR’.

Apart from the over-arching Bollywood all the other regional film industries also have a distinctive name. Similarly, Malayalam film industry in Kerala is known as Mollywood, film industry in Karnataka as Sandalwood, Assamese language film industry as Jollywood, Tamil film industry is called Kollywood and film industry in Odisha as Ollywood.

The future of Indian cinema will remain entwined with OTT platforms.

The story lines of Indian cinemas are undergoing a change. From love stories and family issue-based content, it is now moving towards other social issue-based stories and this trend is more perceptible in regional movies.

India’s entertainment industry foresees unique growth

The country’s total video games and exports revenue was Rs 16,200 crore in 2021, and is forecasted to reach Rs 37,535 crore by 2026, increasing at a 18.3 per cent CAGR…reports Asian Lite News

India’s entertainment and media (E&M) industry is expected to reach Rs 4,30,401 crore by 2026 at 8.8 per cent CAGR, according to a report on Thursday.

The PwC’s Global Entertainment and Media Outlook 2022-2026 report has shown substantial growth across India’s E&M industry segments such as OTT video, newspaper, advertisements, online games, cinema, music, among others.

“The Indian Media and Entertainment outlook for the next few years is quite unique. There is an exciting pace of growth of digital media and advertising led by the deeper penetration of Internet and mobile devices in our market,” said Rajib Basu, Partner & Leader – Entertainment & Media, PwC India in a statement.

“At the same time, traditional media will hold their steady growth rate over the next few years. We shall see a very different profile of media and entertainment related businesses and revenue models emerging in the digital space once we have the rollout of 5G,” he added.

The absence of public entertainment and additional time at home due to the Covid pandemic more than doubled the total OTT revenue in 2020 and 2021. While growth rates will slow, the market will still expand at an impressive 14.1 per cent CAGR to reach Rs 21,032 crore in 2026.

India will also see an increase in total newspaper revenue at 2.7 per cent CAGR from Rs 26,378 crore in 2021 to Rs 29,945 crore in 2026. The country is expected to leapfrog both France and the UK to become the fifth-biggest newspaper market by 2026, and will also be the only nation to grow total newspaper print revenue consistently across the five-year forecast period, the report said.

Further, the out-of-home (OOH) advertising market is also demonstrating one of the strongest comebacks globally and is predicted to grow at 12.57 per cent CAGR to reach Rs 5,562 crore in 2026.

While the TV advertising market is expected to expand at a 6.3 per cent CAGR to reach Rs 43,410 crore by 2026, Internet advertising market is set to increase at a 12.1 per cent CAGR to reach Rs 28,234 crore by 2026.

The country’s total video games and exports revenue was Rs 16,200 crore in 2021, and is forecasted to reach Rs 37,535 crore by 2026, increasing at a 18.3 per cent CAGR. While still a fairly small market for the country’s size and population, India is the third fastest-growing video games market in the world, after Turkey and Pakistan.

India is also the third-biggest market globally in terms of total number of cinema tickets sold, after China and the US in 2021 and is set to grow at the highest growth rate amongst all the segments at a staggering 38.3 per cent CAGR in the forecast period to reach Rs 16,198 crore by 2026.

The music, radio and podcast segment also grew at 18 per cent in 2021 and is set to grow at 9.8 per cent CAGR to reach Rs 11,536 crore by 2026.

Real-life molls and their sugar daddies

Despite a satisfactory beginning in the film world in 1994, Bedi was concerned about her career not really taking off in the sea of mega-heroines of that era dominating the film industry….reports Asian Lite News

As is well-known, the mafia has always been hugely attracted to the glamour of Bollywood and many of its female personalities, especially the young, upcoming and coldly ambitious actresses.

The film industry abounds with tales of how many underworld dons or their associates seemed to develop a ‘crush’ on wannabe or even established heroines, meeting them at parties, special screenings, foreign stage shows or even cricket matches.

And somehow, whatever be the fate of these girls’ films, they seemed to make a ‘superhit’ impression on the mafiosi and both sides used the dalliance for ‘mutual benefits’.

Old Bollywood films were synonymous with the likes of the baddy, Hamid Ali Khan, dreaded as the on-screen vicious don Ajit, a suave and suited-booted velvety smooth talker, who had a perpetual female hanger-on — a smashing, sexy but a stupid, moronic ‘Mona Darling’ — who became as popular as the villain himself.

Though there are many rumours of such real-life ‘Mona Darlings’ in Bollywood who share cosy relations with the mafiosi, some like Mandakini, Mamta Kulkarni and Monica Bedi even grabbed top headlines for their dark liaisons.

An attention-grabber actress was Monica Bedi, 47, who strayed far from her onscreen exploits to off-screen experiments with the mafia baddies like Abu Salem, tagged also as a terrorist and currently in jail for various offences.

Despite a satisfactory beginning in the film world in 1994, Bedi was concerned about her career not really taking off in the sea of mega-heroines of that era dominating the film industry.

This was where her reported ‘friendship’ with Salem helped her get some film assignments, but the good times didn’t last too long.

Subsequently, in 2002, she was nabbed along with Salem in Portugal, served a prison sentence for illegal entry to that country, was deported to India in November 2005 and was convicted in a fake passport case, before her release from jail in July 2007.

Since then, she has largely kept a low profile, but continues her acting career with appearances in Bigg Boss-2, a couple of reality shows, crooning in a spiritual music album, a Punjabi film, and even a tele-serial, though the old spark is missing.

Mamta Kulkarni, 59, was once considered a show-stopper who had a dream career in Tollywood in 1991 and then Bollywood (1992), acting with top stars like Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Govinda, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Raaj Kumar, Nana Patekar, Sunny Deol, and more.

After a row over her role in “China Gate” (1998), with allegations of mafia allegedly threatening the film-makers, Mamta’s sunset started and by 2002, she had packed up her bags and the final film.

She re-surfaced suddenly in the limelight when her liaisons with an international drug baron Vicky Goswami emerged amid reports that she had married him in 2013.

In June 2016, Mamta shot into global news after the Thane Police bust a massive Rs 2,000-crore narcotics racket and named her and Goswami as the prime accused, though she denied any involvement.

Not convinced, the Thane Police in June 2017 declared the couple as a ‘Proclaimed Offender’, raided her Mumbai home and the US Drugs Enforcement Administration entered the probe with Goswami being extradited from Kenya to the USA that year.

Though Mamta’s whereabouts are not clear, she is reportedly living in a Gulf nation, fighting legal battles in India and Kenya.

A discovery of the legendary Raj Kapoor, Mandakini, 50, became the heart-throb of millions as she cavorted under a waterfall in “Ram Teri Ganga Maili” (1985).

With a floundering career not moving much after a smooth take-off, in the early-1990s, pictures of her meeting the absconder don Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar in Dubai were splashed in the media back home.

Shaken, she confessed to the meeting but furiously rebuffed all suggestions of having any serious relationship with the don, and after she bowed out of Bollywood with her final film “Zordaar” (1996), the wagging tongues finally rested in peace.

Presently, Mandakini is said to be an exponent in Tibetan Yoga along with her husband Dr. K. T. Rinpoche-Thakur who runs a Tibetan medicine centre.

Besides these, there are some other old and new starlets whose names have been linked with the underworld, but the wary Bollywood folk speak in hushed tones of such ‘rumours’.

On occasion of World Liver Day on 19th April, Bollywood actor and humanitarian Mr. Sonu Sood has joined hands with Aster Volunteers, the global CSR programme of Aster DM Healthcare to encourage people to be aware of the alarming rate of rising liver disease cases in India and take proactive efforts to manage their liver health. Liver failure due to the unavailability of viable organ donors is one of the main causes of death from liver disease.

The initiative will also support 50 underprivileged children in need of liver transplants receive the needed care at Aster Hospitals’ Multi-Organ Transplant Centre located at Aster CMI and Aster RV Hospitals in Bangalore, and Aster Medcity and Aster MIMS Hospital Calicut in Kerala, India.

In India, liver disease claims 200,000 lives every year,[i] while only 1500-2000 transplants are conducted every year, 10% of which are for children.[ii] One of the key reasons is the inability to afford the high costs associated with transplant cases. In addition to this, limited universal health-care access and limited availability of viable donors for transplant are major challenges.

Dr. Azad Moopen, Founder Chairman and Managing Director of Aster DM Healthcare:,“Aster since its inception has always believed in giving back to the society. Through this programme and with our association with a humanitarian like Sonu Sood, we intend to raise awareness on organ donation so that more lives, particularly of children can be saved. In the initial phase, we will be supporting 50 children in need of liver transplants from underprivileged families at our hospitals. Apart from being a successful actor, Sonu Sood is a philanthropist at heart. We have all seen his work during the lockdown days and he continues to do so. At Aster, we have been inspired by his act of volunteerism and philanthropy which is something Aster Volunteers stands for – to invite people to volunteer and support the underprivileged and also empower them for a better future. With Mr. Sood’s support in raising awareness among people we are hoping to reach out to more and more underprivileged families and children whose lives can be saved.”

Bollywood Actor & Humanitarian Sonu Sood said: “I happened to come across some of the phenomenal work Aster DM Healthcare has done through Aster Volunteers. It is amazing to see the large number of philanthropic activities taken up by Aster Volunteers and I am glad to support the cause. Rising incidence of liver disease, increasing fatality due to unavailability of viable donors and inability of the needy to afford transplants are causes of concern. We need to collectively come together to raise awareness on the same and help the needy. I hope my voice reaches out to those families whose children are in line for liver transplants but haven’t been able to do so due to unaffordability. I hope the association with Aster Volunteers continues to grow and we work towards a healthier tomorrow.”

Aster Hospital’s newly launched Multi-Organ Transplant centre is a multi-institutional and multidisciplinary centre designed to provide the best transplant experience. The centre is officiated by a skilled team of surgeons with technical expertise in performing different types of transplants including Liver, Kidney, Heart, Lung, Cornea and Bone Marrow Transplant.
