Homage to Sam Manekshaw

Directed by Meghna Gulzar, ‘Sam Bahadur’ meticulously captures historical authenticity, promising a biopic that transcends the ordinary. The film is set to release in theatres on December 1, 2023…reports Asian Lite News

In a poignant tribute to the legendary Sam Manekshaw and the gallant soldiers of the Indian Army, Bollywood star Vicky Kaushal’s much-anticipated biopic, ‘Sam Bahadur,’ has unveiled a soul-stirring song titled ‘Banda.’ Sung by musical maestro Shankar Mahadevan, this musical gem seamlessly blends the spirit of military honor with the flair of Bollywood finesse.

The musical prowess of Shankar Mahadevan needs little introduction, resonating with echoes of his brilliant performance in the title track of ‘Lakshya,’ a similarity shared with the evocative ‘Banda.’ The song, exuding a rock signature, embraces a traditional Bollywood style, while surprisingly infusing elements of military decorum, creating a truly original composition.

Crafted by the dynamic and acclaimed trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the music impeccably complements Shankar Mahadevan’s vocals, striking a delicate balance in production. The distinctiveness of the soundtrack lies in its departure from the booming and stylistically pop-infused sounds prevalent in contemporary Bollywood productions. Instead, ‘Banda’ boasts a harmonious equilibrium, allowing the sound design to do justice to the song’s emotive depth.

Penned by the legendary Gulzar, the music video of ‘Banda’ unfolds as a poignant visual narrative, offering glimpses into the remarkable life of Sam Manekshaw. From his days in the Indian Military Academy and service during World War II to his tenure as Chief of Staff of the Indian Army and eventual Field Marshal, the video encapsulates the journey of a man whose legacy looms large.

Directed by Meghna Gulzar, ‘Sam Bahadur’ meticulously captures historical authenticity, promising a biopic that transcends the ordinary. The film is set to release in theaters on December 1, 2023.

Recreating an Iconic Moment

Director Meghna Gulzar, known for her meticulous attention to detail, goes the extra mile in ‘Sam Bahadur.’ Recreating an iconic photograph of Sam Manekshaw standing alongside Gorkha soldiers during the third India-Pakistan war (Bangladesh Liberation War, 1971), she spared no effort to achieve historical accuracy, a moment that left her teary-eyed upon its successful recreation.

This iconic image, captured during a pivotal moment in Indian history, symbolizes the triumph of the Indian Armed Forces during the Bangladesh Liberation War. Belonging to the Gorkha regiment, Sam Manekshaw, in the photograph, is believed to be issuing orders to prevent the harassment of Bangladeshi refugees, showcasing both leadership and empathy.

Meghna Gulzar shares her emotional journey behind recreating this historic photograph: “This is one of the most iconic photos of Sam Manekshaw, where he is seen meeting a Gorkha soldier amidst tall grass. I have had this picture as my wallpaper on my laptop for over 4-5 years, so suddenly when I had to recreate this exact scene, it was something very personal for me.”

She further adds, “On the second last day, I had picked the location to shoot, and it was very overwhelming to recreate that very image which you’ve had in front of you for so many years. We found the location, we found the grass, but there was always this doubt about how it will go. To suddenly see that shot on the monitor in front of me was very emotional. I think we came pretty close.”

‘Sam Bahadur’ is not merely a biopic on the legendary Field Marshal but a meticulous exploration of his life, upbringing, and military career. Spanning crucial historical events from the 1948 India-Pakistan war to the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, the film promises an immersive experience, starring Vicky Kaushal, Sanya Malhotra, Fatima Sana Sheikh, and others.

As the release date draws near, ‘Sam Bahadur’ stands poised to offer audiences a cinematic journey that transcends the boundaries of time, providing a profound insight into the life of one of India’s most celebrated military leaders.

Kriti Sanon Opens Up About Her Desires and Aspirations

On what’s next for her, Sanon says, “I’ve seen a lot of videos on vision boards and on manifesting that say that if you believe something can happen, it will…reports Asian Lite News

Kriti Sanon is riding the crest of the wave, thanks to her recent National Award win for best actress. In an introspective mood, she lets fashion glossyVogue India in on how an engineering graduate without industry connections got here, where she hopes to see herself five years from now and why she’s probably going to need another National Award-win to raise her manifestation game.

Sanon on how the Bollywood industry can become more accessible for outsiders, “The industry can become more accessible for outsiders if we start creating equal opportunities—if you’re launching someone from the industry, make sure you’re also giving space to someone who doesn’t belong but is probably more talented. Slowly, very slowly, the world is tilting towards talent and scripts rather than stars and big names.”

On what’s next for her, Sanon says, “I’ve seen a lot of videos on vision boards and on manifesting that say that if you believe something can happen, it will. But with me, I’ve realised that if I desperately chase a particular milestone, it just doesn’t happen. Maybe five years from now I will have bought a house for my parents, as my mother’s deepest desire is to have chai in the garden every day. Hopefully, I will also be waking up to sunlight, cuddles from my puppies…and perhaps even someone special.”

On understanding what she seeks in a partner and finding someone who pays attention to the little things, she says, “I have a real mama bear instinct for looking after the people I love. Something as insignificant as carrying a jacket while going to the movies in case I feel cold or thoughtfully ordering food when I come back home after working late can make a relationship feel so meaningful.”

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who arrived at the opening ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, shared how the cinema, storyline, characters and politics have evolved with time.

He said that from ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ to ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’, it’s been like a journey, “I have been here for the past 25 years and I am glad there is an evolution. I think from ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ to ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’, it has been like a journey. From one love story in 1998 to another in 2023. The characters have evolved, the journey has evolved, politics have evolved, the communication about family, love and gender equality has evolved I hope so and I am glad that the film received so much love.”

‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ was released on July 28, 2023. The film emerged as a hit at the box office. It crossed Rs 150 crore mark in India.

The film revolves around Rocky Randhawa (Ranveer), a Punjabi businessman, and Rani Chatterjee (Alia Bhatt), a Bengali journalist, who fall in love despite their differences and family objections. They decide to live with each other’s families for three months before getting married.

Veteran stars Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi and Jaya Bachchan also starred in Karan Johar’s directorial.

On the film’s success, Karan penned an emotional note on Instagram. He wrote, “Prior to the release of this film, I felt that at any point of time I would need an IV drip and was near collapse!! The question I asked myself was – is it the long 7 year gap? Or the anxiety built over the last 3 years. Or the fact that we live in an ambiguous box office time. Whatever the real reason is – I was a bonafide mess! But the Friday, 28th of July, I felt nothing but gratitude, validation and sheer joy. This film is truly a product of team energy & love.”

He expressed gratitude to the writers, dress designers and musicians of the film and wrote, “I want to first express my deepest gratitude to the writing forces of this film – Shashank Khaitan & Sumit Roy, who guided me through the narrative journey of our film. Special mention to Ishita Moitra, who brought so much humour, introspection and cinema drama to the screenplay and crackling dialogues. This entire writing process would not have been possible without the creative governance & brilliance of Somen Mishra.”

“To my best friend and the couture maverick, Manish Malhotra and to the supremely talented Eka Lakhani for matching the sari to Gucci with equal elan! Manush Nandan – for painting every frame so so beautifully. The maestro editor, Nitin Baid for keeping me in check! The aesthetic force and the best hug in town – Amrita. To Sohel & Debu Da, for taking us to the finish line with sheer expertise. To my absolute favourite Pritam da and his entire team – for creating and weaving musical magic that enhanced every scene of the film. To Amitabh Bhattacharya for his genius mind!!” he added.

‘Aadujeevitham’ : A Glimpse of the Epic Survivor

Making his harrowing escape in the barren and hot deserts of Arabia, Najeeb manages to make his escape from his captors, killing some in the process…reports Asian Lite News

Malayalam star Privthviraj Sukumuran’s upcoming action-survival-drama-epic film ‘Aadujeevitham’ has released its first poster with the actor donning a very theatrical, almost tribal like survivor look. With the actor looking absolutely epic, the poster only hypes the expectations from the film while revealing absolutely nothing.

In the poster, Prithviraj plays the role of the character Najeeb Muhammad and is surrounded by a bunch of goats amidst the lights of the blazing sun. Seemingly content to die or rather waiting to kill, the actor looks absolutely lethal in this new avatar.

The poster alone is enough to drive home the tone of the film, showcasing it to be a narrative-wise very serious and brooding kind of drama. Being surrounded by goats all around with eyes closed, it sure looks like the superstar is waiting to kill someone.

‘Aadujeevitham’, titled ‘The Goat Life’ in English, is an adaptation of the 2008 Malayalam novel of the same name which sees a man called Najeeb Muhammad, a Malayalee immigrant and worker who is thrust into slavery into Saudi Arabia as a goatherd.

The book focuses on Najeeb, who much like most immigrant workers dreams of working in the Persian Gulf states and earning enough money to send back home. But, he achieves his dream only to be propelled by a series of incidents into a slavelike existence herding goats in the middle of the Saudi desert.

Making his harrowing escape in the barren and hot deserts of Arabia, Najeeb manages to make his escape from his captors, killing some in the process.

A joint production, the movie is directed by Blessy and features music by A.R Rahman, and will release sometime in 2024.

Sonam’s Personal Style Touch in ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’

Sonam said that she has never followed any handbook on fashion…reports Asian Lite News

Actress Sonam Kapoor, who is known for her fashion sense, spoke about when she styled herself in her film ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’.

Sonam said: “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo was a film which reached the length and breadth of India. It was one of my films which worked very, very well and Anamika had done all the clothes that I had worn. I had styled myself in the film; the western wear was what I had picked up, but all my Indian wear was designed by Anamika Khanna.”

Sonam added: “I remember going to a couple of weddings and I saw a lot of girls wearing the same clothes, and I thought that was wonderful.”

“I realised that is the power of cinema. I didn’t understand it initially and Sooraj ji (Barjatya) told me that there was this green sari that Madhuri (Dixit) had worn in one of his films and the lilac and yellow sari which Amrita (Rao) had worn and these outfits had really worked.”

She further added: “Sooraj ji was like, ‘these are the colours that I want, and you will see that it will work’. In my late 20’s, a lot of my friends were getting married at that time and I was going for these weddings and I saw a lot of them wearing these same Anamika outfits that I wore in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and I found that so amazing and felt so happy and proud!”

Sonam said that she has never followed any handbook on fashion.

“I am a Gemini, so every time I wake up in the morning, I feel I have a different mood everyday and I am a different person everyday. And I think the one way we can express ourselves is through what we wear. I feel, like anybody you see with whatever they wear, we can tell who they are, as people. It is one form of expression,” she concluded.

A Peek into Her Free Time

Sonam Kapoor has talked about what she does in her free time when she is not working or shooting.

Sonam is a voracious reader and she reveals how her love for books has kept her creatively satiated since her childhood.

Sonam said: “Books transport us to a world of imagination. When I am not shooting or working, I am constantly reading and getting sucked into a world where everything is possible!”

Sonam loves when a good book turns into a great cinematic adaptation.

She said: “Some of my most favourite movies are adaptations of brilliant books. The love I have for books and cinema is in equal measure and it’s amazing when good books turn into good movies.”

The actress feels books provide great material for writers to harness brilliant plots for cinema.

“Books provide the perfect source material for developing engrossing and entertaining screen content. I’ve always believed that a good story will be loved by all and also transcend all boundaries,” said the actress.

On the work front, Sonam was recently seen in ‘Blind’, a crime thriller film directed by Shome Makhija.

The film features Sonam in a leading role with Purab Kohli, Vinay Pathak and Lillete Dubey in supporting roles.

‘Blind’, a remake of the 2011 Korean film of the same name, centres around a blind police officer in search of a serial killer.

‘Bagha Jatin’ Captivates Audiences with Its Gripping Trailer

The sets are also done extremely well showcasing a dedication to making the whole environment look exactly like the early 1900’s British India…reports Asian Lite News

Apart from South Indian cinema, Bengali cinema too seems to be going pan-Indian as Bengali cinema superstar Dev’s much anticipated film, the biopic ‘Bagha Jatin’ based on the revolutionary freedom fighter has released its Hindi trailer.

Featuring some state-of-the-art quality production, the trailer is visually stunning and has some very emotional and well written dialogues. In more ways than one, ‘Bagha Jatin’ seems to have a very identical similarity with the Telugu blockbuster film ‘RRR’ which is also combined with some flavour of the Sunny Deol-starrer-blockbuster film ‘Gadar 2’.

The trailer kicks off with Bagha Jatin’ son telling him that he too wants to kill a tiger just like his father did. However, smiling at him, the fighter says that it was a mistake to do so and he had little choice as it is wrong to kill an animal.

The trailer then shows several scenes ranging from personal family drama to gathering partners, division of Bengal, and training with weapons, other shots include bloody scenes of British brutality, and the undying patriotism as well as the dark end that the legendary freedom fighter knew awaited him.

With some very high production quality, the film has some brilliant practical effects as well as VFX which features polished gun fights, violence, and much like ‘RRR’, a brilliantly designed CGI tiger.

The sets are also done extremely well showcasing a dedication to making the whole environment look exactly like the early 1900’s British India.

Dev and his co-stars have all done some great acting and delivered some very hard-hitting dialogues, such as upon addressing his wife’s question as to why only Bagha Jatin must sacrifice himself, he says, “The path that I have chosen can only lead to death. But you all have your whole lives to live.”

Other some very poignant dialogues include, “There is no point to a life which can’t be used for the nation” which is said by the freedom fighter Kshudiram Bose, and the ending line where while fighting the British, Bagha Jatin states, “When we die, then our motherland will awaken.”

Directed by Arun Roy, ‘Bagha Jatin’ focuses on the life of the titular protagonist who was born Jatindranath Mukherjee. As he had killed a tiger upon being chased by one, the man earned his legendary nickname ‘Bagha’ which in Bangla means tiger.

Other aspects that the movie aims to cover are his spiritualism which was influenced by the ideologies of Swami Vivekananda, as well as his own ideologies of armed revolution.

The real life Bagha Jatin was born in 1876 in the Nadia district of what was back then United Bengal and in present day is part of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

Jatindranath Mukherjee had received support from the German Crown Prince during World War I, who gave him a whole consignment of weapons and ammunition.

Motivated by a revolutionary mindset and striving to create an Independent India, and during the War, Bagha Jatin was targeting British lines to cut off their access points and ambushing them.

Though preparing to create a full armed revolution through his dacoit activities, Bagha Jatin and his team’s conspiracy was leaked out to British intelligence who blocked the exit points from Noakhali and Chittagong to block their escape to Odisha or Assam.

In the forests of Mayurbhanj in Odisha, a 75-minute gun battle ensued on October 9, 1915 which killed several British Indian police officers as well as one of Bagha’s associates. Himself mortally wounded, Bhaga Jatin died of his wounds on October 10, 1915.

‘Bagha Jatin’ brings to the big screen yet another one of the several hundred untold stories of various freedom fighters from different regions of India, who today find little mention in history books.

The movie stars Dev, Sreeja Dutta, Sudipta Chakraborty, Samiul Alam, Sajal Mondal, Kallol D, Rohaan Bhattacharjee, Carl A. Harte, and Alexandra Taylor. The movie will release in both Bangla and Hindi, with the former hitting theatres on October 19, and the latter coming out on October 20, 2023.
