MENTAL HEALTH: NHS OFFERS TALKING THERAPIES

With 3 in 5 South Asians worried about their mental health, new poll shows that seeking professional support can make a difference. The NHS is encouraging anyone struggling with feelings of depression, or anxiety such as excessive worry, panic attacks, social anxiety, post-traumatic stress, or obsessions and compulsions, to seek help through NHS Talking Therapies services

A new poll by NHS England has found that over 3 in 5 (64%) South Asians have felt concerned about their mental health in the last year*. In fact, over 2 in 5 (42%) of those asked, said that they have experienced depression, and just under 3 in 10 (29%) have experienced generalised anxiety disorder.

However, the responses also reveal that just under two thirds (65%) of South Asians who have accessed professional help for an anxiety disorder or depression said they saw an improvement in their mental health**.

The NHS is encouraging anyone struggling with feelings of depression, or anxiety such as excessive worry, panic attacks, social anxiety, post-traumatic stress, or obsessions and compulsions, to seek help through NHS Talking Therapies services. These are effective, confidential and free treatments delivered by trained clinicians, online, on the phone, or in person. Anyone struggling with feelings of depression or anxiety can seek help through an NHS Talking Therapies service and get back on track.

Taking care of your mental health is a vital part of overall health, but it is something that can sometimes be a struggle to talk about with family and friends – and this can be a particular issue for men in the community. Talking Therapies can offer the opportunity to discuss your difficulties with someone who you don’t know, providing a welcome outlet for many people.

Ummar Sadique, Cognitive Behavioural Therapist

Ummar Sadique, Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, says: “As an NHS accredited Talking Therapist, I notice that men from the community are far less likely to seek help from therapy than women are. I think it’s an ingrained part of our culture, but it’s something I’d really like to see changing. With Talking Therapies you have the opportunity to talk to someone completely independent, and in confidence, so you don’t have to be embarrassed about opening up. There are more people using the service than you may think. As a community we need to start seeing mental health as an essential part of our overall health. You’d go to see a doctor or a specialist if you had stomach pains, for example, and it shouldn’t be any different if your mental health is suffering.”

Following some traumatic experiences in her life, Harmeet referred herself for cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) through NHS Talking Therapies. She has since gone back to the service several times and regularly uses the methods that she has learned from it, to help her with day-to-day challenges.

Harmeet says: “Talking Therapies helped pull me out of the dark hole I found myself in. By reaching out for help, especially to someone who is independent and totally non-judgmental, I was able to share what felt heavy and release the weight I had been carrying. I can’t shout about it enough – my mental health is better than ever before.”

When asked in the survey, over half (56%) of South Asians did not know that they could refer themselves to NHS Talking Therapies online to access treatment for anxiety and depression***.

You don’t need to have a diagnosed mental health problem to refer yourself to an NHS Talking Therapies service, and you can choose whether to refer yourself online, or to ask your GP to refer you. For those whose first language is not English, talking therapies can be delivered through multi-lingual therapists or through confidential interpreters. The service is available for anyone over 18 who is registered with a GP.

Kiran Bal, HICBT Therapist, says: “If you think you may be struggling with depression or anxiety, NHS Talking Therapies may be able to help, it’s a free and confidential service. Talking therapies is tailored to your specific needs, and you can either refer yourself to the service or discuss it with your GP first – whichever feels more comfortable for you. As therapists, we are specifically trained in offering evidence-based treatment to support people with their mental health difficulties, and I have seen first-hand the benefits of this service for many of my patients”

NHS Talking Therapies can help provide support and treatment for common mental health problems, such as:

• feeling anxious

• finding it hard to cope with work, life or relationships

• struggling with flashbacks or nightmares about upsetting events from your past

Tackling the Breast Cancer Challenge

Dr. Rajanigandha Tudu, Medical Oncologist, Ranchi Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, supported by Tata Trusts explains three fundamental aspects of breast self-examination…reports Asian Lite News

While India is grappling with a growing cancer incidence rate, we have also been at the forefront of several innovations in cancer care and treatment. The critical solution to overcoming the challenges posed by this disease, however, lies in keeping our communities informed about its symptoms.

Currently, 1.4 million (14 lakh) new cancer cases are detected each year and projections are that it will increase to 2 million (20 lakh) by 2040. It is also important to note that in contrast to the global landscape, where 70% of cancers are detected early, India presents a unique scenario, with 70% of cases diagnosed at an advanced stage. Particularly concerning is the situation of breast cancer. Even though it is easily screenable, nearly 60% of cases in India are diagnosed at stage III or IV. Societal taboos often stifle open conversations about women’s health, contributing to delayed diagnosis.

To this end, a pivotal step in detecting breast cancer early lies in empowering women with information to recognize and address any irregularities in their breasts through regular self-examinations. Lumps can be the initial sign of breast cancer and can be easily detected through a self-breast exam.

While not all lumps are cancerous, it is essential to rule out the possibility through clinical screening.

Dr. Rajanigandha Tudu, Medical Oncologist, Ranchi Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, supported by Tata Trusts explains three fundamental aspects of breast self-examination:

Consistency Check: Feel for the general size and shape consistency of both breasts

Skin Examination: Look for puckering or dimpling on the skin

Nipple Inspection: Inspect for any discharge from the nipples

Here’s how you can self-examine your breasts:

Step 1: Use the pads of your fingers (not the tips) and apply varying pressure – light, medium, firm –  to feel the breast tissues.

Step 2: Place your right hand on the back of your head and use the three middle fingers of your left hand to gently press down on the right breast.

Step 3: Start navigating at the outer edges of your breast and move in a circular motion toward the nipple. Cover the entire breast in this motion and then move from the collarbone to the top of the abdomen

Step 4: Feel the breast tissue for any abnormalities – lumps, thickening, or changes in texture

Step 5: Gently squeeze the nipple to check for discharge and also check for changes in the appearance or direction of the nipples

Step 6: Repeat the process for the left breast

Undertaking a breast self-examination is more than just a routine; it is a promise to prioritize your well-being as well as an essential step in understanding the symptoms of a disease that can be fatal, if not detected early. Promptly responding to any changes, lumps, or irregularities that you come across during self-examination is crucial. It’s a monthly proactive step that should be followed by a clinical breast examination every three years, thereby ensuring early and timely detection.

Remember, every conversation and every self-examination has the potential to be life-saving.

Common Mistakes to Avoid During Cold and Flu Season

Ample sleep is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, particularly when combating a sinus infection. Ensuring a minimum of eight hours of sleep supports your immune system in its battle against the infection. Additionally, resting during the day and conserving energy aids in a quicker recovery from sinus infections…reports Dr. Babina N.M.

Sinus infections, often triggered by preceding illnesses such as the cold or flu, can be both disruptive and persistent. While these infections typically run their course in about a week, some individuals experience prolonged and intensified sinus issues, indicating chronic sinusitis. Seeking timely consultation with a sinus specialist becomes crucial in such cases. Complicating matters, common mistakes made during a sinus infection can exacerbate the condition. As the cold and flu season approaches, sinusitis becomes a prevalent concern for both adults and children, leading to sinus inflammation. Fortunately, natural remedies offer relief; however, it is essential to navigate self-care treatments cautiously, avoiding certain practices and approaching others with care. In this article, we explore the mistakes that can worsen sinus issues and provide guidance on managing them naturally.

Common Mistakes that Aggravate Sinus Infections

Common mistakes during sinus infections can inadvertently exacerbate symptoms and prolong discomfort. It’s crucial to be aware of these pitfalls to ensure effective self-care during sinusitis.

Not Using a Humidifier

Sinus infections often worsen in colder seasons when the air becomes dry. Winter’s chilly and dry conditions not only impact the skin but also lead to the drying out of nasal passages, exacerbating sinus discomfort. To address this, consider using a humidifier or vaporizer to add moisture to the air. This helps prevent your sinuses from becoming excessively dry and irritated, providing relief from discomfort.

Excessive Use of Nasal Spray

While over-the-counter nasal sprays provide temporary relief from sinus infection pressure, prolonged and improper usage can have adverse effects. The main chemical in these sprays may contribute to worsening sinus infections. If your sinus infection persists beyond a week, it is crucial to consult with an ENT specialist to ensure appropriate management.

Insufficient Sleep

Ample sleep is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, particularly when combating a sinus infection. Ensuring a minimum of eight hours of sleep supports your immune system in its battle against the infection. Additionally, resting during the day and conserving energy aids in a quicker recovery from sinus infections.

Inadequate Hydration

Staying well-hydrated is crucial when dealing with a sinus infection. Increased water intake supports mucus production, helping to keep the mucus thin and easier to expel. Proper hydration during a sinus infection contributes to relieving congestion and facilitating better breathing.

Minimize Sinus Irritants

Sinus discomfort isn’t solely linked to dry air; various factors like seasonal allergies, fragrances, smoke, and airborne particles can exacerbate sinus issues, particularly during an infection. While you can’t control all environmental factors, ceasing the use of perfumes or quitting smoking can lead to noticeable relief. The toxins in smoke can aggravate sinusitis, making it crucial to minimize exposure for improved sinus health.

Effective Home Remedies for Sinusitis Relief

Sinusitis can often be alleviated using natural remedies, some of which might be familiar advice passed down through generations. These approaches work to calm irritated sinus passages, promoting better mucus flow and providing relief from nasal congestion.

Relieve Sinus Congestion with Steam

One of the most effective at-home remedies for sinus infections involves warming and moisturizing your sinus passageways. Inhaling steam is a soothing method that clears your sinuses.

Simply stand in the shower or sit in the bathroom while the shower is running. Alternatively, place a warm washcloth over your nose and cheeks as you lie on your bed.

For a potent steam treatment, boil a pot of water, remove it from the heat, and put a towel over your head. Bend over the pot to inhale the steam, keeping your eyes closed and maintaining a safe distance from the hot water. As the liquid cools, adjust your proximity for comfort.

Enhance the experience by adding a drop or two of essential oils; eucalyptus oil can aid in nasal decongestion, while lavender or chamomile essential oil brings a calming effect.

Yoga to Drain Mucus

If you find yourself amid a sinus infection, certain supported yoga poses can provide relief without exerting undue pressure on your sinuses. Poses like Legs Up the Wall (Viparita Karani) and Supported Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana) are beneficial. These poses promote gentle inversion, helping to drain mucus from the sinus passageways and potentially alleviating discomfort associated with sinusitis. Engage in these poses mindfully and listen to your body for a soothing experience during a sinus infection.

Nasal Irrigation for Relief

To alleviate symptoms and potentially prevent sinus infections, consider nasal irrigation as a beneficial method. Nasal irrigation involves using a saltwater solution to flush out germs and congested mucus from the sinus passages. It’s also known as nasal wash, nasal douche, or lavage, and often involves a tool like a neti pot.

Studies, including one featured in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, suggest that irrigation can improve sinus-related symptoms. However, it’s crucial to exercise caution by using distilled or sterile water to avoid the rare risk of introducing parasites into the sinus passageways. If using tap water, ensure it’s sterilized by boiling for 3 to 5 minutes and then cooling before nasal irrigation.

Eat More Vegetables and Fruits

Enhance your sinus health naturally by incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your diet. These nutrient-rich foods, such as onions, apples, green tea, and red wine, contain powerful antioxidants like quercetin. This natural plant component serves as an antioxidant, and specifically for sinus issues, it has the remarkable ability to stabilize cells that release histamine.

Histamine is the chemical responsible for stimulating mucus secretion in the sinuses. By incorporating quercetin-rich foods into your meals, you can potentially help manage sinus problems by regulating histamine release and promoting a healthier sinus environment.

Embrace a Dairy-Free Lifestyle

In some individuals, the proteins present in dairy products, namely casein and whey, might act as potential triggers for allergies and excessive mucus production, potentially exacerbating sinus issues. If you experience recurrent sinusitis, consider eliminating all dairy from your diet to observe if it positively impacts your condition. Fortunately, a variety of delicious dairy alternatives, such as cashews, almonds, hemp, and oat milk products, are readily available.

Final Words

As winter approaches, sinus infections can be challenging. It’s essential to be mindful of your sinus health. By adopting these simple natural strategies, you can enhance your well-being during the colder months and promote sinus comfort.

Sunak admits failure to cut NHS waiting lists

Sunak accepted a £1,000 bet with Piers Morgan that deportation flights to Rwanda would take place before the next general election…reports Asian Lite News

Rishi Sunak has acknowledged that he has failed to keep his promise to cut healthcare waiting lists. The prime minister made doing so one of the key commitments on which his own competence would be judged when taking office. But, with the situation in England actually worsening by many measures, the grand pledge was downgraded late last year, before Sunak then acknowledged failure on Monday.

“We have not made enough progress,” Sunak said when asked about his commitment to cut NHS waiting lists during an interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV. Asked if that meant he had failed, the prime minister replied: “Yes, we have.”

The shadow heath secretary, Wes Streeting, said: “Rishi Sunak has finally admitted what has been blatantly obvious to everyone else for years – the Conservatives have failed on the NHS.

“Where Sunak has failed, Labour will succeed in getting the NHS back on its feet. We did it before and we will do it again. We will cut waiting lists with 2 million more evening and weekend appointments, paid for by abolishing the non-dom tax status.”

In October, it emerged that the number of people waiting longer than 18 months for NHS treatment in England was growing. Data analysed by PA Media last month suggested that, despite recent decreases in the waiting list in England, it was still higher than when Sunak’s pledge was made.

The list stood at 7.21m outstanding treatments in January 2023. In November, NHS England figures showed 7.61m treatments were yet to be carried out.

NHS workers, many of whom have seen substantial pay cuts in real terms under Conservative governments, have been exercising their right to take industrial action to secure better terms.

Unions have consistently said ministers could avoid strikes by offering better pay deals. And government ministers have acknowledged privately they would end up needing to do so despite having spent months publicly insisting they would take no such step.

Health leaders warned Sunak in December that allowing the industrial dispute to grind on would make delivering his pledge all but impossible. Nevertheless, Sunak sought to blame striking workers for his failure.

Asked on Monday by TalkTV about the increased waiting lists in England, Sunak replied: “Yes, and we all know the reasons for that. And what I would say to people is: look, we have invested record amounts in the NHS: more doctors, more nurses, more scanners. All these things mean that the NHS is doing more today than it ever has been. But industrial action has had an impact.”

Morgan also told Sunak about his 79-year-old mother’s experience with NHS care three months ago after she had a heart attack. The broadcaster said that, despite being driven to the hospital in an ambulance, his mother waited on a trolley in an A&E corridor for nearly seven hours before being seen, in a scene she compared to a “war zone”.

The prime minister said the account was “shocking” and that performance in A&E and with ambulance waiting times were “not good enough”.

However, he denied the Tories had failed the NHS since 2010, citing the backlog created by the coronavirus pandemic. “We can’t escape that. When you shut down the country in the NHS for the best part of two years, that has had an impact on everything since then. And we just have to recognise that reality,” he said.

Also during the interview, Sunak accepted a £1,000 bet with Morgan that deportation flights to Rwanda would take place before the next general election, which is expected in the autumn.

He has previously set the target of sending people who arrive in the UK via unauthorised routes, including those crossing the Channel in small boats, to the east African country by the spring.

The UK has paid Rwanda £240m under Sunak’s plan to “stop the boats” – another of his five key pledges – and ministers expect to pay an additional £50m next year. But no one has yet been removed due to legal challenges that resulted in the supreme court last year finding the scheme unlawful.

Sunak is trying to revive the policy by passing legislation deeming Rwanda a safe country and ratifying a new treaty with Kigali. The Rwanda bill is making its way through the House of Lords.

After shaking hands with Morgan on the terms of the Rwanda bet, Sunak said: “I want to get the people on the plane. I am working incredibly hard to get the people on the planes.”

Breathing for Balance

By allowing individuals to focus on their breathing, Pranayama helps in alleviating stress and anxiety. With this, one can nurture a sense of inner calmness and develop resilience to deal with life’s challenges…writes Raman Mittal

The day-to-day demands of the contemporary world can take a toll on our mental health, causing stress, anxiety, and depression. When left unaddressed, these conditions can lead to a severe impact on our general well-being.

While experts suggest a host of measures to mitigate mental health challenges, Pranayama, or Yogic Breathing, has carved a distinctive reputation for its significant positive effects on mental health. The ancient practice of Pranayama allows individuals to connect more deeply with their breath and witness an elevated sense of inner peace and relaxation.

Let us further delve deeper into the unprecedented advantages of integrating Pranayama into our daily lives.

Understanding Pranayama

Pranayama encompasses a range of approaches to help individuals control their breath and enhance their overall well-being. The practice is often paired with meditation and different yoga postures. Its fundamental principle is that the breath acts as a bridge between the mind and body, harmonising the two. By controlling their breath, individuals can accomplish a more profound sense of calm and balance in their lives.

Mental health benefits of Pranayama

Numerous scientific researches across the globe have validated the significant effect of Pranayama on mental health, including-:

Lowered stress

By allowing individuals to focus on their breathing, Pranayama helps in alleviating stress and anxiety. With this, one can nurture a sense of inner calmness and develop resilience to deal with life’s challenges.

Elevated mood

Pranayama is also highly recognised for its ability to uplift mood and mitigate the symptoms of depression. It fosters an optimistic environment, replacing negative beliefs and emotions with positivity and happiness, improving overall mental well-being.

Improved focus

Pranayama can be a vital tool for improving concentration and focus in today’s world of endless distractions. By training the mind to focus on the present moment, allows practitioners to perform their daily tasks with improved efficiency and precision. Thus, by making it a regular part of their routine, individuals can achieve higher productivity in all areas of their lives.

Enhanced self-awareness

Regularly practising Pranayama can also help in developing an increased sense of self-awareness. This heightened self-awareness enables us to comprehend our thoughts and emotions better, leading to personal growth and self-improvement.

A few techniques of Pranayama that can be easily incorporated into our daily routine:

Bhramari: The Bhramari Pranayama method involves producing a humming sound while inhaling and exhaling through the nose. This popular technique is known to relieve stress and promote a feeling of calmness.

Nadi Shodhana: This technique involves breathing rhythmically via alternating nostrils, allowing individuals to accomplish inner balance and lower stress levels. Additionally, the alternating flow of air via the left and right nostrils promotes the alignment of vital energies, cultivating a sense of tranquillity.

Kapalbhati: Practising Kapalbhati involves rapid and strong inhales and exhales via the nose. This exercise can boost focus and concentration, making it an ideal tool for individuals aiming to bolster mental clarity and productivity.

Embracing Pranayama as a beginner

To begin practising Pranayama, finding a quiet and comfortable place to sit or lie down is crucial. Once you have located your spot, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to help relax and calm your mind. Then, choose a Pranayama exercise that resonates with you and start practising. It is essential to listen to your body and avoid pushing yourself too much.

Busting Myths and Promoting Awareness on Glaucoma

Panic should not set in if symptoms appear. Surgical and laser procedures are available to slow down the disease when medications prove insufficient. Consulting an expert ophthalmologist can lead to suitable treatments and prevent irreversible blindness…writes Dr. Kamala Subramanian

Glaucoma comprises a set of eye disorder characterized by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), leading to damage of the optic nerves which are responsible for transmitting visual signals to the brain. This condition can result in vision loss, and it can affect individuals of any age, with many remaining unaware of its presence. Early detection is crucial to prevent irreversible blindness. Currently, Glaucoma stands as a significant global cause of vision impairment, impacting 80 million people and contributing to 12.3 percent of worldwide blindness. In India, the prevalence is noteworthy, affecting 12 million individuals, with an estimated 40-50 percent of cases going undetected.

The prevailing myths surrounding glaucoma have panicked several people. It is decisive to dispel misinformation about this silent eye condition, which poses a threat to vision without displaying early warning signs. Here, we debunk some common myths around glaucoma, offering clarity and promoting proactive eye care.

Myth 1: Glaucoma derives only from a strong family history

Fact: Contrary to common perception, glaucoma is not solely tied to genetic factors. While a family history of glaucoma can elevate an individual’s risk, it’s essential to acknowledge that other factors also play substantial roles in the onset of this eye condition. Extended use of steroids for asthma, medications for rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune diseases, skin conditions, and a history of eye injuries can also contribute to the development of glaucoma.

Myth 2: No Alternatives if medications fail

Fact: Panic should not set in if symptoms appear. Surgical and laser procedures are available to slow down the disease when medications prove insufficient. Consulting an expert ophthalmologist can lead to suitable treatments and prevent irreversible blindness.

Myth 3: Glaucoma occurs only if you have elevated intraocular pressure (IOP)

Fact: Glaucoma results from optic nerve damage, not just high IOP. The pressure elevation happens due to the buildup of aqueous humor, causing damage to the optic nerve.

Myth 4: People with good eye sight won’t develop glaucoma

Fact: Glaucoma can occur to anyone, even if you have good eyesight. It is not that if you have a perfect vision, you won’t develop Glaucoma because people won’t notice symptoms until the disease has reached moderate or advanced stages.

Myth 5Glaucoma can be cured with dietary modification

Fact: Glaucoma cannot be cured with dietary modifications alone. While a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, is beneficial for overall well-being, it cannot replace medical treatment for glaucoma.

Myth 6: Glaucoma affects only the elderly

Fact: Glaucoma can affect individuals aged 20 to 50 and even infants due to irregular ocular development. It can affect people of all ages even in newborns. Definitely the open angle glaucoma occurs mostly in older people. Some babies develop congenital glaucoma while other children have other eye diseases that can lead to secondary glaucoma. There are different types of glaucoma that affect different age groups.

Myth 7: Unattended cataract can cause glaucoma &irreversible vision loss

Fact: Cataracts and glaucoma are distinct conditions. Cataracts result from the clouding of the eye’s lens, causing vision issues. Both share common risk factors, but one doesn’t transform into the other. Cataracts are treatable and occur as a resulting of getting old usually sometimes after the age of 40. Whereas Glaucoma can occur irrespective of age and the people with diabetes have higher risk of developing glaucoma.

Myth 8: Excessive Screen Time Raises Glaucoma Risk

Fact: There’s no scientific evidence linking excess screen time to glaucoma. However, myopia (nearsightedness) patients spending extended periods at screens may be at risk.

In summary, clarifying the difference between misconceptions and realities about glaucoma is crucial for maintaining optimal eye health. Increasing awareness about the potential risk factors and symptoms of glaucoma is vital for early detection and successful management. Regular eye examinations and the promotion of proactive measures are necessary to protect vision and prevent irreversible damage associated with glaucoma. If there is a significant family history of glaucoma, it is imperative for the next generation to undergo comprehensive glaucoma testing in addition to routine screenings.

Lifestyle Choices in the Fight Cervical Cancer

A well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains contributes significantly to overall health and may reduce the risk of cervical cancer…writes Dr Kalpana Kothari

If you’re dealing with cervical cancer, it’s important to know that the disease often starts slowly, with changes in cervix cells called dysplasia. Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that originates in the cells of the cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus or womb. The cervix connects the uterus to the vagina. Cervical cancer typically develops slowly over many years and often begins with the presence of pre-cancerous changes, known as dysplasia, in the cells on the cervix.

The primary cause of cervical cancer is persistent infection with certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV). One of the most effective preventive measures against cervical cancer is vaccination. The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, given in early adolescence, protects against the most common types of HPV, which is a leading cause of cervical cancer. Encouraging vaccination for both boys and girls is vital in creating herd immunity and reducing the overall prevalence of HPV.

Cervical cancer is a major health concern worldwide, affecting women of all ages. However, the good news is that many cases of cervical cancer are preventable through a combination of vaccination, regular screenings, and adopting a healthy lifestyle. Here we will know the role that lifestyle choices and healthy habits play in preventing cervical cancer.

Regular Screenings: Early Detection Saves Lives

Regular cervical screenings, such as Pap smears and HPV tests, are essential for the early detection of abnormalities that may lead to cervical cancer. These screenings can identify precancerous changes in the cervix, allowing for prompt intervention and treatment. Women should adhere to the recommended screening schedules, ensuring that any potential issues are detected early when they are most treatable.

Adopting a Healthy Diet

A well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains contributes significantly to overall health and may reduce the risk of cervical cancer. Antioxidants and vitamins found in these foods support the body’s immune system, helping it fight off infections, including those caused by HPV. Additionally, maintaining a healthy weight through proper diet and regular exercise is linked to a lower risk of developing cervical cancer.

Tobacco Cessation: A Crucial Step

Tobacco use is a known risk factor for cervical cancer. Smoking not only weakens the immune system but also increases the likelihood of persistent HPV infection. Women who smoke are more likely to develop cervical cancer than non-smokers. Quitting smoking is a crucial step towards reducing the risk of cervical cancer and improving overall health.

Safe Sex Practices: Protecting Against HPV

Practicing safe sex is an important aspect of cervical cancer prevention. HPV is primarily transmitted through sexual contact, and using barrier methods, such as condoms, can reduce the risk of infection. Open communication with sexual partners about sexual health and getting regular screenings are integral components of a comprehensive preventive strategy.

Stress Management: Supporting Immune Function

Chronic stress can weaken the immune system, making the body more susceptible to infections, including HPV. Adopting stress-reducing techniques such as yoga, meditation, and mindfulness can contribute to overall well-being and support the body’s ability to fend off infections.

Preventing cervical cancer requires a multifaceted approach that includes vaccination, regular screenings, and the adoption of healthy lifestyle choices. By making informed decisions about one’s health, women can significantly reduce their risk of developing cervical cancer and lead healthier, more fulfilling lives. Empowering individuals with knowledge about these preventive measures is essential in the ongoing effort to combat cervical cancer and improve women’s overall well-being.

WHO weighs AI risks, benefits for healthcare

In generative AI, algorithms trained on data sets can be used to produce new content….reports Asian Lite News

Generative artificial intelligence could transform healthcare through things like drug development and quicker diagnoses, but the World Health Organization warned Thursday of the potential pitfalls in rushing to embrace AI.

The WHO has been examining the likely dangers and benefits posed by AI large multi-modal models (LMMs), which are relatively new and are quickly being adopted in health.

In generative AI, algorithms trained on data sets can be used to produce new content.

LMMs are a type of generative AI which can use multiple types of data input, including text, images and video, and generate outputs that are not limited to the type of data fed into the algorithm.

“Some say this mimics human thinking and behaviour, and the way it engages in interactive problem-solving,” WHO digital health and innovation director Alain Labrique told a press conference.

The WHO said LMMs were predicted to have wide use and application in health care, scientific research, public health and drug development.

The UN health agency outlined five broad areas where the technology could be applied.

These are: diagnosis, such as responding to patients’ written queries; scientific research and drug development; medical and nursing education; clerical tasks; and patient-guided use, such as investigating symptoms.

While this holds potential, WHO warned there were documented risks that LMMs could produce false, inaccurate, biased or incomplete outcomes.

They might also be trained on poor quality data, or data containing biases relating to race, ethnicity, ancestry, sex, gender identity or age.

“As LMMs gain broader use in health care and medicine, errors, misuse and ultimately harm to individuals are inevitable,” the WHO cautioned.

They could lead to “automation bias”, where users blindly rely on the algorithm — even if they have good grounds to disagree.

On Thursday the WHO issued recommendations on the ethics and governance of LMMs, to help governments, tech firms and healthcare providers take advantage of the technology safely.

The WHO said it did not want to wait for roll-out in healthcare settings to discover the flaws and then try to fix them afterwards.

“Generative AI technologies have the potential to improve health care but only if those who develop, regulate and use these technologies identify and fully account for the associated risks,” said WHO chief scientist Jeremy Farrar.

“We need transparent information and policies to manage the design, development and use of LMMs.”

The WHO said liability rules were needed to “ensure that users harmed by an LMM are adequately compensated or have other forms of redress”.
