A pioneering member of the Indian fashion industry, Ranna Gill is seen as a futurist, someone who believes in the power of fashion and in pushing the entrepreneurial boundaries, on a global level. Returning to the runway in Mumbai after a decade, Gill is looking forward to an evening of celebrating the modern Indian woman through her collection Casa dei Fiori.

Casa dei Fiori will be presented at FDCI x Lakme Fashion Week on March 12, 2023 at 5 p.m. at Jio World Garden, Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai.

Inspired by her travels through Italy and her love for flowers, the fashion designer brings Casa dei Fiori, where effervescent hues and textures are transformed into classic and modern silhouettes. Known and loved signature prints, Casa dei Fiori blooms with vibrant and dazzling florals to create a feminine and playful sensibility.

“Flowers never fail to bring a smile to my face. They are full of life, love and femininity. Each flower is unique in its colour, shape and characteristics; much like every woman. Casa dei Fiori celebrates the gentle power of flowers through vibrant prints, embroideries and elegant silhouettes. The name comes from my travels through Italy, where I cherished my time amidst sprawling estates with cobblestone roads, manicured lawns and dazzling gardens,” says, Ranna Gill.

From dark botanicals that reflect the serene splendour of a lush garden, lit under moonlight; to cheerful coral bouquets that capture the joy and glory of crisp summer day, this season.

A love letter to craft, an embrace of a bygone period

Anita Dongre’s recently released vegan accessories and jewellery are displayed on the ground level next to specially created wallpaper inspired by her embroidery designs…reports Asian Lite News

A cheerful yellow structure with gleaming teak balconies that reflect the sun’s light through a variety of stained-glass designs is located across the street from the Jehangir Art Gallery and the iconic David Sassoon library. The historic Sassoon Building now houses Anita Dongre’s newest flagship store — a love letter to craft, an embrace of a bygone period, and a celebration of old meeting new-after being transformed by the designer’s vision and a year of architectural attention.

Says Dongre, “Bombay is my home, and the Sassoon building has witnessed every change of this city. In restoring this building we wanted to keep as much of its original form as we could- stained glass windows, timber beams and staircase, the tiles… I wanted to bring back the luxury of the 19th century and have it meet the effortless grace of the 21st century. It’s been a particular joy to realise a vision that mixes Indian crafts with colonial architecture against art that celebrates nature’s bounty. I’m excited to watch people experience this space through all their senses — sight, smell, touch, and heart.”

A fashionable oasis of tranquility in Kalaghoda

Expect a sense of calm to overtake you as you open the ground level doors. Set foot on the distinctive black and white marble flooring designed by Anita Dongre, inhale the rose aroma, and gaze at the lush green and gold handpainted pichhwai walls that support 200-year-old exposed teak beams as you escape the busy Dalal Street. An “otla” — style open verandah with original cast iron railings and stained glass made in the same patterns the Sassoon building displayed in the 1800s peeks down at you from the level above. Rajasthani jharokhas surround this verandah.

Anita Dongre’s recently released vegan accessories and jewellery are displayed on the ground level next to specially created wallpaper inspired by her embroidery designs.

The Sassoon building originally had a plain ground floor and three upper levels that were reached by a beautiful timber stairway. After passing rich gold pichhwai nature scenes painted against an emerald green base, you will ascend to the first level on this lovely teak staircase that has recently been restored. Grassroot and the ready-to-wear line are located on this level, which also contains 200-year-old metal and timber frames and craft stories.

Menswear is displayed on the second level against hand-painted pichhwai walls in grey and gold. Behind a wall of lush verdant plants, light streams through the balcony doors. The balconies were only added, as can be seen in old photos of this structure, after the fort walls were taken down around 1865. The lavish wooden balcony structure is supported by cast iron columns with Corinthian caps, which are lined with glazed tiles. The wooden balconies were revived, stained glass was carefully recreated from old photographs, and original tiles were saved while new ones were made to match the pattern during the restoration of this level. Enjoy a priceless amenity here: a calm gallery to observe the passing of time. Take in the Rajabai clocktower and the many architectural wonders of Kalaghoda.

The feeling of luxury that this building’s high ceilings, wooden floors, and pools of light evoke is amplified by triptych mirrors. The third level, also known as the bridal floor, offers the ultimate indulgence. As you ascend the grand stairway, you can see the domed timber roof, which is now just out of your grasp. Richly embroidered lehengas in pools of theatrical light and a tikri wall that transports you into ballrooms and castles greet you when the doors open.

What women want. (Photo: anitadongre/Instagram)

Dongre’s newest flagship store in the heart of Mumbai’s art district – Kalaghoda is proof of how the forgotten can find a place in our modern world- whether craft, architecture, or a way of life. From hand-embroidered cushions and elephants embroidered on sheer curtains, to restored metal and woodwork, and tiles and stained glass that recreate the grandeur of “Bombay” before the fort walls went down, every inch of the 8500 square feet of Sassoon Building is given a new lease on life while celebrating the inherent and original elements of luxury. As you walk out of this experience, you’ll carry with you a feeling of tranquility and freedom.

‘Our brand is inclusive in every sense of the word’

Ed-a-Mamma prioritizes state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques that ensure comfort and care…says Alia Bhatt

Alia Bhatt’s brand Ed-a-Mamma brings it one step closer to creating an ‘Ed-a-Mamma’ world by introducing its latest infant clothing. Encouraging children and their mothers to prioritise the environment, Bhatt who is the investor and founder, feels the environment has always been a top priority for her and that one owes a healthy planet to our children. The actress speaks about how the brand is getting closer to its objective of changing the world one garment at a time.

What motivated you to launch an infants’ wear collection? Why wasn’t it launched earlier, when the brand was first established?

The brand was launched with a vision to create an all-encompassing Ed-a-Mamma universe with earth-friendly products for all age groups. Our first offering is Ed-a-Mamma clothing, which we launched in the middle of the pandemic. Our strategy was to launch in April 2020, but then the lockdown was announced and the earliest we could launch was in October. Despite having the wrong merchandise launch in the wrong season, the product was really appreciated by parents. And it was this encouraging response – towards our product and its positioning – that helped us know we were on the right track.

Maternity was born out of a personal need – I struggled to find good maternity wear in India and realised a gap in my wardrobe reflected a gap in the market. After the immense love garnered by Ed-a-Mamma for its first-ever maternity and nursing collection, infant wear felt like the natural next step. Again, the decision to launch this collection was a deeply personal one.

Alia Bhatt talks about the world of Ed-a-Mamma.(photo:IANSLIFE)

As young mothers, we want to give our children the best of everything. And so, on my quest to find the best possible clothes for my baby, we embarked on the journey to create this infant wear line, which I am so happy to share with you. The idea is to build and reinforce the same narrative across the child’s journey – and there’s no better time to start than when they’re young and plant the seeds for a better planet.

What distinguishes the company’s newborn line from other brands?

Our brand is inclusive in every sense of the word. We walk the talk by using fabrics that are natural and fully biodegradable. All garments are pre-washed and tested to ensure they are pH safe for babies. Ed-a-Mamma prioritizes state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques that ensure comfort and care. The brand only uses AZO-free dyes that are safe for kids in addition to buttons and trims that are plastic and nickel free.

What about the fabrics used to make the outfit? What were the difficulties you encountered?

The Girls and Boys infant-wear ranges are 100 per cent cotton and the Unisex range is a premium line where 100 per cent GOTS-certified organic cotton is used and the graphic treatment & garment details are minimal. Sourcing the right fabrics has never been a challenge but maintaining premium quality at these affordable price points is tough.

Tell us a little more about the three themes: Jungle Joy, Cute-a-saunas, and Woodland Wonders.

Our first infant wear collection is inspired by nature. Jungle joy is an outdoor adventure, exploring all things nature. Cute-a-Sauras is all about dinosaurs, with playful, happy prints. Woodland Wonders is a personal favourite and features adorable animal graphics.

What are your thoughts on the offline space? Do you want to expand across India?

While the brand is currently available across 22 Lifestyle outlets, pan India and we’ve launched at Azorte as well. But, hopefully, we’ll be able to launch our exclusive stores later this year – a place where the kids and their parents can truly experience the world of Ed-a-Mamma. Yes, and after doing well in India, the brand is set to expand the business beyond India starting from the Middle East, where we will be available in the next 6 months.

Ed-a-mamma forays into Nature Inspired Infants’ Wear

Anything that you’ve learned or been inspired by while creating the line?

I get involved in design and communication – to ensure we’re truly maintaining the brand narrative across categories. Both maternity wear and baby wear are deeply personal for me.

The former was born out of a gap in my personal wardrobe. We then realised there was a need for comfortable yet functional nursing wear – this was something that our consumers highlighted. This is why a couple of months later, we launched a line of nursing wear.

As a young mother, I always want what’s best and safe for my baby, which is how our infant wear line came about. And just like our other products, this line is good for your baby and our planet. The environment has always been a big area of concern for me and as a mum, I am even more mindful that we owe our children a healthy planet.

My handloom, my pride

Each one stood out for its unique way of highlighting the richly textured, from all over India, anciently wise fabrics…reports Asian Lite News

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Textiles and DC, the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) organised a performance at the 36th International Surajkund Crafts Mela 2023 that celebrated India’s many handloom traditions (Handloom).

The gathering, “My Handloom, My Pride,” took place on February 16, 2023, and featured eight ensembles each from six designers. They included Samant Chauhan, Khanijo, Madhu Jain, Payal Jain, Kora by Anjali Kalia, Divyam Mehta, and Kora. Each one stood out for its unique way of highlighting the richly textured, from all over India, anciently wise fabrics.

Designer Samant Chauhan elevated the Bhagalpuri weave in Tussar silk, while Gaurav Khanijo, used Khadi woven in Bengal, with Kantha embroidery detailing on his modern cuts. Divyam Mehta worked with yarn crafted from agri waste, woven in Bengal. Interestingly, Madhu Jain paid homage to weaves from Orissa, channelling simplicity.

Payal Jain gave the ancient Pekhwa’ weaving technique which has been passed down generations of master weavers, a memorable representation with endearing shapes. On another note, Anjali Kalia’s hand block prints in red, black and olive, highlighted with gota, offset with thread, dori and sequins embroidery, made a play for a melange of hues.

M.D Sinha, IFS, Principal Secretary, Department of Tourism and Heritage, government of Haryana and Vice Chairman, Surajkund Mela Authority said, “India’s handloom sector is a symbol of our country’s rich and varied cultural heritage. At Surajkund International Crafts Mela we proudly present handlooms in the most creative and innovative manner, through our collaboration with FDCI. It’s our endeavour to make traditional handlooms into heirlooms.”

“The Ministry of Textiles has always supported such initiatives where handloom is the showstopper. The show celebrates the vivacity of weaves we have in India. Textiles weaving provides employment to more than 31 lakh households all over the country, and sustenance to more than 35 lakh weavers, mostly women. The show is a tribute to their resilience, skills and artisanal prowess. We are delighted to be showcasing at a venue like Surajkund, which is engulfed in traditional crafts, along with the Ministry of Textiles and DC (Handloom),” said Curator of the event, Sunil Sethi, FDCI.

Shopping trends for new year

After a brief absence, high heels are once again in style, which requires us to re-learn how to walk in them. There is no question that the style of business changes…writes Lothungbeni Humtsoe

There are different styles of military-enlivened apparel other than cover and armed force boots, but there are a few genuinely phenomenal instances of both. Wonderful fitting, organised coats, practical things, and a lot of military-propelled emphases like epaulets, metals, and gold buttons are what you can anticipate. Add similarly striking accessories, flawless makeup, and haircuts to complete the outfits.

Dress Up-Cowboy

The notion of the Wild West is heavily referenced in the patchwork boots, plaid shirts, miniskirts, boot-cut jeans, leather pants, and numerous fringes and zippers. But lately, cowboy fashion has been dominating runways and music festivals alike. Google searches for the same pattern appear to have increased as well.

Party disco diva!

We as a whole settle on one thing we maintain that should accomplish by the end of the late spring. Get up and move. It’s no big surprise that our garments mirror the expansion in dance music discharges all through the warm-climate months, from Drake’s Genuinely, Don’t bother to Beyonce’s Renaissance, as we draw motivation from the ’70s and disco to prepare for a night at the clubs.

The art fashion- Maximalism

After adopting a minimalist aesthetic for years, 2020 has witnessed a sudden increase in extravagant, garish, and outlandish designs that some refer to as maximalism. Maximalism in the arts is a direct response to the minimalist oppositional movement. It’s been called an “aesthetic of excess” in the past. As consumers gravitate toward joyful, fun, and upbeat prints, the upcoming quirky designs start to seep into large consumer markets.

Love wearing heels?.(photo:IANSLIFE)

Heel your revenge!

After a brief absence, high heels are once again in style, which requires us to re-learn how to walk in them. There is no question that the style of business changes. After almost two years in which comfort ruled, with furniture that was great for relaxing around the house, charm is bringing the total inverse of this pattern and getting back in the game. High heels are back, as confirmed by the various clear, tempting, and energetic outfits that embody this style.
